Comcast founder Ralph Roberts has died. He was 95.
His death was announced Friday by the company.
Roberts, who also served as the company's chairman emeritus, founded Comcast when he bought a small cable system in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1963. From there, the company grew to the country's largest video, high-speed Internet and phone provider to residential customers.
Even though Comcast grew into a huge juggernaut of corporate wealth and power with a lot of anti-consumer practices, have to hand it to a guy who started small and created something that helps people get connected.
Hopefully the actual company dies, but I give credit to the man who built an empire.
Imagine seeing the project you created over 50 years ago explode into such a huge corporation. Regardless of what it has become now, that must fill you with an immense sense of achievement which will only be felt by a very small amount of people.
Wow. I can't imagine I myself could ever do such a thing. Well done on him, may he rest in peace.

Comcast might be not a very nice company to interact with, but if Comcast did go under, that would be a huge hit to the economy I think. They employ a lot of people and in some cases are the only infrastructure to a vast population.
If they got bought out, all that would do is bring more money to upper management, and probably would make things worse in order to raise profits and make the purchase worth it to the buyer.

It would also only further monopolize the telecom industry. Comcast existing is slightly better than Comcast ceasing to exist and consolidating the market.

They're supposed to be bringing 1 gbps here in a few years. I don't have them right now, but if it's in my area no matter how bad the service is I might just have to switch.

thats p much the whole reason i ever used them. they offered 50 mbps where i lived (for $110 a month, with a 300 gb/month limit lol) but the alternative was satelite. my connection would die 2-3 times a week, every week. i was insulted by tech support when i called them to ask why my net was dead again. my bill would go up in price for no reason every few months, which i had to fight every single time.
if you think you want to deal with all that for 1gbps go for it, but dont tell yourself the comcast hating bandwagon doesnt have at least a few valid points

I hope not, we're switching to it when our current contract runs out. :v:
We have 2 options; Comcast, or Frontier. And lately, Frontier has been slow, barely maintains connection sometimes, and completely drops it others. Comcast tries to fuck you at every corner, but at least their internet was quick and stable.

quick yes, but in my experience stable is the last word that comes to mind.

When I had them a couple years ago, they were pretty reliable. We paid $40 a month for good speed and almost never losing connectivity. It wasn't bad, they treat you terribly as a customer though. But you can't win when picking an ISP, you get bad service or bad treatment, maybe even both.
