(CNN) -- Violence erupted in the Swiss city of Geneva Saturday as a scheduled peaceful protest of a World Trade Organization conference turned violent and police had to use tear gas and rubber bullets. Thirty-three arrests have been made and police were on the streets working to maintain order, authorities said. There was one minor injury reported: An 80-year-old woman in a walker suffered a head bruise when she fell during the tumult of the demonstrations. The demonstration started around 2:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. ET) and about 3,000 people turned up in the central part of town, Geneva police spokesman Patrick Puhl told CNN. World Trade Organization ministers will hold a conference next week. "There were three groups who came seeking violence," Puhl said. "The troublemakers quickly began attacking banks, hotels and shops, smashing windows and burning four cars, so we had to stop them using tear gas and rubber bullets," Puhl told CNN. The general theme for discussion at the conference is "The WTO, the Multilateral Trading System and the Current Global Economic Environment." Breaking into shops and burning cars is not a good way to get what you want.
What was an 80 year old on a walker doing at a protest?
Didn't their parents teach them that kicking and screaming would earn them nothing? :colbert:
Not very peaceful then.
What was an 80 year old on a walker doing at a protest?
the WTO planted her there!
It's things like this that make it hard for me to care when protesters take a baton to the face.
They should have known better.
This is why in Singapore, the APEC didn't suffer because we OUTLAWED street protest. Seriously, I think we should ban street protest
In the US, the right to protest is an unalienable human right. Go fuck yourself. :downs:
I wish I could go to a riot. Being loud, getting teargassed and shot at sounds fucking awesome :v:
But it's not. Tear gas makes your eyes and throat swell up. You can't breathe right, you're crying. You're trying to get out of the mass of panicking, aggressive people, but as soon as you reach the edge of the crowd you're being shot at with rubber bullets. They aim for the chest, which makes breathing all the more fun. You fall back into the mob, you better hope you don't trip, because getting trampled can be deadly. Then the riot police moves in. The most important thing is keeping your hands near your head, because that's where they're trying to hit you with their riot batons. Now you either run as fast as you can, or be dragged to the police station for the day. Actually being at the station isn't that bad, it's the being dragged that sucks. Most of the cops will give you a few good kicks or hits to the face.
Breaking into shops and burning cars is not a good way to get what you want.
When you want the stuff from the shops you are breaking in it actually is.
When you want the stuff from the shops you are breaking in it actually is.
Bullshit. I saw the video on youtube. They weren't doing anything. 50+ people are being slowly pushed back by an army of SWAT police with noise sticks and there's this retard in a blue shirt with a megaphone screaming shit about the NWO. Also, there was no teargas, or rubber bullets.
