More bad news for Apple users: hot on the heels of Flashback, reports are circulating of another Mac-specific trojan—called Backdoor.OSX.SabPub.a—that is spreading because of a Microsoft Office vulnerability. On Securelist, Kaspersky's Costin Raiu explains that the trojan, which is already a month old, uses a Java exploit to get past malware detection products, before connecting to a command and control server hosted on a server in California. The Trojan apparently spreads through infected Office documents, and it's in "active stage", which means that it searches through documents on infected machines. While Apple eventually offered up fixes for the Flashback vulnerability, this second Trojan looks set to permanently dispel the myth that Macs are immune to malware.
MS Office, regardless of it's platform, is not very secure tbh http://gizmodo.com/5902254/theres-another-mac-trojan-spreading-via-microsoft-office

Looks like they gotta find another excuse to use a Mac now, cause "more secure" sure as hell ain't the case in the public's eye anymore.
This is obvious a ploy by microsoft to weaken the security of their rival. Linux is next. :tinfoil:

Okay so I'm just as much of a mac hater as most other people here, but why are you all poopooing macs over this. Since this is a vulnerability in a microsoft product doesn't that make it microsofts fault and therefore more reason for mac people to say "microsoft products are virus ridden whores". For the record I hate macs, and would rather use windows than get paid to use mac.
Looks like they gotta find another excuse to use a Mac now, cause "more secure" sure as hell ain't the case in the public's eye anymore.
Two exploits in a few weeks is nothing compared to the hundreds that are found almost daily on Windows. In the end, it's still far more secure.
I almost wish I knew an Apple fanboy near me just to rub this in next time he pulls the 'macs can't get viruses herpaderpa' bullshit. Therefore this virus exists because of Apple not taking care of their shit.
So, should we blame Microsoft for every malware found for Windows?
Just out of curiosity, do you know how Java updates are handled on Windows and Macs? Or maybe I should the say the differences?
Just out of curiosity, do you know how Java updates are handled on Windows and Macs? Or maybe I should the say the differences?
From what I understand, Macs maintain Java updates through their own Software Update software, similar to how Linux manages updates.
From what I understand, Macs maintain Java updates through their own Software Update software, similar to how Linux manages updates.
I never understood why Windows never uses a system like this.
In related news, this poster needs to learn the demographics of Facepunch.
Yeah he should definitely learn that everyone on here hates Macs and he should conform to that. Honestly, just because his opinion isn't popular on this particular forum doesn't mean it's wrong.
does like everyone on this forum get massive erections from trash talking macs, really lol it's obvious apple's intended user base are casual computer users (not you)
does like everyone on this forum get massive erections from trash talking macs, really lol it's obvious apple's intended user base are casual computer users (not you)
It's because they downright lie in their ads about macs being better than pcs, an ad lying that much should be illegal.
I'm not sure what you mean by that, I mean both PC and Mac are perfectly fine for that. Especially if you get a custom built one.
Let's see, the things I remember off the top of my head from the ads, "macs don't get viruses" "macs don't get spyware" "PC's crash much more often" "PC's are more expensive to upgrade"
It's because they downright lie in their ads about macs being better than pcs, an ad lying that much should be illegal.
Comparing macs and PCs is really an apples to oranges kind of thing. People who buy a Windows machine are buying them for completely different reasons (usually). PCs have better hardware capabilities, that is a fact, but beyond that, what is considered better is subjective to the user. Also, in Apples defense, a license for OSX costs significantly less and there is one version, which is something I honestly wish Microsoft would pick up on.
I used to despise macs but then my grandma got me one for school, and I ended up loving it. Sure, I miss having a PC every now and then, but it really doesn't bother me. Lesson learned, don't hate so much on products, especially if you have never full time owned one.
I used to be alright with Macs but then my school got me one, and I ended up hating it. Sure, it's quick and mostly error-free, but it's got so many negatives that bug me to hell.
This is obvious a ploy by microsoft to weaken the security of their rival. Linux is next. :tinfoil:
I don't think I'd be too surprised if this was true.

The OS should keep everything compartmentalized and secure on its own, never-mind allowing a program the ability to do something like this.
Vulnerabilities in software just shouldn't happen. The OS should keep everything compartmentalized and secure on its own, never-mind allowing a program the ability to do something like this.
Cool, tell that to Microsoft.
Cool, tell that to Microsoft.
They already know, which is why we have programs like MSE and windows defender built in. Nevermind releasing one patch per infection, just how long is that approach going to cut it for Apple when they are being bombarded with infections.
you people take operating systems way too seriously
They already know, which is why we have programs like MSE and windows defender built in. Nevermind releasing one patch per infection, just how long is that approach going to cut it for Apple when they are being bombarded with infections.
Both those programs work on an after-the-fact, signature based system, which is the oldest and most basic form of antivirus protection and is nothing like the "compartmentalized" form of security you mentioned.
I never understood why Windows never uses a system like this.
It used to work like that back in Windows 9x. Then Microsoft did what they always do when they get their hands on other companies software: They modify it in unsupported ways that only work with Windows and break compatibility with everything else. Windows 9x's Java was called "Java Virtual Machine" and became so different from the original java that you had to have both installed at the same time, which invariably caused severe problems. Sun Microsystems got fed up with Microsofts' shenanigans and filed a huge lawsuit in federal court to remove JVM from Windows 9x (only partially happened) and block it from being integrated into any future Microsoft product (succeeded.) This is why you don't have 3rd party applications on WU. Apple isn't tainted as horribly as Microsoft in that regard, which is why they have Java packages.
So, should we blame Microsoft for every bit of malware found for Windows?
Sure why not, but people get pissed at the whole marketing campaign focused around how macs can never get viruses and shit, its not a mac vs windows thing, its just a "fuck apple and their marketing lies" thing.
Sure why not, but people get pissed at the whole marketing campaign focused around how macs can never get viruses and shit, its not a mac vs windows thing, its just a "fuck apple and their marketing lies" thing.
Please point out an example where Apple has stated that their platform "can't ever get viruses".
Also its MALWARE not virus's. Please use the correct word to describe infections. "There are ...... known virus's for PC's. Not Macs" When Mac replied "Not Macs" people assumed that "Macs cannot get virus's" and/or "There are no virus's for Macs" Then the "Macs are immune to virus's" quote was born. I've not once heard Apple refute the claim. This commercial is misleading to people who don't know any better. I was raging so you might of saw a few different versions of this post that made no sense. I had to walk away from the computer to calm down then come back and properly write what I was meant to write.
