It's arguably the biggest song of 2012, but the reign of "Gangnam Style" is coming to a close. Psy told MTV that he will be "ending" his smash hit tonight during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, capping a whirlwind year for the K-pop star, whose worldwide breakthrough came in the form of the signature pony dance in the "Gangnam Style" video. "Being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is already special – it's the biggest stage in the universe – plus it's my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of 'Gangnam Style,'" said Psy. "I mean, what better way to do it? It's my biggest and most meaningful birthday." Breaking Down Psy's 'Gangnam Style' While Psy doesn't plan on completely doing away with his most popular song, he's anxious to follow up the hit with another. "The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period," he said. "I'm really working hard on a new single right now, and I'm not saying ['Gangnam'] is ending on Dick Clark — I still have a lot of invitations to perform it . . . I'll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I've still got to do promo. So let me say that in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single." Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve airs tonight on ABC. "Gangnam Style" has become the most watched video on the Internet, racking up more than a billion views on YouTube alone. Psy is a really down to Earth person.
"I'm not going to let this shit burn out."
He's smart, but remember he's not just doing this for your sake. He is still another k-pop star that has been in the industry for years upon years and has a massive marketing company behind him informing his every decision. It'll be interesting to see how they proceed, for sure. I wouldn't say he is "down to earth" as so much as he is try to avoid the mistakes of the countless american pop groups with one hit wonders of the past.
Having a song become that popular is kind of scary...it would completely overshadow your old and new material. Just end up being "The guy who made Gangnam style".
What does that even mean?
It means he is going to stop marketing the song. ie he will stop making overt references to the song in publicity you will not see commercials featuring him referencing the song, playing the song, he won't appear anywhere playing only that song specifically, etc
That One Song Syndrome at play here. Everyone knows that one popular song from a band and absolutely nothing else. Like MC Hammer and his song U Can't Touch This.
About time.
"I'm not going to let this shit burn out."
Too late
That One Song Syndrome at play here. Everyone knows that one popular song from a band and absolutely nothing else. Like MC Hammer and his song U Can't Touch This.
it's called being a one hit wonder
I find it funny how the song takes the piss out of consumer culture yet the people listening to it are mostly rabid "happy consumers". Doesn't it say something about Soybean paste girls (doenjang girls), the girls who live on soy paste just so they can buy starbucks in south korea to look like they are "cool" and have good "status"?
That One Song Syndrome at play here. Everyone knows that one popular song from a band and absolutely nothing else. Like MC Hammer and his song U Can't Touch This.
Is that a 'trope'? Man, how that site has fucked up natural English sayings like 'one-hit-wonder'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_one-hit_wonders_in_the_United_States
it lists "I just had sex" by the lonely island as a one hit wonder? What about i'm on a boat and jizz in my pants? same with party rock anthem, what about Yes and sexy and I know it.

Lonely Island definitely has more than just "I Just Had Sex" (To be honest, I never heard of that one). Jizz in my Pants, I'm on a Boat, Like a Boss, On the Ground...
people that bitch about being one hit wonders are obnoxious at least they made ONE wonder which already something to be fuckin proud of (and cash in on) go make other things without saying UGH ENOUGH (insert highly profitable/popular song here)
Psy is a really down to Earth person.
Indeed, I was watching an interview with him on a TV show last night and he was saying how he is aware its a phenomenon and how all this fame could disappear over night.
Happy Birthday Psy
Good.

The song really never did appeal to me. I thought the video was a bit funny at moments, but on the whole it just wasn't my thing. Psy does seem like a cool guy though, and its his career so he can do whatever he wants.
it's just a summery pop song with an eye-catching video lyrics are pretty much irrelevant to any song, especially a viral one like this one [editline]31st December 2012[/editline] i'm just wondering why Swans didn't have the top song this year considering The Seer is 1000 times greater than Gangnam Style *objective facts*

TLI probably just had that one song make it to the list, even if a couple of their songs were also pretty popular.
Lonely Island is an All-hit wonder.
I don't blame him. He's honestly sick of doing the song. Have a nice birthday, Psy.

So really your question is dumb.
Because Swans aren't mainstream in anyway.
yeah they are, but not your kinda mainstream.
