After being locked in a glass house for 6 days (144 hours) without food playing paid request by the public on Dutch national radio, the 3 DJs (Gerard, Giel & Michiel) exited the glass house at 21.30 local dutch time. The project raised more than 12.2 million euros (and counting!) helping pregnant mothers. The money will all go to the Red Cross whom will help pregnant mothers third world countries that usually do not have the necessities to give birth to a baby (and making sure it lives).
Other similar events were held in other countries such as Kenia and Sweden.
Economic crisis my ass.

No, the economic crisis still exists
Economic crisis my ass.
The economic crisis is real, it just feels like it hurts the businesses a lot more than the consumers (at least in Belgium)
People this year spent a lot more on christmas gifts and family meals than last years, and are saving up more money.

The biggest amount of money came from businesses though..
The biggest amount of money came from businesses though..
Yeah, that's odd. Most likely for publicity, unless the Dutch law doesn't forbid donations from businesses.
Even in a crisis a few millions are just peanuts for big companies.
Most stupid charity ever. I have serious objections to this.
Spending 12.000.000 to stop infant death in a country, that is already overpopulated and underfed.
If this is succesful, then it will create more problems than it will solve, and if its unsuccesful we just poured 12 million, that could have been put to good use elsewhere, down the drain.
Edit:
Rating me dumb for being realistic. You guys are the biggest assholes on the planet. You dont like hearing that those extra lives create problems.
Im not saying this because I dont care about those people, Im saying it because I care deeply for them. I want a better life for them.
All you care about is telling yourselves youre doing something good, even though its making their lives collectively shittier. You are truly selfish.
I can see why this is being done, people I suppose are seeing saving the lives of a few now being worth the misery of many more in the future, because those future people don't exist yet. But I really think we should focus more on things like ending hunger and stopping corruption first.

So we should just let children die due to illnesses we can cure for over 70 years now as a means of population control?
Please tell me how that is fair to the children.
How is it fair to let them live in total underfed agony?
I'd rather spend the 12 million to educate the parents of these children, and to provide them with means of contraception.
And stop rating me dumb, if you disagree then just rate disagree. I am all for solving third world problems, but this project is just typical western.
"lets gather money, and swear to use it against something that sounds bad to us" so we feel better, when really we should pledge the money to a cause they feel is hardest for them.
Giving them more mouths to feed is not making their lives easier or better.
I wonder why FP is so pessimistic about this. I mean, it's for a charity and all you think about is "Oh well they're overpopulated anyway" or some shit. God dammit people, for fuck sake.
If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population!
Humbug!

This is where youre wrong. Im not saying "oh its overpopulated anyway so who cares"
I care deeply for their fate and that is why I say, spend the 12 million constructively instead of just spending 12 million on something that sounds good.
Yes, preventing infant death is a noble cause, but we have to ask ourselves, why are infants dying at such a massive rate, will preventing those deaths solve problems or create them, and arent we just a bunch of selfish westerners who'd rather feel good than admit something that sounds bad can actually solve problems? Nobody there has the methods or the means to support all those mouths.
Helping them, would be spending the money to educate them about overpopulation and birthcontrol methods.
Do any of you REALLY think giving them a 12 million dollar stash of medicine is going to improve anything for those people?
No, you just want to "cure the little baabies cuz they so helpless" and then lie in bed feeling good about yourselves because in your mind you've improved the world even though you made it shittier. The problem isn't that babies are dying. The problem is theyre being born in an overly populated area without any means to feed them, leading them to have horrible painful lives. Its better to lower the rate at which children are born through education about condoms.
Spend the money there.

It's spent in areas the Red Cross is already active in, but has no health clinics.
It's not all going to "stashes of medicine", it is also being used to build health clinics and educating women in these areas about pregnancy (plus caring for the child after) and indeed as you mentioned; contraception.
It's against infant mortality, which includes feeding etc. It's not like "OH YOU GAVE BIRTH OKAY BYE".

You are truly selfish. You call us selfish after we donate over 12 million euro's to charity. This charity is saving pregnant mothers.
Your idea of helping people is by killing the mother and unborn child, so that the rest of the family can't get enough work done to feed themselves.
No. The entire point of getting children there is so you have someone that can help you feed your family. It works. However, many people there die because the health care simply doesn't exist. Do you know how high the chance to die while giving birth is? It's way too high and it's a reason why this charity exists.
You are probably the biggest hypocrite I have ever seen in my entire life.
My friend was Dutch, and his wife miscarried, and it was fucking awful and I wish to see this improve that for anyone in the future. You do not know how stressed and sad he was.
At first it looked like the sign said "Lets hear it for the rabies!"

I am Dutch as well, no point in speaking of we.
And youre still not getting my point.
Yes donating 12 million is great, but the cause its donated to is stupid because it is something that sounds bad to western ears, so we want to fix it.
My point is, dont fix what us westerners want to fix, fix whats the africans themselves want fixed.
Theyll have to live with the consequences.
Fyi, I donate 1200 euros a year to causes that do actually benefiet the africans

This was also in Holland, where miscarriage is a huge problem because its not overpopulated or underfed.
Try to see my point
Do people not grasp the concept of lowering overpopulation by raising the standard of living?
Furthermore, why are robots posting on FP?
This stuff makes me ashamed to be Dutch, its a damn shame how easy Dutch people are to be deceived. Extending African babies their lives will just give them to oppertunity to realize how fucked and insignificant their shitty lives are.
Meanwhile there are Dutch people who are without shelter and food these christmas days. 12 milion for some babies people will never meet in real life, but some spare change for a fellow Dutchman who lost his job during recession? nahh, typical western behavior.
I also hate all charity bullshit, here's why;
First they make you feel bad about a situation you don't have ANY control over. Then they give you the oppertunity to donate money and act how it is going to help the situation. While in reality the majority of the money will be put on a Swiss bank account.
Africa needs to develop on it's own! Did western European countries ask for charity in their developing ages? NO!
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for one night. Teach a man to fish and he'll provide for his family.
Sorry for being sucha downer during holidays but i like to stay realistic and not let my get clouded by feelings of guilt.

No, they took it.
As in they colonized places, took slaves and resources.

Welcome to the world of historical western growth.
Development is part of a culture.
Most native africans dont want a structured western-inspired culture where they work from 9-5.
Take it from someone who livef in Mali for 3 years trying to teach people there how to irrigate their crops.
They worked as long they were in my direct line of sight. When I left for the city to get supplies (a 2 day car trip), they'd sit down and enjoy the weather again.
They onlystarted working again when they saw the dusttrail from my Isuzu pickup in the distance.
I asked my local friend Kimba, and he said they worked so as not to offend me, or so as not to look ungrateful, but that they had no desire to have crops of their own. Too much work.
They not lazy, unfriendly or anything, not at all. They are just not at all motivated to live by western standards, motives etc.
We should not feel superior, and definently shouldnt force our society upon them

I just don't understand how you think it's bad to save families. Sure, they get overpopulated, but that's how a third world country becomes a first world country. First, they have a high death rate and to compensate it, a high birth rate. Then, they get hospitals, modern medicine and stuff like that. As a result, the death rate falls. The birth rate stays up, but after a while, that drops too, because they no longer need 7 children per couple, but only 2 or 3. After a while, the birth rate drops so low, that the birth rate and death rate are both low, with the birth rate slightly higher than the death rate. That's just how it works.
We're helping them, you just don't see it.

That's not how it works!
You're kinda taking a big leap from "high death rate, to compensate high birth rate" to "then they get hospitals and modern medicine".
I've been personally involved in helping those areas you talk about. I was in Mali for 3 years.
Africa has been like it is now since forever, and it's not gotten any better since then.
You claim 'they need 7 children per couple'. What's really happening is, these people are totally oblivious to how sexuality works or they just don't care (yes that is a mentality I have personally encountered) and they just have sex when they want to. Sex is one of the few things they enjoy doing, and have access too.
They dont want westerners to come and tell them to stop doing it because they don't know what overpopulation is. They don't know any different.
They are poor because of this, and even if they would have money then there still wouldn't be any food to buy with it... It's not that they are planning to have 7 children per couple to compensate for the death rate.
