His voice changed a lot in almost 30 years and it's not due to age neither.
yeah it's due to him never learning how to scream/yell/shout/growl/whatever properly and destroying his vocal chords over the years.
Vulgar display of power he sounded the meanest, but the songs in reinventing the steel were heavier. Completely different now than from cowboys from hell for sure. The last few it seems like he's getting worse, irregardless a wicked singer with imo one of the most perfect voices for metal.

He had the gruffness plus the Halford like screeching from Power Metal. Psycho Holiday displayed it well.
They missed his best performance: his guest vocals on Van Full of Retards. Speaking of that, I wonder if we'll ever see a vocal progression of Seth Putnam video?
Phil is top teir Metal vox. Far Beyond Driven/GSTK is probably my favorite style. But if this is your video you should know you mixed up the album art for Vulgar Display/Far Beyond Driven. Also u forgot Superjoint.
I remember hearing a Down show on youtube from 2013 a while back, I almost cried. It start's from about 4:30

(I let out a scream) [editline]28th July 2015[/editline]
I remember hearing a Down show on youtube from 2013 a while back, I almost cried. Also that's one of my favorite songs.

Just makes me sad, that's it. I know, I know, it's the substance abuse, age, self-destructive vocal technique, but still - them tears be rolling.
Saw Phil Anselmo live last year, and I agree that is voice is nowhere near what it used to be. That man has not been good to himself. Drinking and smoking so many years due to chronic pain will do that to you. I could almost feel his inner daemons when I saw him on stage.
Phil is a strange character. Super cool dude, but whenever I see his interviews or anything other than him performing, I can't really tell if he's mentally impaired or just so chill that he seems to be high 24/7. Great career non-the-less.
yeah it's due to him never learning how to scream/yell/shout/growl/whatever properly and destroying his vocal chords over the years.
There is no proper way to scream
There is no proper way to scream
I'm pretty sure Phil just has a sick gravely old man voice and his growls seem just fine, but there is definitely a correct and incorrect way to do extreme Metal vox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_growl Using your 'false vocal chords/vocal fray' is the supposed correct way to avoid fucking up your vocal chords/developing polyps.
There is no proper way to scream
that is objectively not true. If you do extreme vocals from the gut with your vocal chords relaxed and your mouth and upper throat doing most of the work it's a proper way to scream. Now of course if you want to decide for yourself that there is no "proper way to scream" go for it, i get that it's not for everyone, but as someone who enjoys doing them myself, and someone who listens to a large variety of music, some with extreme vocal stylings, I think it's music, and I think it's awesome. It's expressive and it's a style.
