EA and BioWare have just announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will get a free-to-play option this fall.
How this works: Players will have access to all eight character class storylines up to level 50, with some restrictions. Going beyond this level to access new game content and features can happen through subscriptions and individual purchases. So, this is like a hybrid F2P model, and microtransations can get you past that level 50 barrier if needed.
Of course, the standard subscription model is still available. With this change, subscribers will now also recieve monthly grants of Cartel Coins, the new virtual currency that is coming to this title.
This fall, SWTOR will go on sale for $14.99, and will include one free month of subscription. More game updates are coming from BioWare, too, so watch for those. This new webpage lays out all the details of the expected changes for both current and new players.
"Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic universe," said Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin.
Does this break a barrier for you? Or, if you're a current player, how do you feel about this F2P change?
expected really.
Oh well, not surprised.
Does this break a barrier for you?
Maybe. I might give it a shot.
EDIT: Wow not worth it still.

Hah. Hahahaha.
eh, I'll just go back and play KOTOR 2 thank you
Wait so it's free to play, but you still have to buy the game, right?
I've heard nothing but bad things about this game, so I'm not really surprised at this announcement.
If they trim down the sidequests a bit, it'd be a decent singleplayer game.
Hah. Hahahaha.
Yay! Now I can pointlessly collect worthless virtual currency!
I don't see why companies bother with the MMO market, it's so ridiculously hard to compete due to the fact that the games require dedication, with most people who would actually consider playing an MMO already dedicated to an MMO, it takes some serious stuff to actually compete. You can't just make a copy of WoW and expect it to sell well, since people will flat out dismiss it as soon as they realise and then go back to WoW.
This is why I'm glad that warhammer 40k MMO turned into a single player one, that and the fact that I have no interest in MMO's.
This ship has already [del]sailed[/del]sunk, EA.
Finally, the ocean will be the Tortanic's final resting place.
lmao called it on day one.

oh the whole customization is a joke because all of them look like humans, and you can just changed your skin pigment to match a different race's. :v:

That gets a thought into my mind, what if past subscribers come back to play TOR because it has a F2P feature and they could pay a monthly fee, do they get to have full access to everything or just the F2P features?

Who didn't see this coming? Maybe now I'll actually have motivation to play it.

Like most p2p to f2p mmos, previous subscribers gone ftp will only get ftp features afaik.
Anyone who actually wants to play the game past there story still has to subscribe and doesn't really change anything for people that play the end game content.
I still don't know if it's worth trying.
When I was a kid I was into all kinds of Korean MMO's because they were some of the only free multiplayer games around but now I only really like Guild Wars.
It really isn't.
Only if other games would start taking in Aion's style of truely F2P...

Some of that is delightfully like this:

What's so bad about it? I'm more interested in the story of what happens and Revan's fate etc. than anything. I can have fun playing just about anything. I'm just curious since with this price drop and all I might actually give it a shot to see where everything wound up.
Still paying a sub because I enjoy and love this game, plus its the only way to get content past level 50.

Too bad BioWare fucked all that up and made it really dumb.
