BEIRUT — In the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronze statue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently under cover of a truce among three factions in the country’s civil war.
Jesus stands, arms outstretched, on the Cherubim mountain, overlooking a route pilgrims took from Constantinople to Jerusalem in ancient times. The statue is 40 feet tall and stands on a base that brings its height to 105 feet, organizers of the project estimate.
That the statue made it to Syria and went up without incident
Oct. 14 is remarkable. The project took eight years and was set back by the civil war that followed the March 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, and the statue’s safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands among villages where some fighters have little sympathy for Christians.
So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacks and so much danger?
Because “Jesus would have done it,”
Best use of resources at a time like this.
It'll ultimately rally non-Islamic forces in the country to support Assad.
Well, I doubt Jesus would raise a giant statue of himself during a war.
But this is nice anyways.
And then he gets hit by an RPG within a week.

Nah, it'll get hit by Israel.
Jesus would have fed the poor and treated the sick with that cash you know, he never asked to be memorialized in statues and shit, all he wanted was that people would remember what he did for the sake of humanity.
how do people even know how jesus looked like

They should point a webcam at it to track how long it takes until the statue is hit by a rocket.

I'd love to see it get hit and then out of the blue a bolt of lightning comes from the sky and hits where ever the rocket came from.

No he wouldn't. Jesus wouldn't need money to treat the sick and feed the poor, he just needs a pile of rocks.

Fuck that, Jesus just needs a rockin' beat and room to pelvic thrust.
It would be cool if the statue was actually a Jesus bronze armour battle mech.
It would smash the enemies of christ

Pretty sure a bronze mech wouldn't last long on a modern battlefield :v:

The man wasn't big on statues. I think he would have been more concerned about us killing each other since that's like the first thing him and the Big G didn't want us to do.

Yes, because an oppressed minority who has absolutely no bearing on the civil war except as targets of opportunity giving itself a symbol of hope is such a terrible thing. How dare they.

well tbh if someone's not a Christian over there, they're pretty much definitely gonna be a Muslim.
And Muslims, while they do not worship Jesus, they do believe he was a respectable prophet. In fact, in discussing Mohammed they tend to append a brief eulogy to his name: "Mohammed, peace be upon him" or "Mohammed, pbuh" and they do the same for Jesus: "Jesus, peace be upon him".
I don't think they'd RPG a symbol of a person they respect.

They also object to Jesus being depicted as a god or any form of divinity. They do agree that he's a great prophet, but see above.
edit: for clarification's sake, do note that the average Muslim wouldn't even mind this, but then there are the literal-minded intolerants especially among their ulema who think otherwise. Most Shi'a muslims for instance wouldn't give a fuck but several old-school Sunnis would definitely have something to say on the subject.

Nah, he'd go in and tell them all to shut the fuck up already.
And they'd listen.

That or he would be shot by either side.
When I saw "raised" I assumed it was a typo of "razed". This is much better news than I was expecting to read.
