Forty-five years ago today (July 20), humanity took a giant leap from its birthplace onto the surface of another world.
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong clambered down the ladder of the Apollo 11 lunar lander and pressed his boot into the moon's gray dirt — a simple if clunky step, witnessed by billions from afar, that stands as perhaps the most memorable moment in all of human history.
"The whole world stopped to watch what was taking place," space historian Roger Launius, assistant director of collections and curatorial affairs at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, told Space.com. "I think it would not be an overstatement to say that."
Now let's keep exploring the universe!
And to think there's people out there who still deny one of humanity's greatest achievements
poor bastards
I hope I'll be around when we finally go back and set up a Luna base.

Oops, it's too late. I already did it.
Yet for all its significance, ITV and the BBC destroyed or wiped most of the coverage over in Britain. Unbelievable.

The archive footage? What!?
Why?

I honestly don't know, with Doctor Who the reasoning was that it had no chance of being repeated. (Home media wouldn't start gaining ground until the next decade) Videotape was expensive from what I remember reading and so it was more economically viable to wipe the old contents and reuse it.
But the moon landings would of been something people would of been interested in seeing even decades later and surely anyone with an gram of common sense should of seen the value in keeping it.
I'm glad Neil was still alive to atleast see the 40th anniversary, but I'm sad he didn't live long enough to see us go back.
My father was born within just a few hour of the landing. And my great grandfather, his grand father, worked at NASA. So you know, thats kinda cool.

imagine achieving something like that then coming back and having people tell you "no you didn't actually do this"
This is also a nice "story" article about the landings:

The raw moon landing video is also lost, all the video of the moon landing we have today is from a TV camera pointing at a screen showing the raw footage. The original data was much much higher quality
imagine achieving something like that then coming back and having people tell you "no you didn't actually do this"
You don't even have to imagine that. This man is a hero, not only for the Americans, but for the whole world, humanity as a whole.
Bart Sibrel is an ignorant and disrespectful motherfucker.
imagine achieving something like that then coming back and having people tell you "no you didn't actually do this"
Not only that, but by 1970 the majority of americans couldn't even remember any of the astronauts names
My father was born within just a few hour of the landing. And my great grandfather, his grand father, worked at NASA. So you know, thats kinda cool.
Yeah, well my Mum was born 5 years before on July 20th, and her sister was born exactly 5 years later on the day of the landings.
Suck it.
An incredible feat that seems greatly under-appreciated.

They aren't too bad though
The worst are the people who think "Why go up there, there's nothing"

To the moon? I agree with your father then. We should be aiming to land in mars now. Leave the moon to the private sector, space tourism etc.
Don't forget that the moon landing was faked and the government hired Stanley Kubrick to direct it all. Weird Al is with me on this one.
Ground control to Major Tom...

probably was recorded on magnetic tape since it was broadcast live from NASA to them and magnetic tapes were very fragile back then, hell even the 90's tapes were not all that good
NASA's tapes got wiped out too after some time, luckally they had a camera filming the feed as it came in and that has stayed around much longer
now if only Congress would get off its ass and demand that NASA be given the opportunity to go back to the moon (maybe we can get the ESA and Chinese space agency to bankroll it, we got 6 seats now)

any mars mission will require significant advances in propulsion technology and space construction and importantly living on another planet, all things that can be test-bedded in LEO and Lunar Orbit

There aren't anything on the Moon, Mars, or anywhere in space other than Earth.
I live with and around people with that mentality

To make matters worse the Beeb was still wiping tapes well into the 80's.
I feel really dumb now, I had just assumed we'd been back to the moon since then, never realized we'd just went the one time, I mean christ it's been nearly half a century.

We landed men six times between the first and 1972

oh boy, your world will be rocked to know that we launched 6 more missions with 5 landing

You talk shit, you get hit
See there was credible enough evidence for people not to believe it happened but then nasa (and apparently the japs?) had satellite photo's of the landing site plus the rover.
I can understand people not believing previously but if you wanted to claim it didnt happen nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find something that couldnt be disproved.
