http://games.on.net/article/13928/Always-On_DRM_Confirmed_for_S.T.A.L.K.E.R._2
GSC Game World studio head Sergey Grigorovich has revealed that the upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will require a permanent, uninterrupted internet connection to run. This pre-requisite will apparently go beyond mere verification – most of the game content will be hosted on the games server, and will be streamed out to end users as they play. As Grigorovich revealed in a recent interview, his company is going with this client/server model in order to fight the ever-present spectre of video game piracy:
Protection from piracy? Part of the content will be located on the server and downloaded as the game progresses. Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection. Software piracy is an issue for us, we try to fight it, but within reason. If people can not afford a licensed version, it is to our advantage if they download a pirated copy, and then want to buy a license. In Ukraine, there are different products that people love so much that they buy a license in principle. We want to create just such a product.

get out of here s.t.a.l.k.e.r.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *gasp* ooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! I hope Paravin isn't having a stroke.
So the crackers will save the files once downloaded, because if they have to be downloaded, then they have to be saved somewhere, and release them along with the crack Surely they aren't going to have hundreds and hundreds of megs of required game content you have to download each time you play
Um. I don't like that. I don't want to play a fucking cloud game. I want to play STALKER S PERIOD T PERIOD A PERIOD L PERIOD K PERIOD E PERIOD R PERIOD I don't want some game that looks like a medium texture thing if most of the games content is hosted on servers.
Well this is one drm i cant see people get around annytime fast. If this is what is needed to keep them alive and making more stalker games, so be it. Just to bad for the hassle its gonna be.
Wow, I'm not sure what to think
STALKER 2? Hasn't there already been three?
Lots of games have had this kind of DRM, and each one has been cracked eventually. I remember reading that reloaded cracked ubishit's drm on settler's 7 by just making it connect to a local server hosted on your client instead of the global thing.
It'll be cracked same as any other.
This is just stupid. My guess is that someone eventually cracks it anyway.
Wait Streaming Game content? So like Onlive? If it is, us aussies will be screwed over cause of our shitty connection here.
me no likey
Well they better not be graphical files, but if it isn't, how hard would it be to replicate them (a few config files wouldn't be hard to replicate, so it has to be something big)? Also they have to be saved somewhere, even if just partially and temporary. Oh and this means no modding on those files, which probably will be big. If they really do this, fuck them. Oh and pirates too*, gaming companies wouldn't spend millions of € every year to add draconian DRM if people had dignity (and anyone that says "but I'm not stealing the original! it's not theft!" is retarded). *Except for cases where the game can not be obtained otherwise.
And just when I thought you couldn't get worse than Ubisoft.
So you don't even have the full game? They have to give it to you or else? Wow, just...wow.
I bet the game will still get fully cracked after a week at most. It seems like most game companies don't realise that the people who crack games actually buy the games first and then get all the data from there.
hey guys you should probably read a bit better...
Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection.
So what if I don't have internet, I can't play the game I bought? I bought your last three titles dicks, at least you could ease up on the shit DRM.
I don't understand why publishers do this. Nothing kills my interest in a game faster than some kind of over the top, invasive DRM.
Instead of just whining on facepunch you guys could send e-mails to GSC Gameworld. I don't have a problem with it all because I ask myself, when am I not connected to the internet? Very rarely. Well, if this is true, I won't waste time buying it. Seems too much a hassle to play it.
I really think you guys are making a big deal out of nothing. No wonder developers turn over to consoles...
How will this effect mods?
What about people with slow connections or bandwith limits? this is just hurting their loyal customers, just like any other DRM.
I'm not too bothered though since I haven't gotten through all the stalker games I already own. And it will get cracked anyway.
The only type of DRM that is bad is the kind that wrecks your CD/DVD drivers which happened to me when I installed Silent Hunter 3 years back. Windows couldn't read CD's at all and I would blue screen.
No what the fuck Come on GSC I thought you were chill
lol i'll just play the first one again later skater~~
No what the fuck Come on GSC I thought you were chill
I think they will listen to the community if they get a lot of emails. Hopefully they'll just make it so if you buy a physical copy of stalker 2 you'll have to register it with steam or something like that.
most of the game content will be hosted on the games server, and will be streamed out to end users as they play.
Fantastic I sure bet their eastern european servers are going to be super reliable
