• Why is life worth living for an atheist?

I've come to the conclusion that life is just as valuable as not living because you will eventually die and the impact you've left along with the world will die too, the universe will eventually die, and there's no chance of a legacy ultimately surviving, so why does anything matter? What ever you do will just be forgotten anyway I never said I was Christian...
So we can use facepunch
"The main obligation is to amuse yourself." - SJ Perelman (I heard it when George Carlin quoted it in his book/audiobook Napalm and Silly Putty)
To smoke weed err' day.
If nothing matters that doesn't mean you can't have personal values/goals, just for the kicks; also if this is my only life I'm not going to waste it on suicide
sure everything doesn't matter, but that doesn't mean you cant have fun while you're around just live it the fullest

Why is it worth living for a theist? You have immortality after you die so just kill yourself do it now

Because every little thing you do affects someone, somehow. And besides, who says we won't make some amazing advancement tomorrow that creates infinite life? Life is worth living simply because it's life. Being an atheist has nothing to do with it. As an atheist, I believe that there's no god or afterlife. That's it. Doesn't impact my life any other way. I live to make myself a better man, to enjoy myself, and to help others do the same.
I'm personally enjoying this whole living thing while it's lasting.

I just think it's better than the alternative. The concept of death scares the shit out of me :tinfoil:
Yeah, it is. It's a small spark of consciousness that will never happen again, so I don't see why we shouldn't take advantage of it.
Just because it doesn't last forever doesn't mean that life is any less amazing. You only get one chance at it, so why waste it being a downer?
I actually find comfort in knowing there is no afterlife, what is the point in life if there is heaven. If this is it, then it actually means something, if we go to heaven for eternity, then what is the point of life, just a test? Everything is so meaningless compared to the vastness of living eternally, so life here is pointless. Also, I believe in doing the right thing because it is right, not because of some reward.
To improve the lives of others as long as they live.
So we can make posts like yours in GD. Dohohohohoho.
Bleh , I personally find the fact that I don't believe in a god or that we have a 'reason' to exist as quite liberating, not depressing. Life is nice to live so you can have experiences in it, even if it isn't always rosy. It doesn't matter if you believe in invisible people pulling strings or not.
As an atheist myself, I see life as an opportunity, and pretty much what I mean is that you should live life to the fullest. We'll all fall someday, never to come back, so the least we can do is live it up.

If either of them exist, we can exist indefinitely if we play our cards properly.
Why not?
Well you're alive so you may as well make life worth living for yourself.
It is NOT ABOUT remembrance, memories, leaving impact, or any of that shit. It's about enjoying your life while you have it. Being happy. That's the main goal in life, and everything else branches out from it; having a family, a successful career, getting money to pay for things, or even making the world a better place. All of things we do because it makes us happy.
Life is for the bitches and the drugs.
It began fifteen billion years ago with a light brighter than a trillion galaxies. It began three billion years ago in a pool of muck, when a molecule made a copy of itself and so became the ultimate ancestor of all Life. It began three million years ago, when the first human awoke to consciousness. Ten thousand years ago with the invention of civilization. Five hundred years ago with the invention of the printing press. Fifty years ago with the invention of the computer. In less than forty years, it will end. -- Eliezer S. Yudkowsky For me, the universe's steady march towards complexity is the point of life.
To be honest, living in paradise for an eternity would get boring pretty fast. I live for myself and the ones I care about. Atheists (myself included) live for life, when you die, there is no second chance, so you have to make this one count.
