Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released in multiple parts.
According to Square, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be "told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience."
No additional details were provided, including any kind of price or release timing for part one.
milkin that remake cow hard
I'm interested yet highly cautious- Squeenix has never been what you'd call "timely" in terms of their releases. Still, we have no idea how they'll split up the remake or even anything else besides the thread topic. We'll have to see what they talk about in the coming months.
each disc is one season pass you have to buy
I wonder if this is a situation where they are making Advent Children into game form so they can do this.
I know another franchise that went the episodic route...
But seriously, what do they have to gain from an episodic release?
On the plus side we know for a fact that squeenix can count to three.
Well I guess it kind of makes sense since the original game was across 3 discs.
I can see Square Enix messing it up somehow though.

I'm going to guess that it allows them to release the game earlier. FF7 seems like a huge game to remake from the ground up and from what I heard, the director and his team are not the fastest in the release department judging by KH3 and FFXV development time.
Maybe doing episodic releases will allow them to include even the smallest of things from the original while adding stronger links to Crisis Core and a tie-in to Advent Children.
I'd feel bad for FF7 fans if they indeed cut stuff out...
how would that even work.,?
Will the "full game" get a retail disc?
Regardless I kinda don't like the idea.

Supposedly so that more work can be put into the game as a whole by staggering out the game in different releases.
How ever most of the time the reason is probably money.

Yea. I'm curious to see what the cost is per episode, and the time between each episodes release.

Other than money, the fact it allows them to finetune the game and fix a lot of aspects as it releases.
It's also a very large game that they're remaking with much higher standards and a lot more factors to consider than back in the PS1 days so it makes sense that they'd rather release it part by part instead of losing all of their money on a release that takes years.
Holy shit, Squeenix, I was fucking kidding. I didn't actually think you'd do it.
I'm alright with this. The game has to be really huge and I'd rather atleast try it than wait much longer for finished product.

You jinxed it man
You jinxed it man
yep it was all his fault
Kind of ironic how FF7 originally ended up on the PS1 cause they could fit the entire game on the disc easier, yet now they are doing this episodic business.

Tell that one to valve
it makes sense, the game is huge and they are completely remaking it. this is preferable than waiting 3 more years until the game releases imo
Hopefully all the episodes are out by the time it hits PC
IS IT COMNG TO PC.,?!

Well for one, Kitase's been saying for years that remaking FF7 was impossible, it's just too big that it'd never be able to be done, so I guess this is the way they've managed to be able to afford to remake it.
Not only that, but the pauses between the discs is really important to the impact of the game, so this seems like a pretty good way to emulate having to put in the next disc.
I mean, yeah. It was one of the most expensive games ever made and continues to be.

It's coming "first on PS4" so maybe.
Y'know, it may not be so bad if FFVII Remake has the episodes work something like .hack//G.U. and Xenosaga.
As long as each part isn't a full 60 I'm fine
I just can't imagine this will do well for the game pacing. Unless you get all the parts at once (probably for an inflated price), this means you could complete a portion of the game, get left with a cliffhanger and then have to wait half a year or even another year altogether just to get the next part. Ontop of that, god only knows what this will do to the world map, extra content or other such features of the game, because usually games that do something like this don't exactly have backtracking or previous content unless you're the dot-hack games. Not even Final Fantasy IV: The After Years did episodic factors quite right.
It's even worse if they do something like, say, make the entire Midgar 'prologue' preceding the world map a sole part by itself. While it'd be great for seeing if players will want the rest of the game, that's only a small portion of the game in the grand scheme of things. It'd be like if you just completed the Roxas prologue in KH2, and then the game stopped just as he woke up Sora and told you to wait for the next part.
I have so many questions.
How do you make an RPG episodic without taking out the world map? Will there be a continued soon message after leaving midgar for the first time? Then when episode 2 comes out will they just magically appear in Kalm, Or will there be a message on the cave past the midgar zolom telling you to wait for part 2 before proceeding?
Will character saves just import themselves from episode to episode? Will we even be able to go back to past areas in previous episodes or only if they appear in the new episode?
I guess it all depends on how big the episode chunks are. Imagine if square releases final fantasy 7 in a dozen bite sized chunks.
