This is breaking right now on Turkish news and twitter, no big sites have picked it up yet. Nobody knows what's going on but the military has shut down Ankara, and jets are flying low over highways.

If the military is displaying a show of force that probably means that they probably failed to capture Erdogan & co. and are trying to have them submit.
So far the only that has been said that it was an attempt by a faction within the military but the reports indicate that they have failed.
god damn I want off 2016's wild ride
Ankara has called all national police forces to come in and theta word of martial law being imposed.

Friend in Turkey is telling me that more cities are starting to report military movement
Erdogan needs to go, but I have a feeling this is going to end pretty badly because he does have a pretty large support base.
Anyone got a livestream of turkish media? This is exciting as hell!
Oh man, stay safe Turkish people. Glad I got into the thread in the first couple minutes.

Where are you right now? Do you see any military forces nearby?
Also I'd guess that loyalists to Erdogan would want to spread the word that a potential coup would fail, to remain strong and all.
Whenever these coups happen whoever tends to take their place is usually the same or worse. Hopefully this doesn't descend into civil war.
Hopefully this is a secular coup, Turkey's gone to shit when it became more religious.
Unconfirmed reports of gunfire and explosions in Ankara. The PM just went on TV:
"Good evening to our nation. Unfortunately, a few hours ago, starting with Istanbul and Ankara, traffic has been blockaded and a few buildings have been surrounded by a group. Our security personnel will intervene right away. We will not let anyone ignore the will of the people, and make them pay for it. The Republic of Turkey's chosen government is at work, and we will preserve independence and democracy. Those who turned their weaponry and tools, paid by the people, against the people, will be punished in the harshest way possible"

This isn't the first coup in Turkey.
This isn't the first coup in Turkey.
I know that. And they have never descended into civil war. With how unstable the region is and how much support Erdogan has, especially from Islamists, it's natural to fear the worst though.
