• Christmas Trees Not Allowed on Government Property in Nazareth, Israel
The mayor of a suburb of Nazareth sparked outrage after he refused to allow Christmas trees to be placed in town squares, calling them "provocative". Upper Nazareth is a predominantly Jewish suburb of the town where Jesus is believed to have spent much of his life. It has a sizable Christian minority, as does mostly Muslim Nazareth itself. "The request of the Arabs to put Christmas trees in the squares in the Arab quarter of Nazareth Illit is provocative," Mayor Shimon Gapso repotedly said. "Nazareth Illit is a Jewish city and it will not happen -- not this year and not next year, so long as I am a mayor," he said. His decision has angered the town's Christian minority, who accused him of racism. "The racism of not putting a tree up is nothing compared to the real racism that we experience here," said Aziz Dahdal, a 35-year-old Christian resident of Nazareth Illit. "When we asked the mayor to put up a Christmas tree in the Arab neighborhoods of Nazareth Illit he said this is a Jewish town, not a mixed town," said Shukri Awawdeh, a Muslim Arab member of the town council. Awawdeh said there were 10,000 Arabs, most of them Christian in the town and there was also a large community of Christian Russian immigrants. "We told him that decorating a tree is just to share the happiness and cheer with other people in the town," said Awawdeh. "People here, Jews, Christians and Muslims live in harmony, but when the mayor does something like that, it does not make things better."
http://www.internationalpeaceandconflict.org/forum/topics/christmas-trees-banned-in?xg_source=activity Wow, are they actually trying to piss everyone off?
why must we humans be the way we are
Oh wait.. that's where I live in. Oh hai. This Shimon Gafso guy is retarded.
Silly Muslim mayor.
He's Jewish, read the article.
He's Jewish, read the article.
I confused Nazereth with Nazereth Illit, because Nazereth Illit is no suburb of Nazereth, but a seperate town.
The mayor should get overthrown, shit like this is unacceptable
Evergreens don't belong in the desert anyways.
Evergreens don't belong in the desert anyways.
Should I take a picture of the view I have of my house?
Evergreens don't belong in the desert anyways.
You seem to think any Arabic speaking country is just desert? Palestine/Israel have forests, mountain ranges, etc. And even then, if Qatar - who have a moderately small Christian population - put up Christmas trees (Obviously fake ones) all over Doha (Capital city) and decorate EVERYTHING with Christmas then at least a place with more history and more expected tolerance towards Christians would allow it. It's pretty obvious here the mayor is talking shit just because the Christians are Arabs.
The mayor should get overthrown, shit like this is unacceptable
I doubt Arabs would ever manage to participate in any elections/democracy within Israel. Hopefully they'll just find a more tolerable Israeli/Jewish candidate.
Actually a lot of the Christians here are Russian.
I'm talking about the majority here. The quote in the article that HE said himself: "The request of the Arabs to put Christmas trees in the squares in the Arab quarter of Nazareth Illit is provocative,"
It's not really a big majority against it either, just the idiotic mayor. Fucking inconsiderate mayor.
It's not really a big majority against it either, just the idiotic mayor. Fucking inconsiderate mayor.
Inconsiderate politicians? How could that be?
No dude. I'm pretty sure the middle east is just desert. I've seen National Geographic.
If you're joking, then hahahahaha. If you're not, I live here and there's a lot of desert around the Persian Gulf region (Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Oman) but outside of that there's a whole lot of green (Palestine/Israel, Lebanon, Tunisia, etc.)
I'm talking about the majority here. The quote in the article that HE said himself: "The request of the Arabs to put Christmas trees in the squares in the Arab quarter of Nazareth Illit is provocative,"
Because the Arab consul members are the one who asked for it.. hence, what he said. There is no Arab quarter in here either.
His words, I'm just assuming it's some kind of act of defiance against Arabs. Though not a huge example, Israel is constantly pulling shit like this. I'm a Jordanian citizen (Though I live in Qatar), but thats because my grandparents ran away to Jordan when the occupation started (Palestine -> Israel). I'm not even allowed to fucking go back, because they know theres a high Palestinian population within Jordan and so because I don't have an American, European, Canadian, Australian etc. passport who can get through easy, they see I have a Jordanian and I have to sit through several hours of questioning and searching; to go to the West Bank which is supposedly an independent Palestinian territory. I can't even go back home, because I'm Arab, and that's just bullshit. /rant, sorry to ramble a bit, it's just kind of bothering me that I wanted to go back this Christmas.
Upper Nazareth and Nazareth are two separate towns as ohadje said. We have those "X, upper X" all over Israel, usually the "upper X" is like a new town named after the old one and the two are very close, and the new one is populated mainly by Jews, mostly religious Jews. My cousins for example live in Upper Beitar, near Jerusalem. The town is full of religious Jews, not a single one is non-religious. If there really is a Christian minority in Upper Nazareth then I don't see why the mayor can't allow a Christmas tree in their part of town. I mean Jews in the US happily celebrate Hannukah together with Christians celebrating Christmas, why can't the Jews in Upper Nazareth be as tolerate?

now there are giant candles instead of trees

Uber-Christians in the US wouldn't put a Menorah in their town so Jews wouldn't do that either. I think the US is even worse on these issues because they don't allow any religious things on Government or Public ground at all.

nazareth is a p. badass name
Arabs celebrate Christmas?
There are plenty of Christian Arabs, especially in Nazareth, Jerusalem, and other cities that are important to Christianity in Israel.

not content with just murdering Our Lord.....
Christmas trees are not christian, look it up

Good, any religious over-statement should be banned.
