• CNN's #1 reason why Americans should care about events in Egypt - Can't see the pyramids and sights
Washington (CNN) -- As political turmoil engulfs Egypt, Americans are watching closely -- and they should be: What happens in Egypt will directly affect Americans in many ways. 1. Travel: See the pyramids along the Nile -- NOT Egypt, with its 5,000-year history, the pyramids and pharaohs, was always a luxury travel destination for Americans but the political and social violence that has wracked the country for 2½ years has virtually destroyed Egypt's U.S. tourist business. Yeah, because forget human life. That doesn't deserve top spot.
A lot of people I know irl don't even know what the hell is going on in the world, they didn't even know about the revolution Egypt had back in 2011 nor what happened in Libya afterwards. If only people paid attention to the news more often. And a lot of them don't seem to care when I tell them what's going on in the world, even if it is something extremely important to us.
Mass media is a helluva thing.
20 years ago, my dad was offered to go to Egypt with the rich parents of his good friend, he turned it down, because he didn't want to make their friendship a monetary one. Now he kinda wishes he went.
I read that title as "can't see pyramids and shit" which would have probably been equally appropriate :v:
they're making a fairly legitimate point right now but it's being presented in a fucking stupid way
this is CNN the most short-sighted network when it comes to issues that have no immediate answer [editline]7th July 2013[/editline] fox is worse but CNN can be just as short sighted as them
And this is one of the main reasons I don't follow the news. Of all the reasons to try to stir up interest over there tourism is what CNN chooses. Fuck the media.
If only people paid attention to the news more often.
If people pay attention to the news more often they'll be even worse off than they are now. The media is too terribly slanted for a word they say to be taken as even a partial truth without spending quite a lot of time digging around and factchecking...which is something few have time to do and even fewer have the willpower to do...and if you need proof it's right in the OP. The news is bullshit and few people have the time and willpower to sift through the shit and find the truth amongst the lies. So only few people bother paying attention to anything that happens outside of their local region.
And a lot of them don't seem to care when I tell them what's going on in the world
Can you really blame people for not caring about people literally half a world away, people they have not met and will never meet, people they will never even hear of much less talk to, people they could never help even if they desperately wanted to, when they're struggling just to keep their own home theirs? Maybe in better times this would be an argument, but right now I just don't buy it. Too many people have more pressing matters to concern themselves with than things they have no power to affect half a world away.
even if it is something extremely important to us.
I'm thinking...what is it that Egypt makes and sells in the 'States that's so important we should pay attention to them? I'm coming up with a blank here.
first world problems much?

I have many concerns in my own life as well, but I still try to keep up to date with the news, a lot of people I know just seem to be very ignorant of many things in general though. Sure it takes time to look through different news sources and figuring out what to believe, but at least you're educating yourself in some way or another rather than just staying ignorant to what's going on around us. In a way CNN bringing up the whole tourism thing could be a way to get people to actually care more about these places, as funny as it may be, it's kind of sad they have to go to these lengths to get people to actually pay attention to this kind of stuff.
Clinton News Network has done it again.

Being concerned about people you'll never meet on a continent you'll never set foot on in a country you'll never visit is a far faaaar lower priority than being concerned about having to live in a cardboard box behind the local Denny's because the bank foreclosed on you. So people don't pay attention to the people they'll never meet in the country they'll never visit, they instead pay attention to their work hours and the mortgage company so they can stay in their house. I'm assuming you never had that spectre looming over your head since you don't seem to grasp why people in this economic situation are more interested in their own lives than they are in lives they're powerless to change.
I have a job and I lived on my own for a bit, I was struggling to find work for about 6 months and I still paid attention to the news even then. Even in the roughest times I tried to manage everything the best I can, I suppose people are different in which they handle these things. [editline]7th July 2013[/editline] And I still feel like I have the willpower to change what I want in my life, which is why other people shouldn't make excuses and feel like they can't change anything in their life. It doesn't even take a long time to just research stuff on the times you are actually free, hell, I just use Facepunch and some other sites to filter out all the shitty news for me to make the whole process quicker. And who says I won't ever visit these countries at some point in my life? I plan on travelling the world at some point, and I'd like to know the situation about what's going on and other stuff to make sure I know what to expect from a certain area.
Think of all the airport sphinx and pyramid souvenirs and playing cards that weren't sold because of this. Such a catastrophe.
I can easily imagine some disgruntled individual or group with terrorist inclinations catching the wind of this kind of talk and specifically bombing the shit out the pyramids and other things, not even targeting the people, but the sights on their own. It would be a pretty big "yeah? guess what? fuck your sightseeing" to the West which they don't like a lot, anyway.

It never worked. Not to mention that they're heavily protected with security perimeters, metal detectors, and forces stationed nearby like most historical sites in Egypt anyway.
My sister's planned trip to Egypt was canceled in 2011 when shit was busy popping off over there. It's far from the most important issue in the grand scheme of things, sure, but when you look at it truthfully it's one of the few matters surrounding the issue that's actually going to resonate with and effect a noticeable amount of people in the general public stateside. People in New York can sit around and be outraged by the military shooting at protesters, but at the end of the day it doesn't effect them in a way they can discern, and the only real reaction they're going to have is "oh, well, how awful". It's not going to keep them up at night. People who have invested time and money into planning a trip or something, though, are directly effected, and that probably constitutes a larger amount of people (given Egypt's tourist industry) than those with close relatives in Egypt or other people with more dire concerns living in the United States. So while not the greatest issue, it's probably the most relatable with the general public, whether it effects them in the long run the most or not.
Or maybe we're just tired of hearing about these issues that have been going on for the passed how many years now?
I am trying to see why everyone is up in arms about this article. There where several other legitimate and serious reasons listed. Also its not like the article said "from most important to least important". It just happen to be first on the list.

And though it's not officially listed most important to least, journalists put the most interesting/important information at the beginning of the article because most news readers don't read the whole article, so they cram whatever they feel is "really news worthy" in the first part. So yeah, it was listed as most important to least.

It's a very simplistic article no doubt, but It wasn't suggesting that travel was the most important aspect of the conflict.

And "gas prices rising" is "yesterday's news" so to speak.

truth be told they are right.... the average American doesn't give a fuck
this isn't a ranking, its just a list of 5 reasons, all of them valid. you people sometimes get so worked up over such pedantic shit.
truth be told they are right.... the average American doesn't give a fuck
The average American gives about as much a fuck as anyone else in the world, excluding the immediate area of course.
you've gotten significantly more fringe-loonie over the years you know that right There's a point to be made about rampant materialism but it isn't the reason CNN wrote a stupid article
actually it's the only reason cnn writes any articles. they are about sensationalism and perpetuating a materialistic culture because they can get eyes on screen with it. they don't really care about journalism, just making money. this article and the piers morgan show have been pretty good examples of that. [editline]7th July 2013[/editline] and yea, cnn isn't the only one who perpetuates this, and i doubt they are consciously doing it either. it's all subconsciously perpetuated because it is what is profitable.
