I just recently bought a Rebel T2i (550D) with a 50mm 1.8, and it was in absolute perfect condition right when I ordered it. After not too long, there was some dust in the sensor. Not too sure how it got there, I realized it was probably because of bad care when changing lenses. I went to my local camera store (Samy's) to buy a swab kit. Got home and tore it all open to try to fix it. I followed the instructions, but it was a cheap solution with bad quality swabs so it left streak marks and the dust was still there. Dirt appeared in my viewfinder and I realized I fucked up the mirror and focus plastic (not sure what it's called, the thing above the mirror).
I realized it was time to take it to a professional, because I couldn't do this. I brought it back to Samy's and asked to get it cleaned. My guy there who generally hooks me up with great deals told me that the main headquarters told him he couldn't provide free cleaning anymore, so I'd have to go talk to the repair man in the back. He told me my options were to send it to Canon and hope it was included in my warranty or he could get it done at the main headquarters for $35.
I called Canon that night to be told it was not covered and I'd need to most likely pay for it. I thought fuck it and drove down to the main headquarters nearby (20 minute drive). I went up to the second of 4 floors (Incredibly huge store...was like heaven) and talked to the repair guy in the back. Someone nearby was (planning on) buying a Hasselblad -- I figured this was the real deal.
I talk to the guy, he calls his friend and told him to do a free cleaning because I come off as polite, apparently. I happily stroll to this guy's office and meet Nick. He's the rental-repair guy. Now don't get me wrong, he's the nicest guy I've met at a store. He put hours of time away from his work into helping me get this fixed, and asked for nothing in return. He opened up the camera, swabbed away, and the sensor was spotless.
I tested it, all worked well. I pointed out what I saw in the viewfinder and he told me he'd handle it as well. I sit there for a while, while in the meantime he's disassembling my mirror and such to try to find the problem. Bad idea, everything seemed to fall out of the camera, didn't really seem intended. He fiddles with it, assembles it after another hour or so, and I hastily decide it probably was fine, thanked him, and left. He told me to just come by if I ever need a sensor cleaning, as he'd do it for free.
I get home and test it out. I look through the viewfinder and almost shit my pants. It's a fucking wreck. Part of the cage that holds the focus plastic in is hanging into the view, and there's scratches over the entire thing. At first I thought it was hairs, but under close light inspection I noticed there was no hair, it was fucking scratches. I try to swab it to get what I thought was hair off, and the entire goddamn thing falls apart. So now I'm stuck here with a non-functioning camera.
I called Samy's and spoke with Nick, he told me he'd organize the next time for us to meet up as soon as possible and he's really sorry. I feel so bad, this guy spent so long trying to do this and I don't want him to feel like shit -- he did exactly what I needed done; clean the sensor, and the entire camera fell apart :frown:
What do I do, facepunch? Am I stuck without a camera? It's obviously not covered under warranty, would Samy's reimburse me, considering it was just out of courtesy? Are they responsible?
Eat the remains, become camera man.
I came to this thread expecting some kind of story where you took a picture and saw a ghost.
I'm pretty sure they have to fix damage they inflicted.
Or can they just break your camera and say "Oops."

it's a pretty big dick move, instead of paying 35$ he chose the free version, and a guy fucked up his camera even though he should've chose the 35$.
it's kind of his fault for being a cheap ass, but life sucks.

I wasn't given an option, he told me it was on the house. He refused to accept payment.
this is why you don't cheap out on fixing things that cost a lot of money. it's thirty five dollars.

I'm not cheaping out...I was told he was doing it out of courtesy, they do these things for young photographers, because they know we'll keep going back.
I guess you could say your camera is a real Rebel

nonetheless, in the future you should return the camera to the manufacturer for repairs.
it sucks though dude, to have something that expensive break. i'd rage if my d7000 broke
If taking it back doesn't work, take it to the manufacture to get repaired, hopefully it won't cost too much
Provide pictures please?

I see what you did there.

Real rebels don't fall apart when getting cleaned.
