Word has leaked out that in its new budget, the Obama administrationintends to terminate NASA’s planetary exploration program. The Mars Science Lab Curiosity, being readied on the pad, will be launched, as will the nearly completed small MAVEN orbiter scheduled for 2013, but that will be it. No further missions to anywhere are planned. After 2013, America’s amazing career of planetary exploration, which ran from the Mariner probes in the 1960s through the great Pioneer, Viking, Voyager, Pathfinder, MarsGlobalSurveyor, MarsOdyssey, Spirit, Opportunity, MarsReconnaissanceOrbiter, Galileo and Cassini missions, will simply end.
I really hope this is just a rumor.
I doubt this very much.
what dumbfuck would stop nasa just as other countries such as china are rapidly investing in aerospace? thats basically just giving up.
He probably thinks oh we have SpaceX now so fuck NASA.
Doubt it. He would lose a lot of voters with elections within a year.
If this is true he won't stand a chance of getting back in office.
This is bad
NO

Obama could do literally anything horrible and still get reelected, no matter what he does he's still better than any Republican nut job that is running
Ain't gonna happen. Science is the LAST thing you take funds from/terminate.
If they do this before they start taxing religious institutes... dunno, things will generally start to look very shitty.

Pffff hahhahaha.
Fuck that, we need NASA
Space exploration is more important than the economy!
Read the article OP, and everyone else in this thread. He may decide to end funding for the Space Exploration missions planning, meaning that there won't be any missions planned while the budget is this fucked up. Yea, it's a bummer, but nowhere in the article did it say "Obama is going to cancel NASA". Testament to Sensationalist Headlines right here.
With the population hitting 7 billion, soon that should be a sign we need more money to explore space.
It's only a matter of time until the earth gets really crowded. It already is crowded.
As interesting as space exploration is, I feel its kind of a useless endeavor. I guess if you're facing economy problems it makes sense to cut down on the funding; though I heard that NASA's funding is enough of a pittance as it is anyway.
This seems like ridiculously short term thinking
Space exploration is more important than the economy!
Spending a set amount on exploring space and securing a future for your entire race is bad.
Spending 180x that amount to kill brown people is good.
I see.
misleading title

it provides jobs, and let's not forget how much humanity as a whole will benefit in the future from the scientific progress

I mean it totally doesn't have anything to do with possibly preserving humanity's future or anything.
Such a misleading title.
obama is a huge supporter in the exploration and potential of science and mathematics - but on the other hand, there is a serious budget crisis at hand. What the fuck would you do if you had his options and a congress of bible thumping republicans against everything rational
I'm going to change it.

Too bad nobody actually reads the articles nowadays.

It's Robert Zubrin, it's not a rumor.
I was going to post it but I was so sad I forgot.
No, bad Obama, bad.
cut some military funding and use it for NASA

Half of NASA's funding comes from defence and military spending.
Space exploration is nothing but beneficial after you get passed how expensive it actually costs to launch a space shuttle. Small compared to the rest of the spending by the government though.
