Hello Facepunch. I have this idea but I'm not sure if it's possible. Basically, we all know DeviantArt sucks. Its full of 10 year olds who dont know how to draw for shit. There are a few good, talented people but they are hard to find. The rest of he site is artists who are actually trying to improve but don't even get one pageview a day Nd don't get any help from the community. I want to know if it's possible for us Facepunchers to create a whole new site like DA, but for amateur artists making an attempt to get better at drawing. I'm sure I'll be getting tons of boxes but I'm really serious about this. I think it could work if I just get a few people to work on it. I would do this myself but I don't know crap about coding and cant afford to pay hundreds of year for a website with my own domain name on some site creator. I've already got some ideas on how this site will function. What I'm thinking is a system where every piece of art uploaded has to be approved by someone before it can go on the site so there isn't tons of crap ms paint pictures all over. Another thing would be a forum for people to link their art and get critiques and a comment box sort thing on peoples profiles that is especially for other members to give tips and advice. I'm not even sure if this is possible though, which is why I need help. As for appearance and a title, I haven't though of that yet. So Facepunch, you wanna make q website with me? -prepares to be pummeled with boxes-
It won't get popular. Not popular = useless for improving.
good idea! just like FPSpapaya !!
It'd be cool I have a deviantart and I draw and take pictures but it's so annoying now I rarely check it. I think with the how you have to put art online and get accepted will turn away people but if you say that if so many people "dislike" it than an administrator could take it off. I know some coding but this is a great idea.
good idea! just like FPSpapaya !!
Why do I sense sarcasm
Why do I sense sarcasm
Because of my post's lack of majuscules and how there's space before the exclamation marks. Also if you didn't know, FPSpapaya was Facepunch's attempt to create a site that didn't suck as much as FPSbanana, but it never really kicked off- which I'm sure an alternate DeviantArt won't either.
I'm sorry if you don't know coding yourself ur never gonna find anyone who is as enthusiastic as you are to code for you for free. DA is full of great people, and they arent hard to find if you try
Conceptart looks like one of those websites that randomly pops up as my homepage when I get a virus And Pizza seems semi enthusiastic :)
I want to know if it's possible for us Facepunchers
I stopped reading there. Making it a project for facepunch is bound to fail, you either make it yourself (and then add people to help out) or it won't happen at all. Ok I only said that to make a point, here is something else I want to talk about:
I've already got some ideas on how this site will function. What I'm thinking is a system where every piece of art uploaded has to be approved by someone before it can go on the site so there isn't tons of crap ms paint pictures all over.
This might sound like a good idea, but it is going to fail horribly. What if that crappy ms paint-picture is the start for a great picture? There is going to be a lot of elitism if you try to self-moderate it, let anyone upload pictures instead. One idea could be a voting system where people can vote down pictures (i.e 20 votes down deletes the picture within 72 hours, and it notifies the author so that he/she can save the picture), but as you might guess it could be abused by people too. deviantart is only shitty because there is such an abundance of shitty artists, this means that there is a lot of extremely talented artists too. deviantart is a great site for people to showcase their art, and it is extremely user friendly too. The fact that anyone can upload their art is what makes it so great and it is also what makes it shitty too.
You make a good point, but what I'm trying to do is get around the shittyness with the site. I see that there are a lot of problems wig it and you guys stated a lot of them but its possible to fix them. It's not a project for all of Facepunch but just a few people. Like I said all I need help with is coding and stuff like that. [editline]2nd April 2011[/editline] I like the voting idea though. That's a lot better than mine
Coding is alot of work though. alot
Correct me if I'm wrong, from my understanding of what you're saying the shittyness comes from there being a lot of people, right? Thing is, the amount of shitty artists are related to how many who frequently visit deviantart. This also means that the amount of truly amazing artists on deviantart is also related to the amount of people who frequently visit deviantart. And like everywhere else, it is the people who are the dumbest/draw the shittiest that always scream for the most attention, which only makes it seem like there are more shitty people in relation to how many people there are.
No, what I'm saying is the shittyness comes from the community of 10 year old girls that's been establishes there. I'm hoping with a new site and the voting system you mentioned or something similar, it won't get to be where if there was a front page it wouldn't be dominated by crap ms paint drawings. I agree with what you said before, some people start with paint but the goal is to help them break away from that and improve their skills. The amount of people is no problem its that a majority of them happen to be camera whores or crap artists that think their excellent and show no signs of improving.
Still, where would you draw the line for shitty?
I've had a look through deviantart and the majority appears to be skilled artists, both those who use ms paint and those who use other mediums of expressing themselves. You seem bitter over deviantart, why is that? [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline]
Still, where would you draw the line for shitty?
I wonder this too, a majority of those who start out with drawing are bloody useless and makes you wonder if they even try, but they do and disregarding their art just because it isn't as good as your own is stupid. Everyone starts somewhere, most of them do start at the "jesus christ is this drawn by a sentinent human being or has someone just thrown random colours at the canvas?"-mark.
You seem bitter over deviantart, why is that?
hmm now why is that? let's take a look at the popular section foxes, furries, kawaii desune~ girls, objects with faces drawn on them, another strip from that arrogant piece of shit "comic artist" Tom Preston. it says a fair share about the site's community. sure, there are members like Adhonis and Algenpfleger but as Detlef stated earlier: you have to find them.
It's not so much the quality of the picture as opposes to I'd the artist is making an effort to improve. I don't give a damn I someones first few pictures are of their chibi OC as long as their whole gallery isn't filled with that crap and it doesn't continue lime that forever.
How bout this, ever heard of redbubble, it's an art website we could make a facepunch group on that and you can all do that, problem solved. I'll make a group now if you'd like.

A Redtube's facepunch version?
hmm now why is that? let's take a look at the popular section [img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13290261/deviant.png[/img_thumb] foxes, furries, kawaii desune~ girls, objects with faces drawn on them, another strip from that arrogant piece of shit "comic artist" Tom Preston. it says a fair share about the site's community. sure, there are members like Adhonis and Algenpfleger but as Detlef stated earlier: you have to find them.
Popular stuff has always been pretty shitty, as with everything in life you can't expect all the good stuff to be easily available for you.
conceptart.org
I guess this isn't going anywhere.
Rule of thumb, you need a alpha or beta version with an engineering ducoment to get anyone to join your group enthusiastically. If you can only pitch w/o doing any work, then the project will only progress so.
