Politico
Newt Gingrich has a take on how Donald Trump can keep from running afoul of U.S. ethics laws: Change the ethics laws. Trump is currently grappling with how to sufficiently disentangle himself from his multibillion-dollar business to avoid conflicts of interest with his incoming administration, and the president-elect has already pushed back a promised announcement of an ethics firewall. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House and one-time potential running mate for Trump, says Trump should push Congress for legislation that accounts for a billionaire businessman in the White House. “We’ve never seen this kind of wealth in the White House, and so traditional rules don’t work,” Gingrich said Monday during an appearance on NPR’s "The Diane Rehm Show" about the president-elect’s business interests. “We’re going to have to think up a whole new approach.” And should someone in the Trump administration cross the line, Gingrich has a potential answer for that too. “In the case of the president, he has a broad ability to organize the White House the way he wants to. He also has, frankly, the power of the pardon,” Gingrich said. “It’s a totally open power. He could simply say, ‘Look, I want them to be my advisers. I pardon them if anyone finds them to have behaved against the rules. Period. Technically, under the Constitution, he has that level of authority.”
The president is not a crook* *but only if you change the laws around him to make certain of that.
HOW ABOUT NO? Jesus fucking christ, Newt, no there damn well doesn't need to be a whole new approach. Plus you can't even prove his wealth since, y'know, he never released his taxes in defiance of tradition. Day by day, a 21st Century Fascist America becomes more and more possible and tangible. I hope people are ready for a revolution if need be. And I wonder how many Trump voters will risk their lives to protest when the time comes. I'm betting they'll decide they're too busy.
Welp, we're boned....
Fuck you, Gingrich.
"How do we deal with someone who is breaking rules?" "Change the rules."
It's just getting from bad to worse.
Jesus Fucking Christ, what even is this at this point?
They should change them, [sp]to make the ethics laws tougher and especially in cases similar to Trump.[/sp]
I like how everyone was insisting "the government is set up not to give the president too much power!" but people forget that the government can easily just change the laws to concentrate power as much as possible - and they're immediately doing that, just look at North Carolina.
Wellp we're a lot more low tech than all my sci-fi corporate dystopia tell me we should be, but I guess so long as we make a few more strides in body augmentation we'll be on track enough to make it semi-interesting.
The real problem for Trump isn't any simple ethical laws, but the emolument clause of the Constituion, which is violated whenever one of his hotels has a foreign diplomat using it. No amount of legislation, save a Constitutional Ammendment, could save Trump.
These are the same people that created the "terrorist fist bump" craze. These are the same people that criticized Obama for years for bowing to the Chinese president. These are the same people that are still, after two full terms of office, trying to prove that Obama wasn't born in the U.S. and shouldn't be recognized as a legitimate president. But no Trump just needs some breathing room to fully relax and get to work. We can't blow up all the time when just a simple blunder or two is made, even the best make mistakes guys.
They aren't even trying to hide their corruption anymore.
They aren't even trying to hide their corruption anymore.
Why hide it when you can legalize it? We did it with bribery, or should I say "campaign donations".
I do hope that Supreme Court does rule otherwise. But we can only pray that they imply the Constitution differently than what Gin-Grinch implies.
I do hope that Supreme Court does rule otherwise. But we can only pray that they imply the Constitution differently than what Gin-Grinch implies.
just you wait until donald trump puts another one of his billionaire fascist buddies on the supreme court
just you wait until donald trump puts another one of his billionaire fascist buddies on the supreme court
Again, we can only pray.
Every fucking day I wonder what we did to deserve this.
One hopes the Democrats use this against them to hold the liable for the millions of Climate Change deaths they're going to cause. Totally wouldn't be unethical at all, no sir re!

[editline]20th December 2016[/editline]
Every fucking day I wonder what we did to deserve this.
People thought they could get their blue collar jobs back, so they leapt for that chance.

No, let's not act according to ethics laws, that requires you to not be an untrustworthy, moronic cunt. Better just change them up so that you don't have to.
this guy really does have an appropriate name doesn't he
“It’s a totally open power. He could simply say, ‘Look, I want them to be my advisers. I pardon them if anyone finds them to have behaved against the rules. Period. Technically, under the Constitution, he has that level of authority.
That sounds kinda fucked up - something that could easily lead into sort of old boys network. ...Well, not saying that it isn't one already.
These next four years are really going to be a test for the American people. I don't know why people are still convinced that elections are just going to solve all of their problems when we get massive failures like the DNC.
You're literally asking us to legalize white collar crime.
please stop it with this childish melodrama, you're just embarrassing yourself
Every thread you show up in, you attack and flame people who are afraid or concerned, and never actually address their main point. Do you honestly find what Gingrich is proposing remotely acceptable?
Every thread you show up in, you attack and flame people who are afraid or concerned, and never actually address their main point. How about no? There are reasons why ethics laws are in place. You remove those and you run the risk of allowing a democratically-elected president overrule congress and the judicial system and take control indefinitely.
