Five months after the adulterer-friendly dating website Ashley Madison was spectacularly hacked, it seems blackmailers are still trying to dig their claws into people who signed up to the site.
According to security blogger Graham Cluley, some former members of the site are now receiving blackmail demands through the post. The letters ask for thousands of dollars and threaten to out former members if the lucre is not forthcoming.
Ever since the database of Ashley Madison users was displayed online, blackmailers have been quick to try and extort money from members. The swift exposure of high-profile casualties, like former director of the Family Research Council Josh Duggar, who resigned in disgrace after being shown to have multiple accounts with the website, showed there was money to be made.
while i dont endorse it and extortion and blackmail is really, really wrong i am having trouble finding a whole lot of sympathy for a bunch of lying cheaters

Keep in mind though that there are some that did use AM to help find others to partake in the whole polygamy thing, so the scenarios where you and a partner are cool if you and they occasionally bang others from time to time would also be affected by said blackmailing campaigns.

wouldn't you think those people are in the really small minority though? those people would probably have alternatives like polygamistmingle.com or something.. this website was aimed to people specifically wanting to cheat on their spouse. not have an open relationship with other open relationships. polygamy is gross there i said it

most if not all of them were talking to a chatbot....
maybe not the best source, but

that's like saying you can't blame the pedos chris hansen caught because it wasn't ACTUALLY a 15 year old girl, it was chris hansen they were talking to
cept they thought it was

so you would endorse raiding someone and doxxing them because they did omething in poor taste.
so you would endorse raiding someone and doxxing them because they did omething in poor taste.
Not endorsing, just not caring. Please get the difference between the two.

It takes a special kind of person to read "I don't endorse this" as endorsing it.

A while ago I wrote on a personal website exactly why it's bad to claim they deserve it or to not have sympathy for anyone on the site. You can check it out here, but the bullet points of my argument:
- Cheating sucks, but context matters.
- You have to be able to prove that Ashley Madison users are cheaters.
- You can’t advocate against the Sony hack, the Fappening, or other leaks of private information and then judge others for being caught on Ashley Madison.

It takes a special kind of person to read "I don't endorse this" as endorsing it.
Why wouldn't anyone have sympathy for people even if they cheated( EVEN if they didn't actually cheat? )
I think its silly to not frown upon this sort of behavior.

I mean, I don't endorse it either, but if you do something really morally bankrupt you shouldn't be surprised or feel victimized if you get ousted. It's only "bad" because what they DID was bad.

can you show me the statistics that prove that a majority Ashley Madison users were cheating, or is this a baseless assumption based on how they marketed themselves?
how many people signed up out of curiosity, then forgot about it?
did a bit of research myself
[t]http://front.dadaviz.com/media/viz_images/18-million-cheating-males-are-seeking-females-1440071592.99-3555805.png[/t]
As you can see, a very large percentage of users are unattached males, so i guess they should just get swept up in all this too right?

I'd bet money that due to the disparity in male vs female profiles alone, that there were not nearly as many affairs or hookups to come out of that site as you think.
Why wouldn't anyone have sympathy for people even if they cheated( EVEN if they didn't actually cheat? )
Because they're cheating shitlords.

It's apparently not possible to frown upon the behavior of both the hackers and the site users, then?

think about it this way, it takes 2 people to cheat. some people enjoy enabling cheaters. those people are almost as bad as the cheaters themselves. they are fully aware they are signing up for a website where the point is TO CHEAT or at the very least enable cheaters. when they find some person to talk to on that site (or chatbot who cares thats irrelevant) they are trying to cheat or are looking for someone to enable their desire to cheat.
for example, imagine if there was a website where people go to anonymously commit insurance fraud. there'd be a box you check if you are the one with a car insurance policy and thered be a box if you want to be the guy whos gonna jump in front of the car. that's all your graph is showing me. "oh the guy who is gonna jump in front of the car doesnt deserve the same punishment"... doesnt he though? he has less to lose but hes still an asshole. you aren't blameless just by having less to lose.
just say you're uncomfortable with me and others being callous towards cheating assholes. i have never had a gf cheat on me but i've been "jokingly" accused of doing suspicious shit by my most recent ex who had trust issues. it fucking sucked and there was no cheating (to my knowledge) that had occurred by either of us. so, come back and say you still have sympathy for people who SIGNED UP FOR A CHEATING WEBSITE when you have shit like that or worse, actual cheating, happen to you.
and to say someone deserves sympathy because they only willingly signed up for a stupid website and didn't actually go through with cheating: that's ridiculous. i haven't signed up for any websites where you can find a hitman, child bride, cheating partner, or other sketchy shit because i am not interested in any of that.. even for "curiosity" reasons. if you dont hold people responsible for this, what WOULD you hold them responsible for?? again, i dont think they deserve this i just have little to no sympathy for them. how the fuck would you explain that to your friends/family if you start typing a website and "ashleymadison.com" comes up? "oh lol i was just curious" yeah... for all we know, the guy who made this website leaked the data himself as revenge because he got cheated on

you nailed it on the head; I don't have anything to add to your argument honestly.
I've experienced being cheated on by my best friend and it's absolutely one of the most emotion wrecking things that can happen. You can bet your ass I'd be uncomfortable if I found out my gf was "curious" to look at this site because it most likely only gets worse from there
(this isn't to advocate cheaters getting blackmailed, etc tho)

Cheating isn't illegal (unlike your examples). Not to mention, that's a personal issue to be sorted out between the couple, and not have asshole blackmailers involved with.
Even further than that the statistics of partnered people does not show what percentage are in open relationships and that sort of thing. Not to mention, you're completely ok with throwing ~14 milllion single people under the bus.
Get a grip dude, the fact they're being blackmailed over either A. A personal issue, or B. over nothing (ie they're in an open relationship or are single) is more than enough reason to give sympathies.
I always find it funny that most of the people here bitch and complain about private info being leaked and are totally against it. Then when this shows up it is ok somehow.
Who fucking cares if these people cheated? It is between the couples/parties involved. It isn't our business and does not need to be. Do i think cheating is shitty, yes. Do I think personal info deserves to be leaked? No. Do i think they should be blackmailed? No.
Cheating isn't a crime, it is a moral issue. Everyone has different morals, everyone cheats for different reasons, etc. Everyone should be afforded the equal protection against getting their PI leaked.
just say you're uncomfortable with me and others being callous towards cheating assholes.
Yeah, I thought that was pretty obvious? I'm not denying that I get uncomfortable with people being assholes in these kinds of situations, because that's how I actually feel. Is there something about it that makes it shameful or what?
while i dont endorse it and extortion and blackmail is really, really wrong i am having trouble finding a whole lot of sympathy for a bunch of lying cheaters
Open relationships and threesomes are a thing. It's not all about lying and cheating dude.

you don't have to be a "fan" of open relationships to realize that many, many people weren't using the site for cheating.

Who cares? Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you don't need to go saying "lulz 100% of the audience got what's coming to them"
There are better sites for threesomes and cuckhold shit though, that aren't marketed towards cheaters.

Look at the statistics I provided: nearly over 14 million of the accounts were by single people, and you can't really draw many conclusions about the attached indoviduals other then there sure has hell weren't as many hookups or anything just based on the disparity between male and female users alone.
And it's also not unreasonable to expect that not every single one of those attached individuals was cheating (if they ever even got that far).

wickedplayer494, who cares? Are you ready to impugn people based on chance - a chance in which you cannot verify the size?
is it seriously cheating to talk on a website though, like i pointed out, most of the "women" on the site were chatbots, so, that means that most of those attached men never hooked up with the women, so other than talking dirty to a stranger, there's not really anything going on there

No, I'm just presenting people that were arguing against Penguiin the thoughts he had already expressed earlier in the thread so he wouldn't need to repeat himself.

I don't think anyone using AM managed to cheat.
Literally only guys use these websites.
