Greek police say more than 1,600 illegal immigrants will be deported following a major crackdown in Athens in recent days.
More than 6,000 people have been detained, though most were released.
Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias defended the crackdown. He said Greece's economic plight meant it could not afford an "invasion of immigrants".
He called the immigration issue a "bomb at the foundations of the society and of the state"."Unless we create the proper structure to handle immigration, then we will fall apart," he said.
Some 88 illegal immigrants were sent back to Pakistan on Sunday.
The Greek authorities have increased the number of guards at the border with Turkey amid fears there may be a sudden influx of refugees entering Greek territory as the situation in Syria deteriorates.
More than 80% of migrants entering the European Union do so through Greece, which is in the grip of its worst recession in decades.
Some Greek politicians have called for the government to adopt a harder line on illegal immigration.
In the recent election, the far-right Golden Dawn party won enough votes to enter parliament.
Last week the party distributed free food to needy people outside the Greek parliament - but only if they proved they were Greek citizens and submitted important personal information including their blood type, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported.
Greece has frequently come under criticism for its handling of immigrants. Amnesty International accused it of treating asylum seekers like criminals and holding them in detention centres.
Greece has frequently called on other European nations to do more to help tackle illegal migration into the EU, arguing that it bears a disproportionate burden.

Breaking news: Greece economy booming; Greece becomes world's leading producer of human blood. Source of blood still unknown.
well its rather true, with the population more or less jobless it would be even more difficult to house, feed and give a job to those who are not supposed to be in the country.
What's wrong with departing ILLEGAL immigrants?

On the other hand. Immigrant work for shit. While Greeks don't
Being a country near the middle east tends to have that effect. Mass Immigration I mean.
fuckin hate the immigrants takin our jobs fuckin hell cant even speak english half of them why dont they fuck off back to their own country
On the other hand. Immigrant work for shit. While Greeks don't
So you have Greeks out of work while the immigrants take the jobs?
So you have Greeks out of work while the immigrants take the jobs?
if your job got taken by an illegal immigrant with a poor grasp of the native language you didn't deserve that job
if your job got taken by an illegal immigrant with a poor grasp of the native language you didn't deserve that job
You can lose your job because an illegal immigrant who can barely speak the language works for a buck less per hour.

A buck less? How about 5.
Considering how shitty Greece is right now, and how hostile they are towards immigrants, why are people even going there illegally?
if your job got taken by an illegal immigrant with a poor grasp of the native language you didn't deserve that job
Or the countries business owners are taking advantage of cheap labour

Greece is fairly close to "less fortunate" places so that's where people usually head.

tough shit
Please Portugal, do the same with that filthy gypsy scum. They are nothing short of horrible parasites that make ACTUAL parasites a blessing.

welcome to capitalism may i take your coat
(it'll cost ya though)
people only like free markets when they work in their favour.

Immigrants (sometimes legal, others not) have historically tended to do the more low-paying jobs for the last few decades in Greece. They are often preferred because they are easier to fool (or forced, due to their financial situation) to work without an insurance, or paid proper, legal wages.
There certainly is a social stigma of sorts for jobs such as basic construction, and that is a key factor for that kind of work mostly being done by immigrants (not necessarily illegal) instead of Greeks, though there have been occasions where Greeks were denied the job, presumably because they knew their legal rights better than the immigrants, and as such were not preferred by construction contractors.

Just because the Golden Dawn assholes made it to some articles on international news agencies, it doesn't mean that racism and discrimination has prevailed all of the sudden. It's quite a sweeping generalization that you are making.
Anyway. It goes without saying that Greece provides for a much higher quality of life than most of the countries that it is relatively close with. To add to that, Greece and Italy act as the gateways to Europe for many immigrants.

We French people tried, sadly there's still shitload of them. Even Romania doesn't want them back.
This shouldn't have been news anyhow. There ought to have already been decent infrastracture for detained immigrants and a better plan to return them to their countries long before the crisis hit.
For fuck's sakes, the article even mentions that political immigrants had gotten the same treatment as illegal immigrants because of the lack of infrastracture.

yeah man someone should put up camps for them somewhere
oh wait lol
Greece is an important immigration shield for Europe. It has been in that position for a very long time.
Can't really blame them for not having a proper immigration system when nothing they have is proper.
It makes you wonder where some of the these immigrants are coming from if they're trying to sneak into Greece illegally.
I wish all the illegals were deported out of my town. It's hard as shit to get a job around here now.

Sorry, that's bullshit.
The quality of life pre-crisis has been up to par with many/most European countries, the crime rate had been one of the lowest in Europe, and at least Greece has had a healthcare system that doesn't tend to let people die on the streets because they can't pay their bills.
The lack of care for proper illegal immigrant detainment and repatriation, shows a specific lack of effort on the particular issue by politicians, presumably because it hasn't been a big enough issue to guarantee vote fishing.
It's evidence of political corruption rather than anything else.

Actually, my point is that the immigrant and domestic population don't compete for the same jobs.
immigrants have been a great scapegoat for all the world's problems in the last 10 or so years. unless people in first world countries stop being so apathetic they'll be a scapegoat for many more years to come
I support this action, though it won't help as much as Golden Dawn thinks it'll help.

I wouldn't call camps for them, but fuck. They are just horrible excuses for human beings.

Didn't you guys get an overflow of them into your country a few years ago or something?
Really, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
