[release]Shameless CopyPasta from Wikipedia:
"Trance is a genre of electronic dance music that developed in the 1990s. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 120 and 140 BPM, short melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track. It is a combination of many forms of music such as industrial, techno, and house. The origin of the term is uncertain, with some suggesting that the term is derived from the Klaus Schulze album Trancefer (1981) or the early trance act Dance 2 Trance. In any case, the name is undoubtedly linked to the ability of music to induce an altered state of consciousness known as a trance. The effect of some trance music has been likened to the trance-inducing music created by ancient shamanists during long periods of drumming."
Trance is a generalization of several sub-genres. Some of the popular genres vocal trance, psy/goa trance, uplifting trance, classic trance, progressive trance and tech trance. Trance music is usually around 128-140 BPM. Some genres more, some genres less. In this thread, I'll cover the origin of each of these major subgenres, talk about what differentiates it from other subgenres and provide songs of that genre. I'll also talk about weekly radio shows and trance events that take place around the world. So without further ado, let's begin.[/release]
[release]:siren:Different Genres of Trance:siren:
Trance
I'll keep this category reserved for more of the mainstream and new trance that's been released in the last couple of years. Trance usually varies from 128-140 BPM. My definition of trance is usually music with an emotional and psycological impact. You can go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong, but when people ask me to show them trance, I usually stick to a select few tunes. This genre sticks to the same music plot. Intro, break down, build up, climax, another small breakdown, outro.
Gaia - Aisha (Original Mix)

Bobina - Invisible Touch (Ferry Corsten Remix)

Vocal Trance
Vocal trance is generally a trance track produced around vocals and/or the other way around. Being a story or simply the same words over and over again, the words and tone of the song work in sync with the melody to provide a hypnotic, uplifting or fun feel for the listener. Vocals are usually sung by a female artist, but there are also a few male artists (Such as BT). The subgenre dates back to the early 90s when trance was still developing. You'll usually find vocal trance at around 130-140 BPM.
Josh Gabriel presents Winter Kills - Deep Down

Sophie Sugar vs Sunlounger - Lost Together (Armin van Buuren Mash Up)

Uplifting Trance
Uplifting trance is pretty much what it implies. Uplifting. Someone could have killed your mother and it won't matter because you're so happy because of the music that's playing. Okay well, maybe not that much. But it's the kind of music you feel inspired when you listen to and it just makes you want to go out and have some sort of life changing experience. Uplifting trance developed in Germany as a spinoff of Progressive Trance in 1997. It could also include vocals. Uplifting Trance ranges from 136-142 BPM.
Neptune Project - Aztec (Original Mix)

Gaia - Tuvan (Andy Blueman Remix)

Psy/Goa Trance
Don't bother sitting down because you'll when you hear the speed and randomness that comes out of this subgenre of trance. Usually above 145 BPM, psy/goa trance is very fast paced and and in a way, spaztic. In my opinion, one of the hardest subgenres of trance to produce. There's so much shit going on your head just wants to explode just listening to it. In my opinion, this subgenre is amazing when it comes to studying or building something or other.
Astral Projection - Mahadeva

Shakta - Lepton Head Part III

Classic Trance
Classic trance is well, trance music from back in the day. It had a higher BPM than today's trance music. Classic trance back then it basically what psy/goa trance is today when it comes to BPM. Of course with its highs and lows, it varies from 120-140 BPM. Usually with a funky sounding bassline, Classic trance really focuses on the trance state with ambient and hypnotizing sounds and melodies.
PPK - Resurrection

Humate - Love Stimulation (Paul van Dyk's Love Club Mix)

Progressive Trance
Are we there yet? Progressive trance is the kind of trance that just goes and goes, adding little over time, changing for a short period of time, then just going back to what it was before. Don't get me wrong, as boring as it may seem, progressive trance can be amazing. It usually has the same BPM as Trance. 128-130, just with a different song structure.
D-Mad - I Promised (Original Mix)

Dynamic Illusion - Summermoon

Tech Trance
Techtrance is a trance/techno hybrid, as the name suggests. Trance structute with techno elements and synths. Personally, one of my favorite genres when produced correctly. Tech Trance is aswell the same BPM range as Trance. 128-140.
W&W - Mainstage

Heatbeat - Vergatron (Original Mix)

Hard Trance
Your mom thinks the same way about this genre as she does with weed. "Weed is a stepping stone to stronger drugs!" Well, Hard Trance is the stepping stone up to Hardstyle. With a harsh, rough sound and powerful kick, this genre varies from 140-160 BPM. Originating in the early 90s in Germany, Hard Trance is one of the first Trance and one of the most popular trance genres to date. Also, a big thanks to shaunyboyy for reminding me to add Hard Trance.

Trance Energy

Starting in 1999, Trance Energy is one of the most popular, if not the most popular trance event in the world. It's held once a year in the Netherlands and has three different rooms. The first room being the Mainstage. The Mainstage can hold up to 20000 people on the floor and usually has the most popular trance DJs/Producers in the world. The Madhouse can hold up to 5000 people and is usually hosted by DJ Jean, a popular DJ in the Netherlands. The Madhosue usually plays house/club sounds and has several DJs hit the decks asside from DJ Jean. The third room changes it's name every year. It also holds 5000 people and is very similar to the Mainstage when it comes to the music played. It is generally a more edgy trance compared to the Mainstage. There is also a new Trance Energy theme every year. The theme for TE2010 was produced by Sander Van Doorn, entitled "Renegade".

Trance!
I haven't been listening to it that much lately. I used to listen to ASOT pretty much every day. Now I just listen to it once a month or something. I really hate vocal trance. Maybe it's because most of the time they have someone who's not good at singing.
It's also hard to find someone who likes Trance. Almost everyone I know either hates it or only likes the cheesy stuff they call "techno" (sigh).
I like making Trance too with Reason 5 and Record. (anyone else doing this?)
[editline]17th October 2010[/editline]
Some of the artists I can remember liking is Daniel Kandi and Myon and Shane 54 (usually only their dubs but they don't have bad singers singing though)
there are probably more but none that I can remember. I really only listened to asot, and from that I fetched a few tracks
any kind of trance that can fuck you up like daze you? that would be cool I like this stuff now its cool I've never herd of it until just now but it is awesome...

I have a shitload of trance songs. My Trance collection is over 14 gigs. I'll make a nice list and dump it in the OP when I'm done.

You got the ear for it, that's for sure.
It was interesting but the mixing is something you need to work on. Everything is kind of washed away.
So what I'm saying is that it has potential to be a good trance song melody-wise, but not mixing-wise.

Though Armin Van Buuren was in the OP, I'd still like to post a couple of his tracks that are my favorite. Armin, unlike most producers, uses hardware synths when recording his music to keep his trademark warm and cinematic sound. To me, Armin's songs also have some of the most energy out of all trance music. He also makes some of the best vocal trance hits around. Plus, his brother Eller Buuren happens to be a professional guitarist, and is quite good I must add.

I tried not to focus on Armin too much. His newer stuff disappointed me, as it has too much of a pop sound to it more than anything. I focused on the good old Armin and his alias, Gaia. Mirage was his worst album. It had some okay songs. Here, I'll make a little list.
Good songs: Orbion, Down to Love, Full Focus, Virtual Friend, This Light Between Us, Mirage
Okay songs: Not Giving Up On Love, I Don't Own you, Take a Moment, Coming Home, These Silent Hearts
Bad songs: Feels So Good, Minack, Youtopia, Drowning
Drowning sounds more like electro. Youtopia has terrible vocals and is overall just a bad song. Feels So Good is something I'd hear on the radio right after Beyonce or some shit. Minack is just.... I don't even know how to explain it. I don't see the Ferry or Armin in that song. It disappointed me so much.
