• Peter Thiel considering bid for California governor
Peter Thiel, the Silicon Valley billionaire and outspoken Donald Trump supporter, is considering a 2018 bid for California governor, according to three Republicans familiar with his thinking. Thiel, who co-founded PayPal and was an early investor in Facebook, has been discussing a prospective bid with a small circle of advisers, including Rob Morrow, who has emerged as his political consigliere. Morrow has worked at Clarium Capital, the San Francisco-based investment management firm and hedge fund that Thiel started. Those who have been in touch with the 49-year-old entrepreneur are skeptical that he’ll enter the race. He is a deeply private figure, and California is unfriendly territory for a Republican – particularly a pro-Trump one. The president-elect won just over 30 percent of the vote there. But they add that Thiel has conspicuously yet to rule out a bid and that those around him continue to discuss it. Adding fuel to the speculation: Thiel raised eyebrows this week when he granted a rare interview to the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd. In the interview, he outlined his political worldview and explained his support for Trump.(At one point, Thiel said, perhaps jokingly, that he’d be “fine” with California seceding. “I think it would be good for California, good for the rest of the country. It would help Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign,” he added.) Neither Thiel nor a representative responded requests for comment. Thiel, who delivered a primetime speech at last summer’s Republican National Convention, isn’t entirely new to the political scene. According to public filings, he has contributed over $8.5 million to federal candidates and committees since 2000. He speaks frequently with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the most powerful Republican in California. Other Trump backers are exploring bids for political office, too. Alan Cobb, who was a Trump campaign aide, is seen as a top contender for the Kansas congressional seat that GOP Rep. Mike Pompeo would vacate should he be confirmed as CIA director. Whether Thiel pulls the trigger or not, Republicans in the Trump era are expecting a sizable number of business-minded political outsiders to wage 2018 bids for office. They include Randy Boyd, a wealthy Tennessee executive and minor league baseball team owner who is expected to run for governor in the state. “Republicans have had great success at both the state and federal level in recent years electing candidates who had backgrounds in business, but who were political outsiders,” said Phil Cox, a former Republican Governors Association executive director. “With Trump's victory, we're going to see even more non-traditional candidates, with backgrounds in business, not politics, enter the political arena.”
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/peter-thiel-california-governor-bid-233632
I'm not sure red districts would out number the blue districts
The guy who thinks democracy isn't compatible with modern civilization? The guy whose not a fan of women's suffrage? Yeah fuck that We don't need more billionaires with twisted ideals shaping things for decades to come
Pretty much 100% sure he'd fail against brown. He's got a high approval, 56% and is willing to fight trump in a state that's almost 50% Hispanic.
I'm not sure red districts would out number the blue districts
They had enough red to vote in Schwarzenegger.
They had enough red to vote in Schwarzenegger.
Pretty much nobody is making that mistake again.
Like...legit...seriously? How can a person even think of this in 2017? In a western country no less. What the absolute fuck.
Turns out he is not for that.
I had hoped my essay on the limits of politics would provoke reactions, and I was not disappointed. But the most intense response has been aimed not at cyberspace, seasteading, or libertarian politics, but at a commonplace statistical observation about voting patterns that is often called the gender gap. It would be absurd to suggest that women’s votes will be taken away or that this would solve the political problems that vex us. While I don’t think any class of people should be disenfranchised, I have little hope that voting will make things better. Voting is not under siege in America, but many other rights are. In America, people are imprisoned for using even very mild drugs, tortured by our own government, and forced to bail out reckless financial companies. I believe that politics is way too intense. That’s why I’m a libertarian. Politics gets people angry, destroys relationships, and polarizes peoples’ vision: the world is us versus them; good people versus the other. Politics is about interfering with other people’s lives without their consent. That’s probably why, in the past, libertarians have made little progress in the political sphere. Thus, I advocate focusing energy elsewhere, onto peaceful projects that some consider utopian.
https://www.cato-unbound.org/2009/05/01/peter-thiel/suffrage-isnt-danger-other-rights-are I think this does a pretty good explanation of what his original point was.
They had enough red to vote in Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger had the advantage of being one of the most famous and well liked actors on the planet at the time. If you're a politically apathetic, or even disinterested Democrat, it wouldn't be too hard to say "fuck it" and cast a vote for the Governator. Peter Thiel, on the other hand, is simply a successful Silicon Valley billionaire. No one not following the tech scene, or U.S. politics closely, would have any idea who he is. And, for comparison, the Republican candidate last time around, Meg Whitman, was another successful, Silicon Valley billionaire, who spent nearly 150-million of her own fortune on the race, setting the record for the largest amount of personal money spent on a race in U.S. history: She still lost by double digits. Let's also not forget that, going forward, the Republican party will be the majority party in the U.S. government, which historically dampens their voters turnout in election afterwards, as their voters, content with the power their party holds, is less motivated to get to the polls. The opposition, now undoubtedly the Democrats, will feel outraged over the opposition's control, and motivated to oust them at every level of government. None of this bodes well for Peter Thiel running for the governorship.
They had enough red to vote in Schwarzenegger.
There was also a lot more going on in 2003, that wasn't a normal election. A lot of Democrats opposed the recall and just didn't vote. It was actually pretty complicated.
I'll be happy to help keep him out of office. California didn't vote for Trump, and you won't be successful here. We're too liberal, there's too many cities, and too many people who actually live with and are friends with immigrants, legal and illegal, and realize that they're human beings.
I'm relieved I live in California, which will be a buffer against some of the shitty policies that will be coming out of the next administration. We don't need a Trump surrogate here.
How about forcing inmates to pay for their own incarceration when they get out?
california is far from the only ones who do this
We don't need some pussyfoot billionaire. What we need is Carl Weathers
elon musk 2020
I can't wait for him to attempt to launch California into space.
Good businessman is not good politician And viceversa. How hard is that to understand? Geez some people cant really get it... I hope the guy spends a lot of money and fails. At least he will have given part of his fortune to someone
