[QUOTE]SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -Simpson County and state authorities are investigating the death of House Representative Jessica Upshaw.
According to the Mississippi Legislature's web site, Upshaw, 53 was a Republican.
She served District 95, in the Mississippi House of Representatives, which covered Hancock and Harrison Counties.
"It appeared she had a gunshot wound to her head; it appeared to be self inflicted," said Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis.
"Her body was found at 901 Mangum Street," Lewis added.
"We arrived on the scene around 2 p.m. this afternoon (Sunday). We usually assist Mendenhall P. D.," Lewis added.
The house where Upshaw's body was found is located in the city limits of Mendenhall.
Multiple sources have told WLBT the house where Upshaw's body was found, is the house of former Mississippi State Representative Clint Rotenberry.
Lewis said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate because Upshaw was a State Representative.
Lewis added officials are awaiting the results of the State Crime Lab to determine Upshaw's cause of death.

Jeez, what's going on, Mississippi?
Self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Title's not exactly fitting.

'it appeared to be'

Sure, we're not ruling out murder, but when something looks like a suicide, it's a suicide nine times out of ten.
Guns right put to good use. Bravo!

Even if it is, why would you commit suicide in someone else's house? It seems a strange place to do it, if that make sense?

Maybe he went to the guy's house to kill him, but tried to stage a murder after realizing he wasn't there.

Citation?

Real life isn't like the movies, dude. When the police determine that something appears to be a suicide, it's because they've done the initial checks that indicate it looks that way. Could be the gun in the person's hand, could be primary bloodspatter analysis, could be a suicide note. Most cops, at least up here in Canada, are trained to look for these signs even when first responding. I spent a week learning the finer points of blood spatter analysis myself when I was in the Police program.
Maybe it'll turn out to be a murder later, and they won't neglect the fine forensic analysis that will confirm it or rule it out. But statistically, if it looks like a suicide, it usually is.

Right, but that's not a citation.

No, it isn't. It's difficult to find reliable statistics on how often things that were initially determined to be suicides turned out to be murders. It's more of a common sense thing, and I meant 'nine times out of ten' as a figure of speech.
Trust me, most murderers act on the spur of the moment, and even among those who carefully plan the thing out, you seldom see any so clever as to make a murder look like a suicide to a trained eye.

Then why did you say this? Not trying to be an ass but if you're going to make a claim at least support it with something.

The answer's in the quote.

What about that one guy who was found dead in a bag in a river with a gunshot wound to the head and it was ruled a suicide. Sounds like a movie to me!

That's either police corruption, or it really was a suicide that someone covered up. Full investigations sometimes reveal some strange stuff.
Are you trying to say isolated cases are representative of the trend?

I think I hurt Kaabi's feelings somehow.
If police cases where determined by a first glance we'd all be fucked, I for one don't see what's so weird about questioning "appears to be"

Just think about all the cases that looked one way and turned out another. You really don't know until you have proof

I think you've been watching too many cold cases on A&E.

They might have been having an affair, and he wanted to break up with her and pursue his true dream of banging a 20 year old intern. So she gets mad and to pay him back kills herself in his house. That kind of makes it hard for him to bring chicks there now doesn't it?
I'm glad that a congress member from this congressis gone but sad a human died.
