Spending a few months in Las Vegas and Newport Beach. What to do?
29 replies, posted
So my uncle invited me over to stay with him the United States for a while during spring/summer. I've been working since I graduated last year and I have some money so I decided that would be a cool thing to do. I'm going to be staying partially in Las Vegas at his house, and also in Newport Beach, California with some other acquaintances.
My question is, what is there to do for someone who's 19 in those parts of America (I'm swedish so I'm otherwise used to being able to go to bars etc.)? Surely a lot of you are from that area. Any tips welcome!
Also if you're really close by, maybe we could meet up or something?? I'm cool. I play the accordion. Peace.

I remember when I went to Las Vegas and staying at the MGM and Venetian. shit was pretty fancy
I'm actually going to Vegas in August before my student visa ends with some friends so I've been looking into some stuff. A tip I found to save a heap of money is to actually come to Vegas on Sunday, and leave by Friday evening. Hotels crank up the charges on Friday and Saturday night's because that's when there's the most visitors. Even on weekdays during the summer it'll be crazy busy, but it won't be as expensive. Also make sure to keep your passport or a copy of it with you. American's will only except them as I.D. for foreigners.
Vegas is amazing, even if you're slightly under 18 or 21. When I went to Vegas I was only 16 and I still managed to have fun.

You should also go see the Blue Man Group
Alright! I'll definetly go see some shows! Feels a bit meh to do it alone though but whatever. I'm thinking about driving to some national park too like Valley Of Fire or Red Rock Canyon. Thanks for the suggestions!

I live relatively close to Newport Beach. Here's some do's and don't's
Do:
- Go to Ruby's on the pier (burger joint that looks like it never got out of the 50's. It's expensive but very good kind of like In-N-Out) and ask to sit outside or sit closest to the windows so you have a view of the open ocean, it's amazing.
- Go to the "fun fair" (whatever the hell it's called) it's located behind the pier a bit aways. There's some interesting shops and what not and some good food (mostly carnival stuff but it's good (but expensive))
- If you're planning on going to the beach either go in the morning or early evening. Reason being that if you do you'll get a whole bunch of fucking tourists, most of which don't speak english, and a crowd of bums asking you for change. If you bring anything valuable with you you better make sure it isn't in plain sight because you CAN and probably WILL get it stolen.
- Depending on the time of year you go, you can pay like $45 to take a tour of Newport Harbor. It's pretty interesting as they go by and tell you which houses are owned by certain celebrities or history of the area. If you're lucky when you head out of the harbor and go around the big buoy back to the dock there's usually 3-4 California Sea Lions or a couple of seals chilling out on top of it and the boat goes pretty close to them
Dont:
- go to the richer parts of the town (ie the Lamborghini dealership) and try to be one of the cool kids that tries to ask if they can take one for a test drive and act like you're the shit. The dealers have no qualms about telling you to fuck off and if you're a tourist to fuck off back to your own state/country
- Avoid the inner city if possible. You mainly want to stay near the beach area and the pier.
- Please, please, please, please, PLEASE don't go to the public beach. There's a state beached called Crystal Cove a few miles away that is so much better and isn't full of bratty teenagers and annoying as fuck tourists. It's a very beautiful place and if you've got some diving/snorkeling gear, there's a little kelp forest right off the beach area where I've seen a lot of dolphin, rock fish, and otters swimming around. If you're lucky, you could possibly see a Gray Whale or even a Blue but that's entirely depending on the time of year you go.
p. much it. Also, you won't be going into any bars as you're only 19. If you get bored of Newport you can head up the coast into Huntington Beach and Santa Monica. They're pretty nice areas with alot of things to do and a lot of places to go. Another state beach I'd recommend is Bolsa Chica. It's past Huntington Beach a ways and it's usually very quiet and serene.
Also if you're interested in making a few bucks bring your accordion, bring a bucket or something, and play near the pier. Locals in this town usually love outlandish shit such as some Swedish guy standing on the corner playing the accordion. Avoid areas with a lot of police presence though because down here you need a license (bullshit) to "busk" (basically street perform) but a lot of people seem to get away with it.

Thanks a lot my friend! Very useful info. Much appreciated.
Trace over all the locations of Fallout:New Vegas and tell us how accurate the game is to them.
I live in Vegas and am under 21 so I've been living with your problem of finding things to do here for a while. You'll probably have more fun in Newport, but I've never been. I'm sure Newport has a ton more things to do in a much smaller area.
The best thing to do here is wander around the strip. Try to avoid the middle of the day, it's getting hot. This is *this* spring/summer, right? It will be cloudless and hot, like it is every day of the summer. It's a very dry heat. Stay out of it as much as possible and drink water if you're going to try to wander the strip during the day.
The Bellagio is probably the nicest. I think it usually has something pretty cool in the lobby area. Maybe that was the Venetian. The Venetian gondola area is pretty trippy, I kept forgetting that I wasn't actually outside. So if you're going to choose a few casinos to actually go into, make sure to see those two. Skip the Luxor and the Excalibur. Gross. If you aren't a pussy, do the rides on top of the Stratosphere. The strip is very mind-blowing the first time you see it, it's hard to believe that everything is real. But since you're 19, a lot of fun stuff is off limits.
I'm not sure how long you're going to be in Vegas, but if it's for any amount of time you're going to desperately want to find something to do that isn't strip related. There's really nothing much unique. Vegas is a one trick pony, I suppose. Here are some places that we take visitors once they've seen the strip:
Shows. Somebody already mentioned seeing Penn and Teller, and Blue Man Group. They're great. You could see some other shows but I don't have much experience with them.
We usually drive people to the Hoover Dam. It's very close to Vegas. Definitely worth seeing.
The Mob Museum is neat. Vegas has a very interesting history.
You could go to the "Pinball Hall of Fame". It's a dirty warehouse full of a couple hundred pinball machines. It's pretty great if you have any interest at all in them. I hesitated to put on the list, but it's a cool place and there's not many unique places like it in Vegas. Do this if you're stuck in Vegas for a while :v
You'll get to see more empty desert then you'll ever want if you're driving out of Vegas, which will be cool for a bit and then mind-numbingly boring for the remaining couple of hours. If you have actually played New Vegas: you'll probably drive through Primm on your way to Newport. Spoiler, it's as shit in real life as it is in the game. It's for people from California that want to gamble but don't want to drive all the way to Vegas. Still, it was interesting to see it in real life after playing the game. I've also been to Goodsprings.
Too bad you're coming here in the summer. There's a ton of really cool hiking and rock climbing around, and the desert has actually grown on me. Backpacking in the desert is so different from places with trees. There's no real paths. You just pick a route to go and start walking. It really is a lot like walking between locations in Fallout NV. You can see for miles. It's just way, way too hot to do any of that in the summer. Walking through the Mojave will make you wish for nuclear winter.
Basically my advice is to get out of Vegas asap. That's my plan anyway

In Primm, there's actually a casino called Buffalo Bill's with a rollercoaster going around it. I thought that was cool. There's another one that I think the other casino in Primm was based off of that displays Bonnie and Clyde's car.
Goodsprings is as much of a shitty middle-of-nowhere town in real life as it is in the game, it's just that there's a more sad looking trailers and rednecks. The saloon is reproduced fairly closely. I think there's actually a schoolhouse...
As far as the general landscape: the area around Las Vegas is actually just brownish gravel/dirt covered in small bushes and the occasional cactus. I saw a patch that added more grass under the guise of "realism". Bullshit.
The highways are all real, it was really cool playing the game and knowing how to generally get around.

I'm from Newport Beach. In addition to Kai-ryuu mentioned, hit up the hookah lounges if you're into that, they're pretty chill. Also there are two pretty big malls nearby, Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza if you want to go shopping there. Right by South Coast Plaza there are two fairly small places called The Lab and The Camp, an "anti-mall". Hipster central, but the restaurants there actually really good.
I've been to Vegas, you can't really do a whole lot unless you're 21.
I'm flying back for summer in a few weeks, gonna be there until mid-August. I'd be down to meet up at some point. PM me or add me on Facebook or something and we can work out the details.

Well she might get high and you don't want that.
You don't want her to end up getting coke dick.
Theres a hotel called the MGM Grand, theres the best arcade I've ever been in inside the hotel. It's been a decade since I've been there so who knows if it's still there or if it's any good anymore. It should still be worth checking out if you like arcades.
Las Vegas. This.

Kill either Benny or Matthew Perry because they shot you in the head and left you rot in geewdspreengs.
But in all seriousness, mosey your ass over to World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop and try to sell your great-grandpa's piss-stained WW1 combat helmet.
Then wait as Rick Harrison calls his buddy who specializes in piss-stained WW1-era helmets. After that, barter for like hours until you manage to sell it for a quarter and a gumball.
Or, alternatively, get piss-drunk and lose all your possessions.
Drink, gamble and fuck hookers.

Pretty sure you gotta be 21 to gamble in Vegas.
Ignore the casinos and night clubs and just stay in your hotel room masturbating
