Family of Ahmed Mohamed (Clock boy) files lawsuit against former school
The family of a Muslim boy who was arrested after bringing a homemade clock to school filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Texas school officials and others, saying the incident violated the 14-year-old boy's civil rights, prompted death threats and forced them to leave the United States.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Ahmed Mohamed, who was arrested at his suburban Dallas high school in September and charged with having a hoax bomb. He says he brought the homemade digital clock to school to show his English teacher.
Ahmed showed off the clock, made out of a plastic pencil box and electrical wire and other hardware salvaged from his parents' garage, on Monday during a news conference with his parents and attorneys.
Irving police later dropped the charge, but he was still suspended for three days. He never returned to the school; his family opted to have him take classes elsewhere.
The lawsuit names Irving Independent School District, the city of Irving and the school's principal, and asks a jury to determine the damages. In November, the family asked the district and city to pay $15 million or else face a suit. District spokeswoman Lesley Weaver said in a statement Monday that attorneys for the district will review the suit and determine a course of action.
"Irving ISD continues to deny violating the student's rights and will respond to claims in accordance with court rules," she said, adding that school officials for now will have no further comment.
The Mohamed family questioned whether the boy was mistreated due to his religion but the district has denied the claim.
The family has since moved to Qatar, citing threats and a scholarship offered to Ahmed in the Persian Gulf country. Ahmed moved back to the U.S. last month for the summer to visit family and friends, and will do some traveling around the country, but will return to Qatar next month to start 10th grade at Qatar Academy, a private school in Doha.
Are they still milking this situation?
Fuck off. If it was a white kid they would've probably done the same.

i get that lawyers aim high because the actual payout will prolly be negotiated lower but fuuuuck me.
This kid "made" a """clock""", got arrested under suspicion and got to tour MIT and NASA because of it as well as media coverage.
And they STILL have the gall to milk money out of it.
Absolute trash.

don't forget the free college and meeting obama
"My dad helped me gut an existing clock and we shoved it in a pencil box, it's an invention and not a plan to abuse the legal system, we swear!"
You got your 5 minutes of fame. It's way too late for this now. Don't drag the kid through all of this bullshit again.
Didn't they leave the country and move out to the Middle East somewhere?

U.A.E, if I remember right.
Edit: Nope. Qatar.
Ahmed’s family moved with him to Qatar after the Young Innovators Program at the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development said in October that it would give him a full scholarship for his high school and undergraduate education.
Ahmed said on Monday that he had made friends at his new school, which he described as an “amazing opportunity.” He intends to finish high school there and study physics and electrical engineering, he said.
But he misses home and fears for his life, he said.
“What did I ever do to someone to get death threats?” he said. “It’s a really sad reality of it.”
That whole thing still smells like a setup. The family and his father especially gained so much from it. Maybe I just need more tinfoil for my hat and it was really just a harmless "self-made" clock in a briefcase.
he fucking invented time, can you guys be more grateful?
U.A.E, if I remember right.

They moved from the United States to Qatar because they feared for his life? I think that's funny.
Now that you say it, this smells fishy.
i forgot all abou tthis
Now that you say it, this smells fishy.
No shit? it smells more than a fish market.
this is one of those lovely situations that there is no clear good or bad side to be found.
the kid """made""" a clock by ripping open a working alarm clock and stuffing it into a box
he takes it to school, and the school assumes he built a bomb. if it wasn't stupid enough (if you really thought it was a bomb why wouldnt you call the bomb squad or something?). to top that off there were racist comments made against the child, I recall the corrections officer particularly said "yeah, i thought this was the kid" and just anti-muslim rhetoric which further fueled flames.
then after the story blew, yeah the kid was not treated well by the guys in authority, but the family keeps milking the benifits without admitting that he didnt actually make the clock (which as a guy who spends s much time working with arduino and stuff as a kid with no credit, ticks me off to no end)
Not trying to go full Marx here, but it's funny how lots of guys on fp defend the shit out of capitalism, a system based on the sole principle of getting ahead by any means necessary, and then go ahead and trash these people for doing exactly what the system encourages them to do.
Come on guys, if you had a decent opportunity to make a shitload of cash at relatively low risk, you'd probably take it too.
it started off as bad from a kid (who may have gotten the idea from his father) who replaced the casing of an alarm clock with a briefcase essentially, then he got a rediculous amount of fame due to his ethnicity, his father wanted more, kid got a bunch of gifts from Microsoft and similar, then they're sueing the school.
Yes, the goal is attention, whether or not the kid wants it or not IMO
capitalism, a system based on the sole principle of getting ahead by any means necessary
That's not even remotely what capitalism means.

:speechless:
This isn't capitalism. It's a scam.

The Father and Mother have no right to sue because they're both fuckwits who've "Fled" to another nation and demand more money. They're exploiting their own son to gain monetary that likely won't even go back into the US.
Fuck them.
"And now, I will put a clock into a box, make it look like a bomb, and then complain when people think it's a fake bomb"

The kid didn't even do anything remotely special and he claims that he "solders CPUs". He put a fucking clock into a box.

The charge he was written up on with the school was "making a fake bomb" so there's that

"Totally doesn't look like a bomb, guys! Really!"
Whether you're defending the kid or not, you must be absolutely blind if your argument is that the device in question doesn't look like a bomb. Thankfully, it looks as if that excuse has stopped appearing as more and more people actually see the thing he made.
My favorite part is that he is going to be attending that University city in Qatar.
A place known to host radical preachers, isn't the best with human right's, and inside a corrupt country that basically uses slave labor.
Truly he is escaping the terrible persecution here.
I would enjoy the fact that one of this countries schools is getting shafted over typical bad decision making regarding policy, but this is so shameless and exploitative.
