Bottles of champagne salvaged from a 170-year-old shipwreck have been tested in the lab by scientists seeking clues about historic winemaking methods. Among the results were very high levels of sugar - higher than most modern dessert wine - and traces of arsenic. 168 bottles were found 50m beneath the Baltic Sea in July 2010, several of them unusually well-preserved due to the stable, cold and dark conditions.
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-32388123 [t]http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/304/media/images/82446000/png/_82446467_picture1.png[/t]
but does it taste good??
These wines date back to the pre-Phylloxera days of winemaking in Europe, it would be fascinating to see how the wines back then were.
I'm very surprised the sugars / any leftover yeast didn't cause refermentation. Edit : I guess the temperature probably acted as a "cold crash" and killed any chance of yeast surviving / being active.
but does it taste good??
well whoever ventures to taste them will most likely get arsenic poisoning
well whoever ventures to taste them will most likely get arsenic poisoning
At least we'll be able to recreate it to get a good taste of it
well whoever ventures to taste them will most likely get arsenic poisoning
"traces" doesn't sound like enough to kill someone. Maybe if they drank a few bottles
And by the time you have drank a few bottles of champagne you would probably be dead anyway haha
I consumed 4 bottles of red wine together with lots of beer and whiskey during the course of about 5 hours at a party once, then I got lost in my friend's back yard
