I imagine this will be a very short thread but post films that are better than their wordy counterpart. Allow me to get started.

Some comic book movies. Why? Simply because after 250 issues writers start making up stuff to keep the plot "fresh", which in 90% of the cases don't turn out well (Tony Stark being BDSM raped by his armour to then get Stockholm syndrome and characters dying then being resurrected 6 times, for example).

actually. Comic movies only take certain plotlines e.g Dark Knight and Batman Begins came from Batman : Year 1. You can argue that some plots are better than movies and some movies are better than the worse of plots.

I have tremendous respect for Tolkein and the incredible world that he imagined and created but, as far as writing an interesting story went... I didn't like reading The Lord of the Rings at all. I understand that it's not supposed to be an action-packed book but that doesn't exactly excuse the horrendous pacing. I just find it dull. He spends more time describing the history of a building than he does detailing what happens at the siege of Helm's Deep.
But, again, I'll stress that the history and the detail in it is truly beautiful, it's just that, as a piece of pure entertainment, I prefer the films.
Where the Wild Things are is one of those extremely rare cases where the movie has more content than the book.
American Psycho. I couldn't stand the book, it's so hard to get momentum going when you spend a page and a half just getting through Bateman listing off what everyone's wearing.

I didn't like the film.
I want to say Watchmen but the film wasn't exactly perfect either, though I greatly prefer the film's ending over the book's.
Into the Wild, was pretty great. But the book was good too.
Passion of the christ.
No Country For Old Men. The book wasn't bad, but not really McCarthy at his finest. Now the movie, that's the Coen Brothers at full throttle.

This, a thousand times this. I really enjoyed it around the first few chapters, but it never really progressed. It was pages and pages of reviews, followed by a few where he courts a couple of girls or picks up a few prostitutes or talks to other people, followed by killing them. Rinse and repeat.
I'm glad that they left out the bit where he stabs a kid in the throat and pushes him into a bin, then pretends to be a doctor, slaps the crying mother and tells her to get a grip.
Battlefield Earth
I mean. Look at these guys.

Stand By Me
Do I really need to expand on that?
This isn't really odd cases, movies are better a lot of the time.
Apocalypse Now
Godfather
Jackie Brown
LOTR
Stalker
Every Stephen King based movie EVER

I thought the Stalker movie was only BASED off of a book. Not a book-into-movie deal.
I could be wrong.

I get the impression that the book is somewhat of an acquired taste.

You're right, the movie is somewhat loosely based on the book and they focused on entirely different narratives and ideas. If I had to choose between them I'd pick the movie but ultimately, you can't really compare the two.
forrest gump
Someone already said it but i'm going to say it again anyway

I have read every book in the trilogy and the Hobbit and I loved them, but the movies were just better. More epic.
In the books it takes about four chapters just for the characters to finish saying "bye".
I preferred the Hobbit to the other books. The films are pretty epic though.
The Lord of the Rings books are still good, right? I really enjoyed The Hobbit and I've been meaning to read the trilogy.
Angels and Demons
I really liked what they did with Shutter Island. It was a long time ago since I read the book but from what I can remember the movie seemed to follow the book rather close. I'm quite lazy therefore the movie is better.
I have to disagree with the claim that LOTR is a better movie than a book. It is if you go purely for entertainment it gives you perhaps. Not if you start adding in quality of the two pieces.
I personally prefer a clockwork orange as a movie though.

I compare the movie to the game and say the movie is a lot better in that case too.
Also Apocalypse Now is only based off Heart of Darkness but it's still a lot better.
I thought Jurassic Park was better as a movie, but it's been a long time since I've read it.
