• London to use missiles to protect 2012 games after US claims they are "furious at lack of security"

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has told MPs that ground-to-air missiles will be deployed to protect the 2012 Olympic Games in London if deemed operationally necessary. The comments follow reports of concern in the United States about security plans for the Games. The Guardian claims the US were 'furious about security plans" and wanted to send up to 1,000 of their own people, including 500 FBI agents. However the Home Office says it has 'full confidence' in the plans. Mr Hammond was asked by his predecessor to confirm whether there would be a "full range of multilayered defence and deterrents" in place for the 2012 Games including surface-to-air missiles. He replied: "I can assure him that all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of the London Olympic Games will be taken including - if the advice of the military is that it is required - appropriate ground-to-air defences." The deployment of overseas security officers at the Olympics has become standard procedure in recent years but final responsibility for security rests with the host government. The Home Office say security planning is on track, funding has been protected, and the government is committed to delivering a safe and secure games. Officials also said they "don't recognise as true" that concerns have been expressed at an official level from the US side. The Guardian article says the London riots, the arrest of a security guard at the Olympic site and arrests before the visit of the Pope last year have raised US anxieties. The restriction of the scope of anti-terrorism stop-and-search powers was also claimed to be one of the reasons for concern. Responding to claims in the article, the games organisers Locog said precise numbers of security officers are only now being finalised because the venues themselves have only just been completed. Earlier this year National Olympic security co-ordinator Chris Allison said he believed 12,000 officers would be needed nationally to police the event. He said another 10,000-15,000 security officials could also be deployed by private security firm G4S. "The International Olympic Committee (IOC) undertake detailed inspections of security preparations and have full confidence in our plans. The UK has a strong and close working relationship with the US, who have expressed similar confidence." The US Embassy has declined to comment. The BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera said: "The US is understood to be taking a close interest in the plans and is intending to send over hundreds of personnel to protect its athletes." We really do like our extremes...
America: "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? WHERE'S THE GUNS? WHERE'S THE SECRET SERVICE? WE CAN'T HAVE THIS!" Britain: "Chill bitches, we got missiles"
stop ye bellyaching 'Merica
I think they're overdoing it out of spite.
Oh god, this is a way too hilariously stupid sentence to take.
What are they even fearing when they bring fucking MISSILES? Hot air balloons?
missiles + london = mass civilian death Sounds like a plan!
I think they're overdoing it out of spite.
Nothing new, Beijing did the same
What are they even fearing when they bring fucking MISSILES? Hot air balloons?
Planes? I mean its not like terrorists have ever used planes as weapons. Dunno how they would shoot down a plane over London, it would be way too deadly. Unless they would deploy them outside built up areas and threaten anything suspicious coming in. Would be a sight to see though, anti air missiles deployed on the streets of London. Well anything to keep the Americans from moaning I suppose.
We're furious. Look at my furrowed eyebrows >:[
Who would attack the fucking Olympic games with aircraft? [editline]14th November 2011[/editline] Not to mention that anybody who does would have to traverse several countries' airspace, I don't think they would get very far.
Who would attack the fucking Olympic games with aircraft?
Bat shit insane fundamentalists who think they are doing it for the greater good?
Bat shit insane fundamentalists who think they are doing it for the greater good?
Actually I just forgot about hijacking planes lol, I was thinking fighter jets and stuff
Actually I just forgot about hijacking planes lol, I was thinking fighter jets and stuff
That is a scary thought on its own. Anyone trying that wouldn't get within a thousand miles of the UK though. Unless it was the US or someone from the EU trying it.
I find this both hilarious and sad. What kind of world do we live in when Governments think it necessary to use missiles to protect sporting events?
Cant we just add ICBM's and Tanks as well to ensure total security?
We do love to take the piss
Cant we just add ICBM's and Tanks as well to ensure total security?
Pfft tactical nukes is where it's at
Think they've been planning on having a Type-45 destroyer parked in the Thames during the olympics for a while now.
Think they've been planning on having a Type-45 destroyer parked in the Thames during the olympics for a while now.
They should do this, just because they look awesome.
I'm highly disappointed in the BBC for not having a funny related picture :(
Nothing new, Beijing did the same
That's also when these guys arrived. London should fix soldiers on segways as well.
Its a joke, its a knock at US extremities with defense and over paranoia that terrorists will bomb them.
When I went on a world scouting event with more people from more different countries than the Olympics the security was an id card that they'd ask you to show every now and again.
Coming soon to the Daily Mail: Evil Asylum Seeker Funded Government Body Uses Fireworks as 2012 Defense Strategy, Invents the Term "Missiles" for them.
Hahaha What the fuck. Reminds me of north korea where they have fucking missile trucks errywhere at parades and shit
Drop a nuke on the games and we won't have to worry about defending it from terrorists. Oh wait..
