I've always wondered why people hate "techno" so much.
And I am using "techno" in the blanket sense of the term, as Americans use it to describe almost any electronic music. I know all the different genres, I don't need to be schooled, I just want to keep this easy to understand.
I like to listen to hardcore, but I quickly picked up on a distaste for it coming from the general public.
Is it because it doesn't sound "real"?
Is the lack of vocals too boring?
Is a 4/4 kick too much for some people to handle?
Are whiny leads/pitched up vocals too obnoxious?
I know trance and other cheesy EDM noise is known for being "gay ass shit", which I agree with, but I'm just curious as to what about the music specifically turns people off so much.
So what if the track doesn't have any original singing? Most of the time really catchy lyrics from rap songs are sampled and make the track really interesting. I honestly don't see that as being the big turn off for most people.
Sometimes I wonder if its all about image. I'm thinking there are people who associate techno with nerds/"eurofags". That's natural, and I can understand that. I've caught myself thinking prejudice thoughts too.
A girl I hang out with, who is frankly a simple person, absolutely HATES "techno", but is a sucker for womanizing music [I like rap/R&B, not hating] purely because of how "sexy" it is. Same for some guys, they just like the instinctual indulgence in rap songs. Gets them pumped up, I understand that, I love that feeling, but I am also a very musical person and need something more musically [for lack of a better word] advanced.
I lean towards the idea of those who listen to "techno" having a better musical ear. We can pick out sounds on a different level than others. I know it sounds like elitism, but I've always had an ear for metal too, which I have heard the same about. I can hear past grinding guitars, down tuned bass, and double kick drums, and I hear individual riffs, melodies, and rhythms. Sometimes I'll be humming along to an [without me realizing it] obscure melody/riff/whatever, and someone will say "dude, I didn't notice that!"
So facepunch, what is YOUR opinion on the matter?
i lik afex twins
I don't know anyone who hates techno like that.
I like techno.
Because if it's made with computers it's not real music.
If it's made with like, guitars and sythisisers and drums and stuff then it's real music and it has notes and stuff.
But making music with a computer?
That's just ridiculous!
[editline]05:02PM[/editline]
seriously though i really don't know
[editline]05:03PM[/editline]
actually i did answer my own question there but it's a dumb reason
[editline]05:03PM[/editline]
probably because they seem to think it's the same beat over and over again with nothing different
half way through shine on you crazy diamond my sister said it wasn't real music because it had no vocals
[QUOTE=Reaver1991;17397498]i lik afex twins[/QUOTE]
I know, they're awesome. I'd like to meet [B]them[/B] one day.
:smug:
me 2
It's funny because it's really one person.
Awesome techno is really hard to find, but when you find it it's incredible.
I dislike the metalheads who say it is "too fast" then listen to music that's even faster.

Link i just gave is awesome.
YOU BROKE AUTOMERGE! DAMN YOU!!!!

no it's not
it's richard and james
[editline]12:08AM[/editline]
hurr
I hate how their argument is "it's the same shit over and over again"
When music that uses guitars and drums, uses the guitars and drums over and over again! (assuming that they hate electronic music and love acoustic music)
[QUOTE=Reaver1991;17397716]no it's not
it's richard and james
[editline]12:08AM[/editline]

and D.
afex twins would be no where without D.
People hate techno because most of it is pretentious and sounds the same.
[QUOTE=pie_is_good;17397602]Because if it's made with computers it's not real music.[/QUOTE]
This one always makes me rage, because for 1. People don't know about the various hardware and 2. What constitutes "real music"? It's just sound waves either way. I click a note, you pluck a note. Also, the computer doesn't make the music itself, there is a person behind it, the same way a guitar doesn't play music without a person.
But yeah I can understand why someone would think that.
Edit:
[QUOTE=Doriol;17397800]People hate techno because most of it is pretentious and sounds the same.[/QUOTE]
Huh. I didn't know there was an air of pretentiousness around the music. I know what you're saying, but I haven't heard that one before.
There is no soul
i like electronic music, i even make some in FL studio
Because people are fucking idiots. If you ever have a question as to why a group of people don't like something(Blindly fucking hate it is a better term.), use that answer. It's true, shutting your mind to shit, does make you an idiot.
Also, people think that it's easier to make techno than any other sort of music because it's all on the computer. That's just not true. As a techno, industrial, or any other sort of electronic music artist, you have complete control over the whole song, and have to do it all yourself. Creating individual, and different tracks with good beats isn't an easy feat to do for more than a few songs. Just because it's on the computer, people imagine it has some sort of button you press and it gives you a song. This isn't so. Good electronic music takes a lot of work, as does any sort of music.

Playing a drumbeat is more difficult than making a drumbeat on a computer.
[QUOTE=Skogslarve;17397869]Playing a drumbeat is more difficult than making a drumbeat on a computer.[/QUOTE]
Thats true, there is the technical aspect of being able to play your instrument well, but the concept/notation/layout of the music still has to be thought out the same.
Edit:
Then again, you have to learn the software, maintain computers, and figure out hardware.
Just as you take years learning the drums, you take years to become computer savvy.
Edit: Haha how could I forget about DJ'ing. Learn to beat-match or your mixes will fail. I have yet to see a "techno" artist plug in an iPod and just sit there in front of a huge crowd.
Being a drummer myself, I would say it's more fun playing the drums.
I hate the use of techno as a blanket term. You guys all suck. Especially OP. Just call it EDM or something.
Good EDM or music that uses electronics:

People spend years to try to get the "good sound". It has the same learning curve as playing drums.
Don't tell me you can magically create music that sounds good on a computer like any retard who has this argument says he can. It's like you play the drums for the first time and say you're as good as a professional. You wouldn't be able to hear the difference cause you'd be lacking the ability to hear the difference between good and bad electronic music.
Oh and your soul thing is really just a matter of opinion. I find trance very emotional when it's really good.
I could just say your music doesn't have a soul cause it isn't my cup of tea.

Having making-trance as a hobby myself, I would say it's more fun than playing real drums. (I've actually played drums too, and yes it's hard. But it was boring so I stopped.)

Chill brah, I'm right there with you. I did it for the thread's sake. A good bit of people wouldn't know what exactly we are talking about.

I wasn't trying to be a dick, soz. But perpetuating lack of knowledge is bad. :c
Every time I hear "electronica" i cringe.
