• Sikh Group Asks For Media Not To Call Rotherham Grooming Gang “Asians”
A Sikh group is asking Media along with politicians to stop calling the grooming gang from Rotherham “Asians” when referring to them. They say that it besmirches communities and the term is too vague. Four out of the six people that have been jailed for the abuse of young girls in Rotherham, including rape, are of Pakistani heritage and the other two are British women. The chairman of the Sikh Federation UK has said that he hoped that the prison sentences would bring some measure of justice to the victims, who endured over a decade of sexual abuse that was horrific. One of the Sikh Federation UK demands was published more than a year ago asking that the media and other public bodies stopped using the term “Asian” when talking about the perpetrators and sited their request as being for reasons of political correctness.
http://www.rotherhamnewsheadlines.co.uk/sikh-group-asks-for-media-not-to-call-rotherham-grooming-gang-asians/ I know it's not from a main "acceped source" but it's a valid point. The term 'asian' covers a gigantic demographic of people, from those in Japan to the middle east and should not be so generic, spanning across hundreds of countries, cultures and religions. I am sure these sikh's are not the only group that are offended by being called asian and see this as a problem. Someone who is from Pakistan is entirely different both ethnically and culturally different to someone from China who can also be deemed 'asian' and yet the media uses this term constantly when depicting the race of an offender.
Here in Australia, "Asians" usually doesn't include Indians or Pakistanis.
I can definitely understand why they would oppose use of the term Asian in this context. Pakistani would perhaps be a more appropriate term, given most of the offenders were of Pakistani origin.
Here in Australia, "Asians" usually doesn't include Indians or Pakistanis.
It varies between countries. In the US, Asian usually doesn't refer to the people of the Indian subcontinent either. I've heard that "oriental" is sometimes used to distinguish East and West Asians in Europe, though in the US "oriental" is often considered derogatory.
In the UK, I've heard "Asian" refers to south Asian rather than east Asian like it does here, Aus, and in the US as well, I think. Why can't they use "Pakistani" or "Indian"?

My definition of Asian is a lot more simple. Narrow eyes, light skin - Asian Narrow eyes, dark skin - Southeast Asian Wide eyes, dark skin - South Asian Wide eyes, light skin - Notfucking Asian.
Here in Australia, "Asians" usually doesn't include Indians or Pakistanis.
AFAIK in the UK we don't use Asian to denote people from SEA or China or whatever only Pakistanis and Indians Maybe it's just a local thing but I've never heard it used any other way.
Indians and Pakistanis are South Asians, I've never heard them called otherwise.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it distasteful and kind of a sign of how badly educated and stupid and likely to be on a grainy youtube video shouting at a brown people you are to use the term pakis

However has become a term used to describe any brown person, typically as a derogatory word because of all the linked issues with the pakistani community and illegal activities such as (Rapes, robberies etc) such as those committed by pakistani rape gangs.

There aren't many where I live, anyway. Hard to tell them to fuck off where they came from if they've not even come to steal our jobs, ect.
We call the Pakistanis Pakis here on national TV here in Australia. Paki isn't considered derogatory.
Gotta love how Sikhs always have to say "no, blame the muslims".
correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it distasteful and kind of a sign of how badly educated and stupid and likely to be on a grainy youtube video shouting at a brown people you are to use the term pakis
Should it really be racist? Brits, Japs, Turks, etc. Seems like a shortened term for their nation. Even Japs is offensive. It seems really selective and arbitrarily.
Gotta love how Sikhs always have to say "no, blame the muslims".
That's funny. I recall them saying something along the lines of "don't lump us in with these assholes".
They say that it besmirches communities and the term is too vague.
Not a single mention or even implication that it's the fault of muslims.
Yeah I use Asian to refer to South/east Asians like Chinese, Japs, Kors, Thai, Vietnams. The North probably doesn't refer them like that due to the demographics.
Damn it, when I read "grooming gang" i thought this was gonna be a nice story about a gang of hoodlums giving out free shaves and haircuts

To use your comparison, it would be like if someone described a store run by an Asian-American as a "Jap-shop" regardless of whether they or their family are from Japan. It's extremely ignorant at best.
