The victorious South Australian premier has announced that former backbencher John Rau will replace Michael Atkinson as Attorney-General of the state.
Chris Pryor of the Games4Croydon party said last night via Twitter that the long-serving Rau is "a supporter of the R18+ classification for games (and a nice guy to boot)".
Pryor blogged on Monday that "seeing the role of Attorney-General filled by someone other than Mr Atkinson was a primary founding goal of Gamers4Croydon".
"With less than 6 months to prepare, no political experience, and only a few thousand dollars funding, we have achieved that goal.
"Unfortunately there are never any guarantees in politics, but we have removed the largest impediment to classification reform."
Changes to the classification system in Australia can only be introduced to parliament if they have the unanimous agreement of all censorship ministers.
Michael Atkinson frequently claimed that he was not the only Australian classification minister to oppose an R18+ rating, but he was the only one to publicly state his opposition.
The next meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General is held in Melbourne on April 29. It is not yet known whether the introduction of an R18+ games rating will be discussed.
At least 40,000 submissions were recently received by the Attorney-General's department from Australians who want an adults-only rating introduced during a public consultation process.
FUCK YES
Today is a good day if this is true.
Finally.
sweet zombie jesus yes
Aww.
No more "lol australia bans everythingsz lol" jokes.
but seriously FUCKING YES.
Good, this is a step in the right direction, away from the nonsense Atkinson peddled.
goddammit now I can't make fun of Australia in the same way
Finally we can get back to the america is fat jokes
:woop:
What does this mean we can get L4D2 UNCENSORED?
Probably not.
It's pretty likely they'll uncensor it if this guy does end up getting us an r18 rating. Valve even said so themselves that they can just release a patch.
If this all goes well, I'm gonna have to re-rethink my plans of moving to Australia.
Love the way G4C make it seem as if they were actually effective.

The internet filter is still on its way.
what do you mean?
My plans for the future have revolved around moving to Brisbane and the whole "censorship of entertainment"-thing kind of put me off.
The internet filter is still on its way.
Bugger.
The internet filter is still on its way.
It's pretty unlikely that'l actually get through.
I don't think this will affect how games are going to be censored, it probably just gives parents something to look at and see if it's good for their kids or not.
Australia bans Michael Atkinson.

Actually, G4C's blog was not related to getting a new AG because of them.

Not long after Gamers4Croydon's founding, Michael Atkinson dismissively stated that we wouldn't get even 1% of the vote. Come election day, Kat Nicholson garnered 3.7% of the vote, contributing to Atkinson losing almost 14% of his primary vote. Less than a day after polls closed Mr Atkinson announced he would not seek to retain his position as Attorney-General.
Seeing the role of Attorney-General filled by someone other than Mr Atkinson was a primary founding goal of Gamers4Croydon. With less than 6 months to prepare, no political experience, and only a few thousand dollars funding, we have achieved that goal. With so very little to work with, we have contributed to two other incumbents losing their seats, and all of our lower house candidates polled higher than the 1% we apparently wouldn't get. In the upper house, we outpolled the majority of groups, including a significant number with more resources, more experience, and much more time.
What this now means for the introduction of the R classification remains to be seen. Unfortunately there are never any guarantees in politics, but we have removed the largest impediment to classification reform. We have raised a significant amount of awareness in the community about the problems with the classification system. We have sent a major warning to every Attorney General in the country that blocking positive reform is not only bad for the community but will hurt them politically. We have led by example, helped improve the level of discourse in the online community, and placed gamers in a better position than ever before to be heard and taken seriously.
The fight for an R18+ classification, genuine representation, and proactive and accountable government is far from over. Gamers4Croydon's campaign is far from over. Together with the gaming community and fellow progressives, we have heralded a new generation of politically savvy voters, and sent a strong warning to all who would use the power entrusted to them by the people, for themselves:
We game, we vote.
My name is Chris Prior, and I'm a Gamer4Croydon.
The Age seems to have implied that G4C think they were the sole cause of this new guy.
Story changes when you say things in context, doesn't it, The Age

:aaaaa:
UNCENSORED L4D2???
Won't affect those of us who had someone from another country gift us L4D2, but still good to see there's a system in place for when R18+ is introduced

Hopefully it'll mean they'll unblock non-australian copies from finding Australian hosted servers, I can never find more then one or two servers through the regular match-making system :frown:
That's great.
