• Comcast Executive Insists Americans Don’t Really Need Google Fiber-Like Speeds
It seems that cable companies really don’t think that American consumers need 1Gbps Internet services such as those offered by Google Fiber. We've already seen both former Time Warner Cable CFO Irene Esteves and National Cable & Telecommunications Association CEO Michael Powell dismiss delivering gigabit connectivity as “an irrelevant exercise in bragging rights,” among other things. And now we have Comcast ]executive vice president David L. Cohen, who has penned an editorial for The Philadelphia Inquirer insisting once again that offering gigabit speeds would be pointless because “most websites can’t deliver content as fast as current networks move, and most U.S. homes have routers that can’t support the speed already available to the home
http://bgr.com/2013/06/05/comcast-executive-google-fiber-criticism/
Everything is fine. Go about your business, customer.

This is what we said when we had dial-up. "Who needs that much speed? All we need to do is have simple text exchanges. What could we possible do with more than that?" Then a few decades later we have instant streaming movies and games at a moment's notice. What will come from Gbps lines? I have no idea, I can't predict the future. But whatever it is, it will be fucking awesome.
speeds are fucking abysmal in some parts of the country. yes we do need it
I am on Comcast in my apartment at the moment and they are shit. I am glad to be switching off in a couple months.
I guess I really dont need Comcast then
Put your dick in a ceiling fan comcast
Comcast's internet for me alternates between being fine and then suddenly being really shitty and slow for a few days. I also have a 250GB cap, which you reach really quickly when streaming or downloading linux distros.
Just because most routers or websites cant deliver at 1Gbs, is no excuse to not provide 1Gbs speeds. Start building that infrastructure now so that when routers and websites get to that point you already have the ability to get 1Gbs speeds. Having lines that can carry that much bandwith would allow everyone now to get the most of their internet connection and not have to worry about the bogging down that can occur at peak internet usage in your area.
The average person doesn't need a gigabit connection but the average household has multiple people with multiple devices. Phones, tablets, game consoles, computers, smart TVs, they could all be on and using the internet at the same time. That's where the need for fast connections come from.
Those companies are right, we don't need those speeds, but we will. We haven't created services and products that can utilize that speed, but as it rolls out, people will start creating things that use a good portion of all that bandwidth and eventually it won't be enough anymore.
With SSDs becoming more and more common, the write speeds are there. I'd say I agree that nobody needs that fast of internet when your HDD can't even write as fast you could download. But a lot of people can, and that number's on the rise. You know what else is on the horizon? Movies being shot in 4k Resolution for 4k TVs and Monitors. It's a few years off but it's coming. Digital Distribution is everywhere, from music, TV shows, movies, games, and they're increasing in file size, not shrinking. So fuck off, CockMast Exec. Google is proving that you can do fast good internet for cheap without putting data caps on bandwidth as if it were a finite resource I loved Comcast when I had them. In Nashville. 10 years ago. Now they're terrible. Still not as bad as my current ISP, however

I mean really, I cant work with 7mbs very well. If a carrier had 25mbs, I'd be fine with that and nothing more

Maybe not for now, but we definitely need better prices.
Am I the only living being who has Comcast and has no issues at all with it?
For good measure, Cohen says that Comcast and its fellow Internet providers are the modern-day equivalents of Benjamin Franklin, a pioneering inventor who was similarly attacked by detractors during his life.
HAHAHAHA So, let me get this straight. He's trying to say "We're like Ben Franklin, we're innovators and people criticized us too!" Even though he's the one trying to halt progress and stifle innovation because "well you don't need it". Yeah, right.

I rent with four other people, which right off the bat should tell you that there's five computers. And then we have our phones, tablets, and game consoles. The strain on the connection is really apparent sometimes. (no thanks to a certain housemate who never limits the DL speed on his torrents or Steam...)
My ISP maxes at 100 Mb/s right now, but they are supposed to be upgrading to 200 Mb/s in the next year, and 500 Mb/s within the year after that. Also, no Data Caps.
Fuck you Comcast, the 7 computers and 7 phones/tablets in my household says otherwise. And fuck your 250GB cap.
I would love it if the government wasn't in disarray, maybe we could get our government to make contract for ISP's to do certain internet related things, global wi-fi, fiber speeds all over, etc, would be a great incentive.
Am I the only living being who has Comcast and has no issues at all with it?
Seems like it. It works well for me most of the time, but at completely random times it'll just suddenly go out for a couple hours, leaving me and my four housemates in the e-dark. And of course, in our area, there are no other comparable options. That's probably the biggest problem with Comcast; a lot of people have to put up with their shit.
Executives having no idea what they're talking about? Next thing you'll be telling me is that the sky is blue.
We don't need gigabit internet just like no computer will ever need more than 640k memory.
Comcast so bad it makes Telus look good!
You guys with your 1Gbps speeds, and here I am in England stuck with these speeds Why can't Google come to the UK and do something about our internet speeds?

I'm stuck with 3 Mb/s.
