Transport officials say they revised laws because of public demand. Heather Cho was convicted last February after ordering a taxiing plane back to the gate to offload a steward who served the nuts the wrong way. [...] Besides being the vice-president at Korean Air at that time, Ms Cho - also known as Cho Hyun-ah - is the daughter of the airline's chairman. During the incident she was angered that she was given macadamia nuts which she did not ask for, and was offended that they were served in a bag, not in a bowl. After confronting flight staff, she ordered the plane which was taxiing at New York's JFK Airport to turn back and offload the chief steward. Under the new law, passed by parliamentarians last year, anyone who disturbs the pilot during a flight could face up to five years in prison or a 50 million won ($41,200; £28,900) fine. [...] Ms Cho was convicted of violating airline safety. She served five months in jail before she was freed in May after an appeals court overturned the ruling saying she did not cause a change in flight path. Another conviction of using violence against flight attendants still stands.
source
I'm not sure throwing her in jail was right but certainly firing her ass, also every seinfeld joke about the deal with airplane penuts
well if she is the head of Korean Air she should've known better
Man I never realised she actually faced prison time for that incident. That's pretty wild. She definitely acted like a spoilt brat.
wow 5 months in the slammer? That would be pretty disgraceful for the company.
I'm not sure throwing her in jail was right but certainly firing her ass, also every seinfeld joke about the deal with airplane penuts
Considering she was the VP of an airline company a fine wouldn't be very damaging to her. 5 months is a quite extreme though...
wow 5 months in the slammer? That would be pretty disgraceful for the company.
yeah considering her father is the chairman. shows they took it pretty seriously
I wonder if this has anything to do with the Sewol Incident. Korea has been passing a lot of really strict travel laws and laws pertaining to government vacation time to try to help the local tourist economy, which was destroyed after the Sewol incident. By making even harsher laws regarding air travel, the government could be trying to discourage people from flying oversees for vacation.
well if she is the head of Korean Air she should've known better
That's not how it works in Korea. Families build dynasties through their companies and hire their children into management positions without any real experience. It's a matter of prestige and family honor for everyone to be successful, so despite these chaebol kids getting degrees in foreign countries and all the money they could desire, they are ridiculously spoiled. Kind of like Affluenza crap except it's legitimate, hand in hand with nepotism.
I think the 5 months in jail was justified. She stormed into the cockpit of a moving (albeit taxi-ing) plane. That's fucking dangerous. What if she caused someone to die because the pilot was distracted by her idiotic tantrum?
Don't these planes run mostly on auto-pilot anyways?
The plane was on the ground, taxiing to the runway for take-off. It's one of the most critical parts of any flight. Auto-pilot or not, a passenger storming into the cockpit while throwing a tantrum is extremely dangerous, both to the passengers and anyone on the ground.

I thought they were in mid-flight.
5 months doesn't seem that ridiculous if you take into account the potential damages a distracted pilot who has to taxi (watching for other planes rolling around) and time wasted for each individual passenger compounds up.
