MUNICH—Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the world was fighting a new Cold War, warning of grave consequences for the West if it didn’t cooperate with Russia in Syria and elsewhere.
“We have slid, in essence, into times of a new Cold War,” Mr. Medvedev said in a speech Saturday to senior international officials at a marquee security conference in Germany.
Mr. Medvedev cited the Syria conflict as an arena of much needed Russian-Western cooperation, especially on military issues.
The key to resolving that conflict, he said, was the cooperation of “Russian and American military officials—regularly, constantly, every day.”
“Military officials must be in constant contact,” Mr. Medvedev said, returning to the point later in his remarks. “They should be calling each other 10 times a day.”
What new cold war... it just never ended, hidden under the rug till it got too big to hide. Medvedev is admitting the obvious. But that the only thing that has really changed is the Eastern European territorial backdrop which once was under Russian influence
Well he's technically not far off.
I'd say we're close, but not there yet. Cold War 2.0 begins the moment one side resumes nuclear test I think. Given the US and Russia are both about to embark on new nuclear weapons programs to replace their current aging weapons I think it's only a few years away.

It'd be amazing to see an actual nuclear explosion. Of coarse it would also be bad, but witnessing the power of the atom, how much just tiny ass particles can basically fuck shit up

The thing is though, Russia already has been updating their nuclear weapons since the late 90's. For example; the RS-24 Yars ICBM - first deployed in 2010 and also the RSM-56 SLBM - which only finished development in 2013 and deployed the same year.
In response, the US has been developing more ABM systems, like the Aegis BMD that the USN uses and also the THEL and HELLADS (even though the latter is mainly for C-RAM).
Plus, we musn't forget China. They've been developing nuclear weapons delivery systems unimpeded since 1960, and their most recent development, the DF-41, has the capability of striking the continental US (and obviously us Aussies).
I personally am unsure of what they will do next though; I think actual nuclear tests are probably unlikely though as both signed the NPT (non-proliferation treaty) and the LTBT (Limited Test Ban Treaty).
But then again, who knows what could happen.

That's the delivery vehicle, not the weapon itself.

The last open-air nuclear test was in 1980. Ever since then nuclear tests have been carried out underground.

True enough but still, MIRV systems are getting better and better from both technology advances and widespread use of GPS. Most missile systems now are capable of about 50 - 5m CEP or even better. I think that nuclear weapons won't just be the only deterrent; development of conventional explosives has been ongoing for decades. We might see the return of "giant bombs" like Tallboy or even better versions of the MOAB.

It's on youtube.
No need for more.
To me, the original Cold War started in the 1850s with the Great Game.
It just had a couple breaks during the World Wars and then another after the transition from USSR to Russian Federation.

Diminishing returns.
In terms of weapons accuracy, even against hard targets a CEP of 50m or 5m doesn't exactly matter.

I expect the next developments will be in manoeuvrable RVs. As I understand it, Russia's latest ICBM features them.
I want to get off this rock full of idiots
I'm really hoping that the threat of nuclear annihilation which would destroy civilisation doesn't come back because of another stupid and pointless arms race.

4K is becoming standard, we need updated footage.
I would say, since China has been carrying open and aggresive expansions in Africa, Russia has invaded a country -fuck off all you putin lovers who say no russian entered Ukraine- and the US power and allies are becoming somehow more unstable.
Hell, as far as I know, the US is pouring billions of dollar into new stuff that the Russians and Chinese can only dream of. Robots, laser weapons, unmanned air vehicles, personal gear....etc.
BUT, the Russians are pouring millions into getting the last practical hard. They recently deployed a EW vehicle -in research for almost 10 years- in Ukraine which basically fried everything the Ukrops had. I mean....wtf? And a US General said it was something they had never seen before which is troubling.
As I see it, there is no way. NO WAY another proxy war Afghanistan or Vietnam style begins. I mean, a direct confrontation between 2 ideological enemies supported by their respective ideological superpowers.
Why? Well, because, as far as media coverage and civil activism goes, a war like Vietnam today would make the US implode. If the US had some trouble with less than 20.000 casualties in Iraq, imagine what would happen if bodies were being sent everyday and people knew what happened.
I expect the push between said powers to be behind stages. Google HQ hacked, STUXNET, Economic wars -we are seeing one right now OPEC vs USA- and so on. You get the idea.
Grab some popcorn.
Can't electric boogoo be considered a meme now

you cant feel shockwaves and appreciate the light through the computer screen, which is what I'm sure he was getting at. I would also like to experience one, but knowing the consequences of detonating one and what it implies, I'm also contempt with not experiencing it
and what I mean by experiencing, is an explosion in the middle of literally nowhere in a controlled way, not one exploding over my house
Can't electric boogoo be considered a meme now
It's was a regular meme before it was an internet meme. I've heard it used several times before by people in their 40s when coming up with the name for a sequel to something
The problem with cooperating with Russia in Syria is that Russia considers Assad the only legitimate power and sees all rebel groups in Syria as the same: bombing targets.

Dare you to look at one once it happens, then 'see' results
The world would be better off overnight if someone just shot Putin
The world would be better off overnight if someone just shot Putin
Or if russians didn't blame everything on the west.
Economy bad, blame the west
People wanting more social freedoms, blame the western propaganda
Chronic alcoholism, blame western lifestyles that people immitate
Don't like what other parties say about your party, blame western ideas for making them disagree
The world would be better off overnight if someone just shot Putin
Pretty sure Putin getting shot would make the world worse off, especially if the person who shot him was from pretty much from anywhere besides Russia. (Even then we'd probably get blamed for it)

Putin built this ideology up. The kremlin own the media in Russia since he scared off all the yeltsin-era media oligarchs and now he can make up any "Enemy at the gates" story about the west he wants. He maintains an 85% approval rating because he's painted the entire world as the enemy of Russia. He's like Kim Jong Un
The world would be better off overnight if someone just shot Putin
Because that would totally not start a war.
Because that would totally not start a war.
I just mean for some Russian Femen protestor or something to do it. Obviously an assassination would not be good, but for some political nutjob to just walk up to Putin and blow his head off would make a difference
I just mean for some Russian Femen protestor or something to do it. Obviously an assassination would not be good, but for some political nutjob to just walk up to Putin and blow his head off would make a difference
You are really thinking off the ledge if you believe that difference is going to benefit us.

Then one of his toadies would just take his place. Or worse yet, the assassination fails and people start to support and empathize more with him.

We'll likely just see testing of delivery systems, and of warheads without the nuclear payload for testing e.g. stealth features.
The Cold War never ended in the first place. The Rooskies just changed characters.

The history of the Russian nation is that it's either been controlled by a strongman of some description or it slides back and forth out of anarchy - mainly because the government is pretty weak and impotent unless somebody strong sits at the helm.
Russia will be persistently lurch in and out of crisis and have these problems until it grants independence to some of the outer regions or decentralises power extensively. Killing Putin won't achieve anything.
