The Chinese sturgeon, thought to have existed for more than 140 million years, is now on the brink of extinction, according to local media.
Xinhua reported that no wild sturgeon reproduced naturally last year in the Yangtze river.
It was the first time since researchers began recording levels 32 years ago.
Chinese researches say the fall is due to rising levels of pollution in the Yangtze river and the construction of dozens of dams.
The fish they're talking about
They're quite beautiful. Sucks they have to now be artificially bred :\

Wow.
[editline]15th September 2014[/editline]
Sounds like they're at the point where extinction is certain.

Good thing we can breed them artificially, it's unlikely to happen in the near future, but it's always possible to see them return to the river if conditions improve.

It took actual scientific research to come to the conclusion that a country which still allows two stroke vehicles to be used as daily drivers by millions has polluted its river to the point fish can't properly fuck? Oi. Get your shit together, China.

shame that china seems to be screwing themselves up to the point of no return
Ancient Chinese secret

Pretty tough situation for the government to be fair, but at least they are trying somewhat.
I saw the picture and internally retorted: "Those are sharks, not fish!".
Some far corner of my brain whispered in concern for its safety: "But, but, sharks are fish...."
What an odd morning.

OMG bro, like there wasn't pollution in every developing country. Give them time, it will get better.

It is possible to industrialize without dumping your trash into a river and killing off the wildlife, such as using landfills. And there are other sources of power instead of building all of these dams, such as nuclear energy. Hell, china is already pushing for more nuclear energy.

You first disagree, then write how you actually agree with me.

They should have pushed for clean energy from the very start is what I meant, and I said that to point out that at the very least china is moving in the right direction, countries that are going to industrialize in the future should do it right from the start.

Sure, but it's not like building a nuclear power plant is an easy task. Maybe they lacked the engineering and technology to do it sooner.
A lot of the diverse Yangtze wildlife is dying off due to the dams that span the river now in addition to the pollution. We've already lost the Baiji river dolphin (the only whale species to go extinct in modern times and the then-only living member of it's family) due to their effects.
