According to metal detecting manufacturer Minelab, the discovery was made in a worked-over area on the southern edge of central Victoria's Golden Triangle. It said the 145-ounce nugget, named Friday's Joy, could be worth up to $250,000. The lucky prospector, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said he found the nugget 12 inches below the ground. "I thought it was rubbish at first, maybe an old horseshoe," he said. "As I began to scrape away the clay and dig deeper, I really couldn't believe my eyes - this wasn't an old piece of steel in front of me. The odds of getting a find like this in your lifetime are incredibly slim. You'd be better off buying lottery tickets.
Where does one go to cash in on something like this without being robbed?
The only thing I'll ever find with a metal detector in here is unexploded land mines. :saddowns:
This is the type of shit I wanted to find in sovereign hill. I was an optimistic child. [editline]25th August 2016[/editline]
, who has chosen to remain anonymous
Very smart.
They add gold flakes to the creek at Sovereign Hill.
Flakes ain't 4 kg
The only thing I'll ever find with a metal detector in here is unexploded land mines. :saddowns:
We still find unexploded allied bombs from time to time.
I'm sure you can find cool stuff in certain places, but would you want to be 'That autistic guy on the beach with his metal detector'. If so then have fun
when did autism have anything to do with utilizing metal detectors to find cool stuff
Flakes ain't 4 kg
Yes, and?
I'm sure you can find cool stuff in certain places, but would you want to be 'That autistic guy on the beach with his metal detector'. If so then have fun
For a quarter mil I would gladly be any kind of guy.
Keep your pants on boy it was just a way of saying it, I could have said retarded but autism fit the description better. But don't worry about it, if you have ever seen these people at the beach you'd know what I meant
yeah fuck people for pursuing their hobbies right haha
Lets pretend social stigmas don't exist so we can live in one big hug-box denying reality. Sure is healthy.
if you think treasure hunting with metal detectors is behaviour worthy of stigmatisation, then you're the one with a problem here
I'm not saying you should not pursue your hobby, I never said that. I'm merely stating what is in my experience the common consensus on metal detectors at the beach. These people 9/10 times wear socks in their sandals and just look plain hilarious. If you disagree or have other experiences that's great but I am just gonna post what I've seen and heard. Also if there's a potential thousand dollar reward in it you shouldn't be too upset about my posts or people looking at you and can just ignore them freely. No need to feel so attacked. [editline]25th August 2016[/editline] Why are you so defensive on this? I didn't hurt your feelings did I? (reply in pm so we can avoid going off topic more)
I was replying to Marbalo and his stupid "hurr hug box safe space get out more you sheltered kids" mentality. I replied to your post in that way because you were being unnecessarily harsh on people who are frankly just having a good time pursuing their hobbies by calling them "autistic" or "retarded".
when did autism have anything to do with utilizing metal detectors to find cool stuff
Autism is the go-to replacement these days for "stupid" or "retarded" but with the association with being obsessive over some subject or issue, usually used in the latter usage. Also commonly used to insult people for having hobbies that you don't care about. Twenty years ago we'd just call you a nerd, these days we'll declare that you have mental issues. That's what they get for enjoying themselves. Normally I wouldn't get worked up over it because insulting people with words describing mental deficiencies or issues is as old as time itself, seeing as nobody has any problem with "retarded" and that's where stuff like "dumb" and probably stupid come from, but people seem to be particularly insulting with this one. Like there's something inherently wrong with you for caring about it or focusing too much on something. "lol dude calm ur autism lol lol" is really obnoxious to hear.
if you think treasure hunting with metal detectors is behaviour worthy of stigmatisation, then you're the one with a problem here
idc about the whole autism angle but it's worth noting that "guy with a metal detector on a beach" is basically a huge film/tv trope where the individual is often portrayed as weird, annoying, or a middle aged dad. There's even a They Might be Giants song on the subject lol
It's amazing how you can find a small fortune right below you just like that. To be fair though, dude's been searching for 10 years. :v:
I'm not on the International Stigma Committee, sorry, I don't get to decide what should be stigmatized or not, I'm just telling you that it's a common stigma and ignoring the fact isn't healthy for you. You are, however, using his post as an excuse to shoehorn just how unforgivably tolerating and open you are about hobbies, and it really bothers me when people do that because you're probably not even aware just how obliquely self-righteous you sound.
it's a stigma because people like you make it a stigma lol, I couldn't care less about some dude walking around a beach waving a metal detector around
it's a stigma because people like you make it a stigma lol, I couldn't care less about some dude walking around a beach waving a metal detector around
This. Until I read this thread I was fully unaware that some people have a thing against people who use... metal detectors? :why:
Keep your pants on boy it was just a way of saying it, I could have said retarded but autism fit the description better. I talk to the people that metal-detect around here all the time. 99% of them are older and seem perfectly normal. Maybe it wouldn't be a stigma if douchebags weren't so quick to judge and make it one. (User was banned for this post ("Flaming" - Bradyns))
Finding treasure sucks. Because some country lays claim to it every damn time and you don't get what it's worth
I'm not on the International Stigma Committee, sorry, I don't get to decide what should be stigmatized or not, I'm just telling you that it's a common stigma and ignoring the fact isn't healthy for you.
Verbage argument
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
it's the kind of response I'd expect from someone with no chances of finding a 4kg gold nugget in the ground [editline]25th August 2016[/editline] merge pls
We still find unexploded allied bombs from time to time.
I think "a few daily on average" is a better way to put it. The mines are most likely worse though, since those sound far easier to set off.
when did autism have anything to do with utilizing metal detectors to find cool stuff
If you have any interest that he doesn't like you have autism, this is the general rationale of people to say shit like that.
autism noun au·tism \ˈȯ-ˌti-zəm\ a variable developmental disorder that appears by age three and is characterized by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behavior patterns and using a metal detector on the beach.
Edit: Or maybe it wasn't you, there's too many people on this site who get buttflustered over people enjoying things they don't and they all have really similar names. I think it might have been Melnek who is also from Israel.
The odds of getting a find like this in your lifetime are incredibly slim. You'd be better off buying lottery tickets.
You can still find lots of other stuff. My grandfather goes metal detecting almost religiously, just about every other week if not every other day. He often finds a lot of coins and jewelry. At least once or twice a year he'll find a ring or two worth up to a grand or more. People bring the most expensive shit to beaches and parks and lose them without notice. [editline]25th August 2016[/editline] It's not enough to make a living off of but it's certainly a worth-while hobby if you have a lot of free time.
