A Melbourne woman made two desperate phone calls to emergency services moments before she was murdered but the operator did not pass her message on to police because she couldn't get her precise address.
Penelope Pratt, 27, was shot three times after she was involved in an argument over a $160 debt in Fern Tree Gully in Melbourne's east on November 28 last year the Herald Sun reports.
James John Potter, 24, was committed to stand trial for her murder on Friday, along with another man who has not been identified.
The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard that Ms Potter sounded desperate and erratic when she called Triple-0 just before midnight, telling the operator three men were after her.
"I'm in the vicinity of being heard, do you understand what that means? &mdash I'm hiding in a bush answering your questions!" she can be heard saying. The operator at one point said:"If I can't hear you, how am I to help you?"
Ms Potter gave the operator her name and mobile phone number but the information was not passed on.
Her body was found dumped in the nearby suburb of Olinda on December 19.
Seriously?
This is why it must be made sure everyone understands to first state your current location, or the closest possible approximation when calling an emergency number. Still, the operator should have relayed all the information directly to the police, so they could at least check her home/parents and whatnot.
Also. The murderer was James Potter?

Holy shit it's Harry Potter's dad
But seriously, that operator's a fucking moron. Hope she feels terrible about the fact that she let a young woman die because she decided not to pass her information over to the police.
now thats just horrible.
Seriously?
People get murdered over far more trivial things. It's a terrible thing. :(
Why don't the operators get the at least approximate location from the cellphone network?
Unlike significant amount of techniques which criminalists in TV shows use, this is a valid technical functionality of the cellphone network, but unlike in TV shows, works nearly instantenously, and gives at least approximate location of the cellphone. They could at least send a patrol into the area and see if they couldn't find her.
That's why if I were to ever call emergency services, the first thing I would tell them is my location.
Protip, if you can, use your cellphone.
But if i were to call the cops, and not give them my adress, they's still come to my house because of my phone number. They know where it's coming from. I can even search houses by phone numer on the internet.
I guess she was too late calling the cops. It's easy to blame the operator, but i don't think anything could've been done.
Makes me wonder though, if they were collecting 160 dollar, how much were the 3 guys paid for killing here..
How is the legal situation of GPS tracking mobile devices in America? A friend of mine had his mobile stolen, went to the police and they just tracked the theif down by the end of the day. I've heard that there are legal reasons thatkeep police from using this in an Immergency
Avada kedavra!

I'd rather have chip implanted in me rather than being kidnapped or in trouble.
like you would call the police and give them your bar code and they would know where you are.
It's not like I care If the govt sees Im at my home every day

Reminds me of a kid who wanted to find me and "beat me up" because I owed him 20$ after 3 months when I already paid him through someone else. He was such an idiot and scum. People go to ridiculous measures for the smallest amount of cash.

You brain is weird.

Yeah, like that man who got burned alive for stealing a sack of potatoes.
I'm pretty sure they can trace the calls, can't they? That's how they find people who dial 911 but can't speak for various reasons.
Australia's emergency service is really shitty. I once dialed 000 for an ambulance since I was near the scene of a car crash(I didn't see it but I did hear it and turned around and saw the end of it). I got asked two or three times to confirm the location I was at. :(
in America if you dial 911, even if you don't say anything, a cop appears at your door within 5 minutes, give or take
in America if you dial 911, even if you don't say anything, a cop appears at your door within 5 minutes, give or take
Maybe not 5. But 30 minutes or less.
"I'm in the vicinity of being heard, do you understand what that means? &mdash I'm hiding in a bush answering your questions!" she can be heard saying. The operator at one point said:"If I can't hear you, how am I to help you?"
Dumbest operator ever. "Durr speak louder so they can hear you." How bout turn your headset up dumbass. Or better yet, assume the worst and do your job!
I thought in most parts of the world, if you call emergency services and don't say anything they send someone over anyway. Obviously you get fined if nothing is wrong but it's done good to save people who have attempted to call for help while having strokes/seizures/etc.

This sounds good at first but can you trust politicians ultimate control?

The muggle woman learned his secret.
If they don't come in 30 minutes, you get killed for free!
30 minutes or less, or the criminal's death is "accidental"!
Fixed.

I once got attacked by some nutter with a knife because I bought the last red bull in the store :v:
Can't complain though, a case of redbull, and a free knife.
