Croatian TV is reporting that a former Bosnian Croat general has died after drinking a phial of poison at a UN tribunal in The Hague.
Seconds after his war crimes sentence of 20 years was upheld at the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Slobodan Praljak, shouted out angrily: “Praljak is not a criminal. I reject your verdict.”
Praljak, The 72-year-old then raised a small brown bottle to his lips, and drank it in full view of the cameras filming the hearing. “I just drank poison,” he said. “I am not a war criminal. I oppose this conviction.”
Croatian television quoted sources close to Praljak as saying he later died in a hospital in The Hague - though this hasn’t been confirmed. Dutch police declared the courtroom to be a crime scene.
The unprecedented scenes came as judges were handing down judgment in the appeals case of six former Bosnian Croat political and military leaders. They are the court’s final verdict for war crimes committed during the bloody 1990s break-up of Yugoslavia.
As court officials surrounded the grey-haired and bearded Praljak, the presiding judge, Carmel Agius, immediately ordered the proceedings be suspended and the curtains screening the courtroom were abruptly closed to the public.
Within minutes, an ambulance arrived outside the tribunal in The Hague, while a helicopter hovered overhead.
EDIT: Whoops, didn't see there was already a thread in Sensationalist Headlines.
Wild. That's a dramatic way to kill yourself.
isnt this pretty much the same way Göring died?
"I'm not going to jail! I'm not guilty, you can't find dead men guilty!"

it's grim, I know, but I can't help but laugh at the fact he tried to be dramatic, but ended up with these super awkwardly-timed photos that make him look like a clown

I'd argue the situation resolved itself in a way that benefits everyone including the dead guy; saved himself a lotta time spent staring at the cell brickwork and saved the courts the time and money of processing all that bullshit.
Fucking hell. I have zero sympathies for him, it's just disheartening to see him not face his sentence.
How did the poison reach him?
How did the poison reach him?
I would assume via his mouth, since the photograph shows him drinking said poison?

I think they're moreso wondering how it was that he managed to get literal poison into a courtroom. In which case I feel like the answer is that he smuggled it in on his person somehow.
How did the poison reach him?
Probably brought it in through some bottle and security didn't know it was poison or some shit.
He succeeded in one thing though, he turned himself into a martyr. Our prime minister already stated that his conviction is a serious moral injustice towards the Croatian people.
I found an English vid of it and people in the comments are defending him. Jesus
This is like some shit out of a movie.
Like this is the opening scene that was supposed to take down the big bad and then this happens, so they have to send a special agent to track him down or something.
Hot damn.
I would have preferred to see him hang from a rope but this will do.

They tried real hard to deny everything, this kinda goes against that. The Croatians are apparently very pissed that it got confirmed. There was a lot of shit that happened back then. Dad told me about all of it. One of the things was that any humanitarian aid that was going towards us was taken and sold for a lot of money to us.

If that isn't horrifyingly disgusting,I don't know what is.
I really fucking hate nationalism and the genocide apologists/denying.

Not so much on the courts as now they have a very lengthy and thorough investigation into how the poison got into the guys possession.
Have they found out what poison it was exactly?
Have they found out what poison it was exactly?
They only revealed that they did the test and found a lethal chemical substance in the bottle, but still not what type of chemical it is.
