Melee's intro can get anyone pumped.
I miss the hype of those days. Last game I was insane hype about was probably Halo 2 or 3. Maybe it's because digital distribution and not having to wait in the damn cold for a game.

I think it was a different kind of hype. Atleast for me.
Back then I was younger, didn't understand as many of the intricacies of games, engines, graphics, controls, etc. Back then, I legit was excited simply to play it. Now when I get a game I'm more concerned with mouse acceleration, custom controls, "does this only has Post-AA", proper sound mixing, etc. I kind of lost my ability to be excited for a game without being concerned with the way it feels or is rendered.
I think that's mostly my fault, though with the trend of bad ports since 05 or so, I feel I'm apprehensive to get this kind of reaction out of a new game unless it's from a developer I know is doing it right. Like Valve and Dice. For Nintendo, I know I'll have fun with their newer games, but they feel like they lack character or spirit like their old ones did. The last E3/expo where we saw Last of Us, Watchdogs, etc was a turning point since those games really felt like it was something to be excited for. Didn't feel like a sequel or another rehash of an older title, but something new.
I will agree, that the very transparency of game releases now make them less explosive. Since you simply hit a couple buttons, wait, and play. Heading to the store to wait in line and get a copy was what built the suspense and anticipation of running home and putting it in your N64 or Xbox.
Edit: The hype change is similar to movies for me now. I know a lot about the production and the tropes with trailers and such so when I go to a brand new movies it's more like, "Well this was an impressively produced film" Rather than, "DUDE DID YOU SEE THAT" like I would when I was younger. Part of it might be due to the lack of really blockbuster themes and connections. I think of starwars, I think if a new starwars like the original trilogy was announced I would go batshit crazy because it has a very very strong image with it. Halo had the same thing. But Halo3 sort of... dulled it somehow, not sure, but H3 felt just... more not something really better or expansive. And then we had OGST and reach. Both were great, but just felt like, "Oh here's another one."
That's me though. I find it interesting.

I'm getting the feeling for Halo 4 but I don't feel the same for other games.
