What a pretentious video. My eyes cant roll back further.
It's an opinion piece.
"cultural appropriation"
Yep, argument instantly null and void.
What a ridiculous fucking sentiment. You cannot use gifs of black people, because it constitutes as "digital blackface"? I've never even seen a white person use black emoji, but even if they did, is it really a problem? Where's the outrage at people using yellow emojis? There's plenty of black people that use white people gifs, and no one cares. Never even heard of a single black friend complain about white people using "black gifs".
Am I performing digital blackface by having Kanye as my avi? So dumb. Why would you even think this is a good idea to put in your channel, BBC?
👌🏿

please send me to cultural insensitivity training for this
running out of legitimate things to get upset about fast, i see
edit: the worst part of videos and articles like this is how they distract from the actual problems
way to sabotage your own goals
Ironic as fuck coming from the same people that launched this completely patronizing nonsense masquerading as cultural outreach lmao

:hammered:
I think we can all agree that the racial emoji variants were a mistake
They're non-standardized and cause nothing but trouble both socially and technically
generic, universal yellow emojis are the only true emojis
digital blackface?
pardon
so i cant use anything that has a black person in it because it's racist?

It is a legitimate dialect of English[1] (even if it does look fucking nuts), and the BBC tend to translate their shit as part of their World Service[2].
Not sure where the "patronising" part comes from tbh.

i dunno about them causing social trouble among mentally stable individuals, but they always felt really unnecessary to me
emoticons are just a generic representation of a human expression, why get specific like that?

I totally agree. I think the trouble is that they create a choice that you have to make - which color do I use? If I'm just making a kissy face emoji, I don't want to have to think about these things. Do I use the one that matches my skin the most closely? What if I'm in a situation where I'm using an emoji in reference to black people? Do I use a dark-skinned emoji in that situation?
It's all just completely unnecessary. I'm all about eliminating choice when it doesn't add anything to a situation. In this case, the freedom of choice is nothing but a negative.
What do i think? I think these people are fucking idiots and by stating what they did all they do is lessen what the true meaning of black face.
Listen lady I'm sorry black people are so amazing at conveying emotion but they just are. Here let me demonstrate.

I mean you can just ignore it. Skin tones only show up when you hover your finger over the thing I think (I have google's puddy people on my phone.)
It being non-standardized irks me, but otherwise I don't really care.

the image that told me they didn't research anything, and are just buzzfeed tier garbage
Rarely am I left speechless by sound bites and videos but this is so exceptionally stupid that a suitable response hasn't yet been established.
People go wrong when they actively seek out things to "fix" instead of simply being aware of what's actually harmful.
You gotta stop trying to make everything perfect and accept that some things are going to be absorbed.

Weren't braids pretty common in post-Alexander India, Achaemenid Persia, and bronze age - classical age Greece/Rome?
h3 made a video on this

"Ask yourself why you use that emoji or gif"
Why? You'll ignore the reason and tell me I'm wrong anyways and what I actually think is "X".

Seriously though what
Hey look, more irrelevant things to get offended about.
Except that absolutely none of these reaction gifs (atleast from my knowledge) reinforce any form of pre-existing black stereotype like minstrel shows did. Neither do black emojis.
You're turning the whole reference to blackface into a kind of Godwin's Law. You cant just bring that shit up without making some kind of effort to connect the ideas in a non-tenuous way.
oh fuck is my avatar digital blackface
It's not blackface but sometimes it's obvious a Black reaction face was chosen because they make expressions other races don't do. There's a reason the seedy underbelly of the internet loves them.
