The man in charge of Internet Explorer has told PC Pro that he's been tasked with destroying IE6. Internet Explorer 6 continues to be the second most used browser version in the world at the ripe old age of nine, according to Net Applications. IE6's position as the default browser in Windows XP means many companies still cling to the browser. The continued use of old hardware in developing nations and consumer inertia have also contributed to IE6's longevity. "Part of my job is to get IE6 share down to zero as soon as possible," said Ryan Gavin, head of the Internet Explorer business group. Gavin said Microsoft will continue to work with companies to move legacy applications to more modern versions of Internet Explorer, as well as continuing to highlight the improved security on offer in Internet Explorer 8. For example, a recent campaign run by Microsoft Australia compared using IE6 to drinking milk nine years past its sell-by date. Yet, despite such efforts, Microsoft has announced that it won't be bringing Internet Explorer 9 to Windows XP, leaving users of that operating system without access to the most modern browser. Nevertheless, Gavin insists that Internet Explorer 8 is making strong progress. "The momentum we're seeing with IE8 is palpable," he said. "It's the world's fastest growing browser." "The momentum behind Windows 7 will drive a refresh cycle," he continued, adding that turning off support for IE6 in a bid to push customers towards later versions was "unacceptable".
About time, because IE7 and 8 were just awesome choices. I use firefox anyway.
I thought this was going to be some butthurt fanboy of firefox/chrome/chromium/opera/seamonkey declaring a jihad on IE.
chrome & firefox are better :monar:
Alot of corporate environments still continue to use IE6. We started to make a push for IE7, however a few of the groups require IE6 due to applications not being able to display correctly. And the corporate environment consists of more PCs than home users.
I have IE6 (i don't use it, i just don't want to update it) In my opinion its much faster then IE7 and 8.
Why the hell do people use IE, no matter what version?
First they should probably work on making IE8 at least -as good- as firefox/chrome. Then he can go around and start destroying old applications.
First they should probably work on making IE8 at least -as good- as firefox/chrome. Then he can go around and start destroying old applications.
IE8 is already out. And it failed pretty hard. IE9 is already in development, supposed to feature HTML5 and some other technologies. I do not know if they'll make it quick or secure.
At werk, I use Opera whenever I can... probably 90% of the pages I have to use/work with (Sharepoint sites, old-ass webapps, etc) work pretty well under "the big O"... I just use IE6 when I need to use Citrix :/ [editline]05:49PM[/editline] Smooth scrolling and mouse gestures FTW!
brb downloading it before it becomes unavaliable
Makes me want to use IE6 just to annoy them.
We should just switch over to IE5, just to spite that guy. The horror!
I liked IE back in IE5, though some tabs would be nice [editline]09:03PM[/editline] Where does Microsoft stand to make money with a free browser like IE? Why are they so hellbent on promoting it?
Where does Microsoft stand to make money with a free browser like IE? Why are they so hellbent on promoting it?
Agreed, there's absolutely no reason to use it over other browsers besides laziness. Why are they expecting IE6 users to go through the trouble of downloading the latest IE if they won't even download better browsers like Mozilla and Opera? [editline]05:12PM[/editline] It's as if Microsoft thinks everyone will hate them and stop buying their products if we don't like their browser the most.
Microsoft needs to stop being so goddamn stupid and force upgrade everybody instead of trash talking their own browser. For fucks sake Microsoft. And that whole you wouldn't drink 9 year old milk is bullshit, you wouldn't drink 1 year old milk either.
I never use IE, literally never.
I never use IE, literally never.
neither do i, but i'm still being rated dumb just for having it :buddy:
Chrome bro is here.
He should help destroy all versions of IE.
opera is the best and anyone who disagrees is hitler
tell me what is to bad about IE? I see it to be no different from chrome except it isn't an eye rape of blue fugly ness.
Where does Microsoft stand to make money with a free browser like IE? Why are they so hellbent on promoting it?
Good will, Google are doing the same. Offering you free products in return for loyalty. Thus you're more likey to buy their products and stay on their site.
My mum works for BT and only in the last few days have they been upgrading the software on the network to IE7. :gonk:
I always liked IE 6 more than 7 for some reason I can't explain. Might have something to do with the fact I can't uninstall IE 7 from vista :saddowns:
yeah because force upgrading is a great choice and certainly wouldn't piss any businesses off if they tried such a thing
that and people will bitch and moan. They can't force us to upgrade their products on their operating system! This is madness!

[editline]01:16AM[/editline] And with upgrading I mean the browser, not the OS.
I've never been fond of force upgrading. I think if I want an older version of the product I should be able to keep it, with exceptions like antivirus software, however when they updated gmod stranded so that you can no longer steal things, they practically took out the whole point of the game.
