Amanda Clayton hit it big playing the Michigan Lottery. Like many winners, she used her $1 million prize to buy a new house. But the Lincoln Park, Michigan, resident continued to receive money in another form -- $200 a month in state food assistance, according to CNN Detroit affiliate WDIV. Her story made headlines, and on Thursday, the state's Department of Human Services announced that she is no longer getting the benefits. According to Michigan law, welfare recipients must report any changes in assets or income to the agency within 10 days. The department "relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status. If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits," Director Maura Corrigan said in a statement. She said the agency supports new legislation that would verify whether lottery winners receive state benefits. "I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I thought, maybe, it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, 24, told WDIV when it asked whether it was appropriate for her to receive the money. A state lawmaker is trying to stop such assistance, which is not illegal. He says the food assistance should not go to those who have found riches through the lottery. "We need to continue to protect our taxpayers' dollars ... and taxpayer dollars should be going to those who really do need assistance," Michigan Rep. Dale Zorn of Ida Township told HLN's Vinnie Politan on Wednesday. In October, Clayton walked away with $1 million in the "Make Me Rich!" lottery game show. She also bought a car, WDIV reported. After taking a lump sum and paying taxes, the unemployed woman said she ended up with just more than $500,000. Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses." Zorn said the state House has passed bills on the matter. One would require a state agency to conduct an assets test if a citizen wins more than $1,000 in lottery earnings. "That will trigger whether or not the people are eligible to receive public assistance." The legislature has not approved any final measures. Clayton told WDIV she had wanted to continue using a food-assistance card until it is cut off. "It's hard. I am struggling."
Why would she continue to want to receive food stamps if she won the fucking lottery? What a joke. This person just won over $500,000 and she thinks she is entitled to continue to receive benefits? That money is more than enough to get an education or invest to receive interest. I bet if she was smart, she could put that money into an account that earns just as much, if not more interest than she is currently making in a year. Even at a conservative 5% return, that's still $25k a year. People like this ruin the culture of public assistance programs because it reflects on all of those who receive public assitance. Helping your fellow man through a little of your taxes isn't wrong, but taking more than you need IS wrong. This chick needs to get a job.
I can't stand losers like her.
Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
"i bought a second house with my lottery money so now i need taxpayer dollars to pay my bills" :downs:
Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
Shouldn't have bought another house then you stupid, greedy whore.
An example of how some people massively fuck up when they win the lottery
Shouldn't have bought another house then you stupid, greedy whore.
She may be stupid and greedy but how does that make her a whore
It must be a hard life. Some people I know don't have a house, most people I know only have one. She has to deal with the burden of having two houses.
What a fucking skanky woman I'm sorry but it's just sad that there's a large number of people on welfare that exploit the system. Even when given the opportunity through wealth to change her life around, she refuses and instead just buys a bunch of shit that will do nothing to improve her actual financial situation. Why? Because HEYOOOO FREE MONEY!! This is all going to be very bad for this woman when she suddenly within a few years finds herself bankrupt again, either from not being able to pay the house bills or just flat out still not working/contributing/being lazy/etc. Suddenly all her stuff gets repossesed, codemmned, and she's forced to live on the streets. It's sad.
More importantly, if she can't afford to buy food with her own income, why is she buying lottery tickets?
I'm sorry but it's just sad that there's a large number of people on welfare that exploit the system.
Hold on now, do you have anything to back up this claim of 'large number'? In unemployment insurance for example, the rate of fraud was about 2% and frankly I can't expect welfare to be too different, so what do you have to support your claim of 'a large number of people on welfare exploit the system'?
She's stupid for demanding assistance after getting rich.
People are always surprised at how fast their lottery winnings dwindle away.
She's stupid for demanding assistance after getting rich.
I don't think she demanded assistance after getting rich. She was already given welfare before that. She just didn't notify them that she won a million dollars.
"It's hard. I am struggling."
Struggling with what? There's no way in fucking hell she already spent $500,000 on just a car and house unless you bought a mansion and two rolls royce's. $500k can go a long way even if you're a bit irresponsible with money.

She doesn't know her head from her ass.

Many of the people there follow this similar mindset and I work with someone who used to be a drug dealer who delt with welfare clientele all the time. He'd tell me, "Why work/report your income when you could get food stamps?". A chunk of the people he knew would do jsut that - work for landscaping companies under the table, avoid tax and get foodstamps/welfare checks in the process. Other people would just flat out not work, and exploit loopholes to get the biggest checks they could (i.e. saying they have a big family). It happens ALL the time. The problem with offical rates for fraud are that they are NEVER accurate, because who in their right mind would report "YEP I DO FRAUD"? That figure only comes from people who have fucked up and done soemthing stupid to get them audited, and then they get found out they've been doing fraud.
Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
Sorry but I just couldn't resist using this, it's just so appropriate.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day..
Win 1 mil. Get taxed half. Hahahahahahahahahahhah. Shit.
Because people know how to wisely use their money after having $500 000 thrown at them. String her up. Also she's a greedy, skanky whore because I said so and I'm a misogynist. happy International Women's Day folks
She's a fucking lazy ass welfare baby.
And you're a belligerent ass cranky prick. calm down
"I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."
Some people don't deserve money, they can't handle it. She gets goes from poor to rich and already she's overcome by selfishness and greed? If I won $1m, I'd buy myself a trailer or small house, preferably in the countryside, a car that runs, and just live off my savings in peace.

She would have kept getting benefits if she hadn't shown up on the news.
She's a lazy ass welfare baby. She doesn't know her head from her ass.
Yeah really raking it in there with those food stamps. Shut the fuck up. Between her and you I guarantee you that you do infinitely more damage to the United States. Hands down. No fucking contest.
What really fucks over most lottery winners are when they do something stupid with the money that they cant afford in the long run. But this woman is stupid for blowing her money.
