A group that lobbies against discrimination in the scouting movement says Boy Scouts of America has revoked the charters of a Methodist church for refusing to remove scoutmaster Geoffrey McGrath after he came out as openly gay
The Boy Scouts of America has shut down a Seattle troop for its refusal to remove an openly gay Scoutmaster.
The BSA has revoked the charters of the Rainier Beach United Methodist Church and its two scouting units, Troop 98 and Pack 98, for standing by Geoffrey McGrath after the BSA ousted him as a Scoutmaster in March, according to Scouts for Equality, a group that lobbies against discrimination in the scouting movement.
The church’s Rev. Dr. Monica Corsaro has refused to remove McGrath from his leadership position. “Based on our religious principles, we will continue to act as an autonomous church that does not discriminate,” she said in a statement to Scouts for Equality. “We will continue to have our troop meetings here, every Thursday night, with business as usual.”
So glad I stopped going to this bullshit
Glad that they're standing up to the bullshit and the church is supporting him.
What the fuck, I thought they started allowing non-straight Scoutmasters. Or was it just the Scouts themselves?

I believe it's just Scouts.
Boy scouts are full of shit.
Went for like a month, everyone was a total douchebag.

You can have scouting without religious bigotry. Canada does it just fine.

fucking douchebag kids.

i think its more representative of certain cultural groups. i find only conservative white families enroll their kids in the scouts, and conservatives groups in the states are more bigoted than they are here. but that's just what i've noticed.

Really? Everyone I knew was pretty much a weirdo
Really? Everyone I knew was pretty much a weirdo
It's both. Always both. For the 2 troops I participated and wasted a couple years with, it was weirdos and douchebags with a superiority complex. God this stupid little cunt of a kid thought he was hot shit since he could tie a knot and refuse to acknowledge evolution.
Really? Everyone I knew was pretty much a weirdo
different group may act differently.
...I had fun in scouts...
Wait wait wait wait, since when can the fucking BSA revoke a church's charter?? Thats like burning down the fucking church, except with no fire.
What the fuck. This is what happens when BSA gets taken over by mormons.
I'm serious, its leadership has been taken over by primarily mormons.

Please tell me its just the scouting charter, and they didn't just burn down a church because they refused to discriminate.

WHAT?! Scouting without bigotry? Next time you blatantly lie at least try to make it halfway believable.
This guy... next he'll tell us Canada has jetpacks or good healthcare or seals.

Needle in a haystack.
I was in boy scouts for years. My troop was very chill about everything but whenever we went to a big BSA camping venue all the other troops at these events were super awful and uptight about everything.
Unless you get lucky like me don't waste your time with the BSA
The main thing I remember about scouts were the hyper-conservative, middle class, middle aged white dudes in short shorts, standing there with their hands on their hips yelling at you for not being out of your tent the instant they asked.
Scouting in Australia is still fine too, the only mention of religion we even have is in our oath and pledge and even then no one really cares. We do have a bit of an issue with politics but eh.
That episode of South Park comes to mind.
I go to a troop that's in a mormon church and all of them but me is mormon and I guess they're okay with me being gay. Kinda weird, but California I guess.
Australian Scouts wasn't very religious tbh, the only thing religious about it was saying a pray at the opening and closing and doing the scout oath
"To my god, and to the Queen of Australia" and that was it, everyone was so laid back but I quit because the leaders got real strict and eliminated the fun from it
The troop I briefly went to shut down last year because there was only like two kids, both brothers. One an annoying conservative twat. The other one was pretty chill and actually is pleasant to be around.

Jesus Christ. Even my ROTC department isn't that strict.
I'm sorry but this was the first thing that I thought of

I haven't really enjoyed Boy Scouts. Most of the troops I've been in aren't too strict, but all the kids in them tend to be weird, a douchebag, or something of the sort.
I went on a canoeing trip a couple of years ago and these two ten year-olds forgot to bring mosquito repellent.
I had to get treated at a hospital after the trip because of how many bites I had amassed over six days. Not to mention the car broke down on the way to the camp and back, and they both kept yelling "No, you turn HERE!" to the driver the entire trip.
If you are in a good troop/council scouting can be a great experience, not all of them are conservative or homophobic assholes. I never had issues in scouting and actually benefited a lot. We met at a baptist church for awhile, when they asked the leaders to teach Christian beliefs as part of the meeting we left (They meet at a Methodist church now). Since then there has been no issues that I have heard of.
The troop had/has Christian, Jewish, and a large amount of non-religious members and leaders. The troop also had members go to council meetings to support the switch to allow openly gay scouts.
I got to eagle and generally had a good time.
though yeah there were a lot of douches and weirdos, I was probably a weirdo. But really we're on facepunch, it's the pot calling the kettle black.
ahhh boy scouts. Back in cub scouts when our pack was confined to our school, we had fun and actually did stuff. Then I got to boy scouts and we went to meetings with 3 other packs and it turned into lectures :/

I learned so much about the song that gets on everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves, I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves and it goes a bit like this...

Really depends on your troop
My scouting troop was an invaluable and awesome experience. I've done things I never would have done before if it wasn't for scouting, and most of the people in our troop were actually rather normal kids vs being exceptionally weird/religious/whatever. Our troop was large (50-100+ active people), we owned our own bus, focused on activities and outings over gaining rank though people of high rank earned it because they were dedicated to doing so, not because we forced them, etc. Caving, mountain hiking, climbing, kayaking 60 miles over a week or so, etc.
On the flip side I've visited other troops in our area and they were awful. Tiny in size, entirely focused on getting ranks/merit badges, some of them were just full of awkward people, etc. I was lucky to be in a clearly really good troop and thats where scouting shines.

This. Try and find big troops if you ever get into scouting (though for most people on this website its too late lol). The big ones are likely going to be actually good.
My troop was actually pretty chill and it was a wonderful experience especially when I attained Eagle, in general my Scouting experience was phenomenal besides a couple of arrogant guys here and there.
A couple friends of mine came out of the closet after they attained their Eagle, and I was worried that they would loose their rank. Thankfully they didn't, however its a rather sad day when someone looses their Eagle rank by just being gay.
