In my uni like 80 people attended Japanese, like 15 learning Mandarin Chinese. But at the same time 15% of the world speak Chinese, only 2% speak Japanese. Thanks anime and 漫画 From learning Chinese I can pretend to write Japanese at least. 私something squiggly something日语 or 日本语 There was a thread somewhere on the internet that was Chinese people pretending to speak Japanese, but I can't find it.
I feel like a huge weeb-ass dork for already understanding the 4 slang phrases he mentions.

Japan is too metal for simplified characters. 語 isn't even that complicated, step it up mainland (I think Taiwan uses the superior traditional ones, correct me if I'm wrong). The simplified character for 車 makes me physically ill.
I'm aware, but I actually like simplified. I can read both, I originally preferred traditional but now I appreciate how simple it is. I think it still looks aesthetically good, and it's more readable in a digital format. But I agree 车 is ugly.
The advice he gives in this isn't really even than limited to just Japanese. I found it weirdly motivating. I kind of want to open up duolingo or something now. [editline]2nd May 2016[/editline] Interesting side note for you guys above. One of my uni mates speaks fluent japanese, to the point of working as a translator. He's currently taking ancient chinese literature. He doesn't speak a word of Chinese. He's the only one in the class that doesn't. He's passing backed by his kanji knowledge to read traditional characters.
Maybe that works for ancient Chinese, I haven't studied it other than some oldschool pronouns like 尔. For the actual language there are so many meaning differences, different grammar, etc.. I know people that know Japanese and it's hardly helped them other than the occasional character. Not to mention spoken also has pronunciation tones and listening.
Main issue I'm running against is that I can hold up study for at least 2 months but then it steadily drops to 0 again. Guess I gotta hit those self-learning books first to actually refine my study methods.
why would anyone want to learn japanese
why would anyone want to learn japanese
The same reason anyone else wants to learn any language.
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
people like learning things for fun, it doesn't need to always be practical
why would anyone want to learn japanese
to pick up hot hot anime babes??
You know I've been learning Japanese myself. The Kanji is o sugi if you get me. I've learned most of the hiragana and katakana I believe though. Including a couple kanji. Verbs seem pretty tricky though like he said.
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
People don't need a reason to learn a language other than finding the language interesting and wanting to learn it It doesn't need to be "practical" or "relevant" (whatever the fuck that means in this world where English is pretty much the universal language). Get off the high horse.

If I were going to learn a language, I wouldn't whip out statistics and all that shit about how many people worldwide speak the language. If there was a particular country or culture I liked, I'd learn about it just because it appeals to me.
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
"Hey guys i think i'm cool for teasing other people for trying to learn what i believe is an obsolete language! i haf frends"
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
What if you're a foreigner and got a job in Japan? If you wanted to have any sort of social life you'd have to learn Japanese.
Now I can watch my favorite anime without subtitles. [sp]...And be a weeb loser in the process.[/sp]
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
People like you are exactly what concerns me about learning japanese. I personally want to learn japanese myself, since I show an intrest in the culture, and not to mention it would be amazing to play Japanese only video games and understand what the fuck is going on, but I'm afraid I'll get called a weeb for trying to find a good learning site or whatever
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
how can you say this... the anime industry is booming these days... anime is everywhere... to say the language of anime is irrelevant is a mockery to today's society
Same thing at my college. They teach Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic. Obviously most people pick Japanese. Every year, the freshmen for Japanese are always the weirdest people I have ever met in terms of clothing and attitude. But that's a story for another time and place, if anyone is interested. Unsurprisingly, most of them bail or fail before the year is over. The people that stay are pretty relaxed in general, not acting like they're addicted to anime and such at least. I also have to disagree with it not being practical or fluid. I know languages that are far worse in those terms.
why would anyone want to learn japanese
15 months ago I was particularly bored and really needed something to do. No regrets.
I don't think there's anything wrong with learning a language because of an interest like anime, I wouldn't personally do it, I'm past the point in my life where I'm care free enough to learn something for the hell of it. For me it was the other way, I learned Chinese because it would be useful in finding work, stayed because I actually find the language, culture and people really interesting. I'm a bit of a sinophile now, my girlfriend is even Chinese. [editline]2nd May 2016[/editline] I even find most white girls comparatively unattractive now, could not have imagined that when I started, I thought Chinese girls were ugly, holy fuck. I always thought guys like me were weird as fuck and now I'm one of them. I've got the self confidence to back it now at least.
but it's one of the worst languages out there least practical, least relevant and least fluid the only people who seem to want to learn it online are people who watch too much anime
I'm Japanese-American and one of my goals is to (eventually) learn Japanese because its a major part of my cultural background and a lot of my family speaks it. Also least relevant or practical? Are you serious? What about businessmen doing business in Japan? Knowing the language of the locals would give you a huge edge when it came down to negotiation Or what about people who may end up spending a large amount of time in Japan (Military, Military families, tour guides, etc) [editline]1st May 2016[/editline]
I don't think there's anything wrong with learning a language because of an interest like anime, I wouldn't personally do it, I'm past the point in my life where I'm care free enough to learn something for the hell of it. i don't see how not learning japanese (or any other language) could be useless. it only makes you more qualified for certain jobs. (how do people become weabs if other people don't translate the animus)
