EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.
Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.
Our source has also confirmed that the next Xbox’s recently rumoured specs are entirely accurate. That means an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, but Microsoft’s extended commitment to online delivery suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date.
Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.
Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.
The next-generation of consoles have gone halfway towards a disc-less, digital-only approach, says Eidos life president Ian Livingstone, hinting that the next Xbox will require internet connectivity and will feature watermarked discs that block used games.
I haven't even seen a 360 yet, why's everyone is such a hurry for releasing a new gen of consoles already?
I haven't even seen a 360 yet, why's everyone is such a hurry for releasing a new gen of consoles already?
Because current gen is really old
Just another of many that have made various and dubious claims. Honestly, I won't believe any of this until an official statement is made.
A new level of retarded DRM

Maybe because the old one is 8 years old?
I'm sure the guy was being sarcastic.
Soon windows 9 will require you to be always online too. Also you're not gonna be allowed to use the next generation microwave without hooking it up to the internet so it can download updates and post your latest meal to twitter.

It still plays the latest games though, isn't that enough?
I will admit though, I didn't realise the console itself was THAT old.

A farm, actually.
Always online? no used games? No purchase from me. Fuck off Microsoft.
Seriously though, they have to call it the Xbox³ whenever they officially announce it.
They aren't getting my money this time then
It still plays the latest games though, isn't that enough?
Not really. The xBox 360 is holding the ENTIRE industry back right now. Nobody making the big games that keep the gaming industry afloat is making games for anything else. Everything's written for the 360 first, then ported around, and if the 360 doesn't support it the industry doesn't support it.
That's why we're still seeing DX9 only PC games these days.
Oh look more anonymous sources, I couldn't give a fuck until at E3 their press conference starts and it's just like yeah so we're doing this, this, this and this.
Gotta love people believing this with no concrete sources.
Snip
Reminds me of that story a couple of weeks ago about the guy who created a fake leak and sent it out to a bunch of different gaming news sites. Guy was an asshole about the whole thing, but overall he did show what is wrong with gaming journalism.
EDGE might be a pretty reputable source, but they'd still post bullshit like this to get readers. Take it all with a big grain of salt.
One thing I'm wondering is, how will the next-gen console hardware stack up against gamer PC's? The specs of the PS3/360 were pretty generous in performance capacity for their price tag at the time of their release, will the same happen again or have things gone so far that consumers will be able to assemble similar-performing machines at acceptable cost?
If this is true then the balls is Sony's court. But who knows if that'll be any better.

PC's will still have a fair lead just by benefit of being upgradable and not having any kind of development time. But they'll still fair pretty well.
If this is true then the balls is Sony's court. But who knows if that'll be any better.
Considering many of the rumors have said pretty much the exact same stuff about the PS4, and I'm fairly sure Sony actually does have a wide range of patents on technologies to prevent the use of second-hand games, your chances aren't good if this is true. Be emphasis on IF.
Please do this Microsoft so someone else who doesn't charge money for online gaming and slaps ads everywhere becomes the market leader.
is this article satire
Well this seems less of an interest for me to get the new Xbox now that I have read this, but in the other hand I still need to read the official press for both Sony and Microsoft to make my final decision.
Looks like I'll be jumping over the fence to Sony if this appears to be true.
Unless the Nextbox will have free online I don't think I'll bother with it at all.
Despite rumors, at this point I wouldn't be surprised with the shit microsoft pulls.
And again, if that info about used games being a no-go, that would also mean I can't bring a game to a friend's house for local co-op unless I lug this console around.
