A mysterious light that streaked across San Diego’s night sky Saturday, visible as far away as Nevada and Arizona, was a Trident missile test-fired by the Navy.
Navy Strategic Systems Programs conducted the scheduled Trident II (D5) missile test flight at sea from the Kentucky, an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, in the Pacific Test Range off the coast of Southern California, a Navy spokesman said.
The test was part of a scheduled, on-going system evaluation test, said Cmdr. Ryan Perry with the Navy’s Third Fleet.
Anyone see it?

What makes some launches of the same type look that spectacular and others barely visible?
Here's a picture I took

I missed my chance to see it...
I didn't see it but it got flooded in my Facebook feed, and I saw some snapchats about it. You can't fool me government, I've seen the X-files
I was at work when I happened but my brothers were freaking out.

Kojima/Bethesda confirmed?
Can we get a physicist here to explain how can a missile look like that in the middle of the night?

People are saying it was high enough that the sunlight was hitting it.

this same effect will happen to rocket launches in dawn or dusk, where something can be lit up while the sky is dark.

sunlight hitting the exhaust, and or the actual exhaust, just because its dark to us, doesn't mean the rocket isn't getting a little bit of light hitting it just right. the same thing happened over norway a while ago, except it was a big spiral because the booster flipped around

Yeah right, if it was a missile, they wouldn't say it's a missile.
Aurora confirmed, you heard it here first, folks
Why would they do that knowing it would scare the public? Shouldn't tests like this be announced as to avoid panic and confusion?
Bullshit what's with the bright white light? I didn't know they attached a flash light to a missile lol

Rocket science is amazing. Thanks!
it was a ray gun from the alien megastructure, thank god it merely missed our earth.
Its a Trident II missile launched from an Ohio class submarine off the coast of Orange County, CA. http://ktla.com/2015/11/07/witnesses-across-socal-report-seeing-unexplained-light-in-night-sky/
It was lit up because it was launched just after sunset (6:00pm is when I took this picture) so for objects higher up in the sky, the sun is still out. If you know when to look, you can see this on cities with tall skyscrapers too.

probably poor timing, rocket trails generally invisible at all other times besides sunset and sunrise.
interesting. does anyone know if trident missiles leave contrails or vapor trails? last monday up here in washington state i saw a weird white light in the sky in the middle of the day shortly following a flyby of a couple military jets. no trail following the light so if missiles do leave trails i'm just baffled as to what it could have been, but missile tests wouldn't be too unusual due to the nearby military base (except it would have had to have come out of property owned by a logging company so :pudge:)

I hate you.
I was just chilling in a hot tub with my friends in Sacramento and we saw it by chance. It was a pretty cool experience. For a second we all thought WWIII had started or something.

They usually are announced, mostly so the Russian don't panic.
Saw it from here in Murrieta about 45 minutes north of SD.

Submarines and their activities are generally very secretive, so no.
I remember something similar happening in Norway a few years ago.

Gee, I wonder if there was a submarine nearby when this Trident missile was clearly seen in the sky.
Take a good look, that's is pretty much what the end of the world looks like. A SLBM would likely be the first choice in a first strike against us as it would be launched close to shore giving little reaction time for retaliation.
