Contractors demolishing the old Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., have been ordered to sign confidentiality agreements forbidding public discussion of the site, photographs or disclosure of any information about the building where 26 people were fatally shot last December.
Families of the victims and school staff visited the site, but public access is barred.
Rodgers said the goal is to ensure the project is managed properly without interference from onlookers or the infliction of more pain on the community.

I searched the forums, and couldn't find any articles mentioning Sandy Hook, and it's demolition.. care to share?
A Bit Late, Was posted a while ago.
My only issue at one point was that it was a huge tax waste IMO to just rebuild the school, but then I read that the school is outdated and could use the re-build to it's advantage.
I thought they weren't going to demolish the school?
Regardless, demolishing the thing is fucking retarded.

Most schools, and everything in them, are outdated.
Extremely outdated. They get added onto though, not torn down because people are sad then totally rebuilt. It's so pointless
My High School doesn't even look like the same building anymore, and it's only been 10 years
I kinda think it would be the best idea to demolish it, when you got such a massive amount of casualties in such a small building. Pretty much every room you can enter, you can be "Oh, and this is where Lil' Timmy got a 10mm through his spine, leaving him to bleed painfully to death on the floor" "Oh hey, here we got the room where Sally got her back pumped full of 5.56 as she tried to jump out the window to safety!".
Good thing they're demolishing it. It could be haunted.
And before you go "Oh, if you think this should be demolished, then why not just demolish Auschwitz while we're at it, since we're tearing down sites of disasters?", Auschwitz was an actual historical event, where Sandy Hook was a simple mass murder.

Only 10 years for major changes? It was only 20 years ago that we had a new junior high built here, they used to use an old asbestos insulated Cold War era school, which has been cleaned of asbestos and is now an apartment complex.

Addition to this: The Nazis committed atrocities to fulfill their political agenda. Every mass-shooter commits their atrocity to get attention for themselves, so demolishing the site is apt.

Well that's pretty descriptive but yeah sounds about right.

I have mixed feelings about that - I was one of the people at the scene of a terrorist bombing a few years ago and while a lot of the shop was destroyed, it was rebuilt and is still being run today. There is a small plaque outside that marks what happened and a list of people who died from the bomb. Every year, people place flowers and pictures there to mark the loss of the ones that died that night. It was painful to acknowledge and for a long time I refused to go near the place, but seeing it still present helped me move on from the incident.
My case or opinion doesn't apply to that school or the tragedy that happened there, but it would be nice if the school was rebuilt and a similar plaque laid there. Schools are houses of learning - the most important lesson for anyone to learn, big or small, is that we are resilient and we learn from our mistakes. What happened there should never happen again and to my mind, this is the best way for children and adults alike to never forget.

It will always be the site of those childrens deaths. Give it a make over, bring it down and make a new one entirely and it still remains the place where a tragedy took place.

It'll be the site, yes, of course, but it won't be the same rooms and hallways.

Auschwitz is a historical event because it is in the past. This will be an historical event in the future. Auschwitz was once just a mass (mass) murder too.

Sandy Hook will never be written into a world history book. It might have a footnote in American history, but it's certainly not something I'd classify as a 'historical' event.

It's a school. After five years the majority of people in it won't have known anyone.

They'll still know that children were brutally murdered in those locations.

Teachers and families with younger kids will have relationships with that place for years to come. My family was associated with my primary school from the early 80s until the mid 2000s.
Good on them, only sure way to insure children's lessons aren't disrupted by the anguished cries of restless spirits.
I'm not really ok with this.
This feels more like sweeping a bad memory under the rug rather than having maybe a memorial plaque or something like that.
What a waste.
I don't see a problem with this. I can't imagine having to teach or go to that school, having witnessed any of what happened.
I'm willing to bet that the new building will have some ridiculous/borderline stupid security features.
Terrorists win tbh.
Not only were innocent lives taken out, but they got the building destroyed too. If anything, its more incentive to the next nutjob who does this.
I can see the emotional attachments, but really?
It is a site that the school faculty and the families of the victims of the massacre can hardly look at for the massive sense of loss it evokes, and the school itself is hugely outdated. This is a good thing. The new school will be much more modern, more secure, and will undoubtedly still honor the victims of the old school. There will likely be a memorial garden, statue, wing, or shrine devoted to them. The memories will be kept alive without being too stark for those who suffer from them, and the community at large will get a much nicer school. It's a win-win.
If your family and friends were to be shot in your home, I doubt you'd want to continue living there.
For context, considering we're talking about similar events in its broadest sense, what happened to Columbine High School after the incident? Was it demolished/shut down or is it still an active school today after the damage was repaired?
This will get the conspiracy theorists mad.

They demolished the library, which they had just built a few years before, where most of the shootings happened and made a new one at a different location.

"simple mass murder"
"simple mass murder"
Yep. No attempt at displacing or exerminating an entire population, no political connections to any greater generation, no preceeding provocations, and no following effects. Kids just died in an utterly senseless way.
