I really should finish this, but I don't really have the patience for it so it'll probably never be finished. The hair killed me, and the jaw killed me again and I just got pissed at it. Oh well, It was good while it lasted, first try on a realistic portrait.

Wouldn't really know it was her unless you told me but it's a nice sketch.
Thanks, this was the reference picture.

Shadows are WAY darker than you made them. Like WAY darker. Try and accurately put the values down.
It needs more contrast. The shadows needs to be a lot darker.
Wow, that's interesting, they were really dark and it looked weird so I just used the kneaded eraser and lifted loads of graphite off. I suck at B&W values.

It's because you didn't put down your shadow shapes accurately. Outline the edges of your shadows and then fill it all in with one base shadow value... preferably the lightest shadow value you can see inside of the shadow shape. Then darken the areas that are darker, to model out the form. That way you won't accidentally make any of your shadows lighter than the darkest area in the areas of light. This is very important to do, and is a time-tested (several centuries old) way to set up your values on any sort of object.
Ehh, it's alright.
Also seriously, reduce the filesize. That image is freaking humongous, there is no reason it needs to take up that much memory. Jpeg compression dude, jpeg compression.
I'm always afraid of JPEG because of the quality, thanks for the tips though, I'm currently doing a value work at Drawing class and was having loads of difficulties. I tried to fill up the darkest parts first, then move on lighter and lighter. Thanks.
i say finish it.
I don't think I will, the jawline was a nightmare and I just gave up, she looked like she had a double chin. I think I'll draw Al Pacino next, but that one I'll actually finish it, no matter how much time it takes, this one was just a little experience anyway.
