Does the news media cause more harm then good when news goes national?

Recently there has been a random murder and I seen that some of my friends that go to OSU have decided to try and push for it to be national news.
Now to me making it national news isn't always a good thing.
The news bombard the families affected with questions, making their life even more miserable so they can't mourn their loss in private.
However, it helps raise publicity on the murder and let more people donate their money, hearts and prayers to the families of the victim.
Also, there could be potential imitators. As the kids just wanted to be "famous" that is partially why they killed the man as he jogged by the house they were in.
Now the news also pushes for stuff like gun control, yes the man died by a gun, but an idea can lead a man to do whatever he can to achieve it.
I was just wondering whats your thoughts on if news making something national is good or bad.
It can be a good thing or a bad thing, most of it depends on the event.
If it's that one guy from a few years ago who was 9 feet tall and couldn't afford a pair of size 26 or 27 shoes, that was good because they raised enough money for him to buy two pairs of shoes (which costed a ridiculous amount of money).
On the other hand, sensationalizing horrific shooting events like Newtown and the Dark Knight shooting can give people an incentive to become famous easily, even if it's a horrible event that nobody wished happened, some people will do anything for fame.
That's one reason among many that I believe mass shootings have been on the rise in the U.S. in recent years.
I think national news should be restricted to things that affect the nation as a whole.
The Trayvon shooting really shouldn't have received so much attention, only in Florida at most.
Local and regional news should be kept to local and regional news agencies.
But what I've heard, a lot of national news agencies showcase crap things like a trial in one little area simply because it's cheaper on them to use the public footage of the trial over and over rather than sending their own crew to somewhere to make new film to cut, edit, and make a segment on.
